- Curator and senior archivist of the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections. The Rinzler archives includes the 12 record labels now collectively known as Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, with the original Folkways acquisition featuring the key works of folk artists such as Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Leadbelly.
- He attended Kenyon College, where he spent much of his time as a DJ at the campus radio station. He graduated with a degree in psychology. Later, he went to graduate school at the University of Maryland, studying library science with a specialty in media archives.
- His father, a geography professor, and his mother, a librarian who played guitar, took him to see Joan Baez, the The Clancy Brothers, and 'Peter, Paul and Mary'.
- His own personal collection has about 20,000 records.
