Podcasting revenue at iHeartMedia jumped 13 percent in the three months ending June 30, 2023, reaching $97 million, while the rest of the company’s revenues continued to be impacted by softness in the advertising market.
iHeartMedia reported total revenue of $920 million in the second quarter, down 3.6 percent from a year ago but better than the company’s guidance range of “down mid-single digits.” Multiplatform revenue was down 5.9 percent, or $37.4 million, due to decreases in broadcast advertising “due to a challenging macroeconomic environment” as well as a decline in political advertising.
On the earnings call, CEO Bob Pittman noted that the decline in multiplatform revenue is still less than it was during the 2020 economic downturn, when Q2 multiplatform group revenues were down 53.4 percent year-over-year.
“While there was some softness in our larger advertisers in Q2, our smaller advertisers remained resilient, and we saw a gradual improvement from our larger advertisers as well, which leads...

iHeartMedia Chairman and CEO Bob Pittman believes the advertising pullback seen across the media and entertainment industry won’t get any worse than it is now.
“I don’t sense that there’s something looming, I think we’re in it,” Pittman said Tuesday.
Pittman was speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference, and notably took that position after iHeartMedia, which owns more than 850 radio station as well as a podcasting business, beat second-quarter earnings expectations and saw its revenues grow 11 percent year over year. The year has not been as “robust” as expected, Pittman said, though iHeartMedia is still on track for its best Ebitda year on record.
In May, Pittman said the company saw a downturn in advertising in April, but expected May and June to climb higher.

The success of MTV in the 1980s also helped propel the careers of many executives still working in music today, several of whom are featured in the A&e documentary “I Want My MTV” (read Variety‘s review), which premieres tonight (Sept. 8). Among those first employees: John Sykes, now the chairman of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and president of iHeartMedia Entertainment.
“The people assembled were the best thing about MTV,” Sykes says, giving full credit to Bob Pittman, the corporate visionary who was essential in bringing MTV to life and now runs iHeartMedia as its CEO and chairman. “None of us had any experience in television — we came from the music business, from Conde Nast, from marketing firms — so that’s why MTV looked like nothing else on television. But that was the plan from day one, to create something that was completely different than the status quo.

While it remains in the Chapter 11 bankruptcy process, audio giant iHeartMedia has announced the members of its newly formulated board of directors, a group that includes former MGM boss Gary Barber and ex-Disney exec Jay Rasulo.
Noting that the board selections are subject to the approval of the company’s reorganization plan by the bankruptcy court, the company said the current board will continue to serve until iHeart emerges from Chapter 11.
New directors include Barber, who was abruptly ousted as head of MGM earlier this year but also had a notable run as a partner in production outfit Spyglass Entertainment; and Rasulo, who was CFO at Disney until exiting in 2015. They will join returning iHeart board members and execs Bob Pittman and Rich Bressler as well as three new additions with strong business backgrounds but much lower Hollywood quotients: Brad Gerstner, Sean Mahoney and Kamakshi Sivaramakrishnan.
