Is Paris Burning? Composed by Maurice Jarre, The 50th Anniversary Recording of the Complete Score. A Special Collectors 2 CD Edition featuring a brand new recording by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra Conducted by Nic Raine. Released by Tadlow Music, Price: £16.95 TADLOW023, Date: August 25th 2016 Anniversary of the Liberation of Paris.
It’s always exciting to receive the latest release from Tadlow music. When award winning producer James Fitzpatrick and respected conductor Nic Raine join forces and combine their talents, you know the result is always going to be good. Maurice Jarre’s music is, of course, nothing new to the long standing partnership. Together in recent years, they have overseen triumphant new recordings of Jarre’s Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and Villa Rides (1968).
Is Paris Burning? (1966) is their latest collaboration and features the complete 69 minute film score including previously unrecorded cues. A great deal of Jarre’s patriotic score is heavily militaristic,...

Conducted by: James Fitzpatrick, Nic Raine, Evan Jolly
Release Date: 2012
Format: Audio CD
Number of Discs: 2 (approx. 1 hour, 56 minutes)

In the top 20 list of the biggest ever grossing films worldwide, six are Harry Potter titles. The music for the film series has featured the work of the cream of film composers including John Williams (who received Academy Award nominations for two films in the series), Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper and Alexandre Desplat. This unique collection of new recordings by The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra brings together the music from all eight films for the very first time.
Let me emphasize what is set forth above, that this is not a collection of tracks from previously released soundtracks, but rather is a new recording, both a digest and expansion of each of the themes.

Music is an intricate part of movie making, and it is absolutely necessary to make sure that the composer should have a firm grasp on whatever genre the film is. This is especially true when you’re bringing a book or series of books that is loved by millions to life on the big screen. The trouble is finding the right composer when dealing with the magical world of Harry Potter. The seven books of the series were transformed into eight beautiful films – if not always adhering to the source material one hundred percent – and creating the musical soundscape was just as important as the sets, costumes, actors, or special effects. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra have taken some of the finer selections from these eight films and presented them brilliantly in a new collection that is a treat for any Harry Potter fanatic.

This week’s soundtracks review only features one new soundtrack with three re-releases and new versions of one film series’ scores.
Eastbound & Down by Various Artists
Eastbound & Down is an American comedy series about a former Major League Baseball superstar who fizzled out and is now adjusting to normal life while trying to get back to the Majors. The show predominantly takes place in the American south (and Mexico) and the music of the show reflects that. A majority of the musical tracks on this two-disc soundtrack could be classified as blues/southern rock or rap. This can be evidenced by the theme song, 1971’s “Going Down” by blues musician Freddie King. Almost half of the tracks are clips from the show, showcasing the humor of Eastbound. A great soundtrack for fans of the show or blues rock fans who enjoy some crude humor mixed in between the songs.

Scoring a silent film is a daunting responsibility. But Nitin Sawhney jumped at a chance to breathe musical life into the dark cinematic world of Yogoto No Yume
Ihave been a film and television composer for many years, but have only scored one silent movie: German director Franz Osten's 1929 epic Prapancha Pash (A Throw of Dice), which was a great experience. So I was delighted when the British Film Institute asked me to work again with the London Symphony Orchestra on a new silent film project.
The film in question is a Japanese one. Yogoto No Yume (Every Night Dreams) is a 1933 silent movie directed by Mikio Naruse, a prolific but unappreciated director. The story focuses on the life and struggle of Japanese barmaid, Omitsu. Set against a backdrop of the Great Depression (which also affected Japan, though to a far lesser extent than America and Europe), the plot...

Released this week (Feb 8th) in time for this weekend’s Valentine Day activities, Silva Screen’s My Twisted Valentine (SILED4495) is a superb anti-Valentine compilation of film music for the more cynical amongst us.From neurotic Marnie, blood sucking Dracula and all-out war of the sexes in Kill Bill to ‘train wreck’ mentality of Betty Blue and the ‘bunny boiling’ Fatal Attraction, this CD has a great mix of movie themes. What I found most gratifying about this release is that it contains certain themes that I really like - but not quite enough to make me want to purchase the original soundtrack CD just for the one title track. Performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and London Music Works, films featured include: Psycho, La Dolce Vita, Marnie, Eyes Wide Shut, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Bonnie and Clyde, Thelma and Louise,...
