Nick Berardini couldn’t center on a more prescient subject for his debut documentary, Killing Them Safely. The subject of police brutality has become a boiling pot over the last few years with the innumerable incidents of police brutality, but along with polarizing conversations about the necessity of body cameras and structural changes to the way police interact with the public, there’s an attendant conversation about what tools police officers should be using, or even need. Berardini’s documentary addresses that conversation directly by focusing on the ethical blurriness of the use of tasers.
Berardini’s film finds a gateway into the issue through the death of Stanley Harlan, a 23-year-old Missouri young man who was hit with a taser for 31 consecutive seconds in front of his home after getting out of his car to protest being stopped for speeding by a police officer. Berardini said the movie began...

“When I see murders, I do not stand by, I have to call a murder a murder and I have to call the murderers the murderers,” Quentin Tarantino said at a protest against police brutality in New York City a week ago, and it lit a fuse. Police unions in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Philadelphia and Los Angeles along with The National Association of Police Organizations and the National Border Patrol Council have called for a boycott of the director's films, including his upcoming "The Hateful Eight." “The police officers that Quentin Tarantino calls ‘murderers’ aren’t living in one of his depraved big screen fantasies – they’re risking and sometimes sacrificing their lives to protect communities from real crime and mayhem,” New York City Police Benevolent Association president Patrick J. Lynch said in a statement. “New Yorkers need to send a message to this purveyor of degeneracy that...

Quentin Tarantino said “all cops are not murderers” in an interview intended to quell a nationwide police boycott of his films over his recent statements on police brutality. “All cops are not murderers,” Tarantino told the Los Angeles Times on Tuesday in his first public response to the controversy that flared up over his participation in a New York City rally on October 24. “I never said that. I never even implied that.” Also Read: Border Patrol Joins Quentin Tarantino Boycott The director, whose next film, “The Hateful Eight,” premieres on Christmas Day, continued: “What they’re doing is pretty obvious.

The New York Post devoted its cover to Quentin Tarantino on Tuesday, and demanded that the director apologize for calling police officers “murderers.” “Just say it, Quentin. Say you are…Sorry,” the cover reads. The director has faced mounting pressure from police unions since appearing at a rally against police brutality in New York on Oct. 24. “When I see murders, I do not stand by… I have to call a murder a murder and I have to call the murderers the murderers,” the director told a crowd of about 300. The Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs has joined the boycott of Quentin Tarantino‘s upcoming movie “The Hateful Eight.” The group, in conjunction with the Fraternal Order of Police, released a statement railing against Tarantino and calling for members to boycott his film. “For a man who has built his career on glorifying criminal violence, we take great offense to his recent comments calling law enforcement officers ‘murderers’ just days after an actual murder of a New York City Police Officer,” the Fop said in a statement. An organization representing over 16,500 border patrol agents are joining in the national police boycott of director Quentin Tarantino. Comments from Tarantino calling cops “murderers” last week have snowballed into the protest of his forthcoming awards hopeful “The Hateful Eight.” Protesters now includes the National Border Patrol Council. “We stand strongly in support of our brothers and sisters in uniform who have called for a boycott of Tarantino movies,” said Nbpc president Brandon Judd. “His hateful words, spoken just four days after a NYPD officer was gunned down in East Harlem, will only embolden those who would do harm to police officers.

Arriving in limited release this weekend before expanding wide in early October, Denis Villeneuve‘s Sicario is a strong start to the fall season. The drama surrounding the drug battle at the U.S.-Mexico border might not get any points for subtlety, but Villeneuve amplifies the tension of every scene with help from cinematographer Roger Deakins outdoing himself with every shot.
If it’s not coming to your city this weekend, or if you’re simply in the mood for some similarly themed films, we’ve rounded up eight titles that are well worth watching before seeing Sicario. Rather than including past work from Villeneuve (Prisoners and Enemy make for worthy primers) or proof that Emily Blunt makes an excellent heroine (see: Edge of Tomorrow and Looper), the selections aim to cover a thematic crossroads. Check them out below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

With the 2014-2015 television season winding down, many television fans and channels are looking ahead to the new series that will make their debut over the next television season. Fox is no different, having announced their renewals, cancellations, and new series pickups over the last week, and the network has now released trailers for a number of their new series.
First up is the trailer for the new animated series Bordertown.
From Family Guy’s Mark Hentemann comes Bordertown, a new animated comedy about two families living in a Southwest desert town on the U.S. – Mexico border. The series takes a satirical look at the cultural shifts occurring in America, where the U.S. Census forecasts that by 2017, ethnic minorities will become the majority. Set against this increasingly diverse backdrop, the comedy explores family, politics and everything in between with a cross-cultural wink. Bordertown centers on two clans: the Buckwalds and the Gonzalezes.

Days Go By: Clark Returns to Apathetic Adolescence for Latest
After having won the top prize at the 2012 Rome Film Festival, controversial filmmaker Larry Clark’s Marfa Girl was available for streaming directly from his official website. Now, nearly three years later, Breaking Glass Pictures is distributing the title in limited theatrical release. For those familiar with Clark’s work, the title doesn’t feel like anything new from the director, navigating a milieu of loosely connected adolescents and the peripheral adults in their environment as they conquer their all-consuming boredom with illicit drugs and promiscuity. The customarily blatant yet generally believable crude conversations revolving around sexuality present in all of Clark’s work is full force here.
Seeing as this is the filmmaker’s first feature in seven years, following 2005’s Wassup Rockers (though it should be noted a 2014 title The Smell of Us premiered in last fall’s...

Kids helmer Larry Clark circumvented traditional distribution when he put his latest film, Marfa Girl, online for fans to stream on his own website for $5.99 a pop. Thanks to Breaking Glass Pictures, he’ll see the sexually charged West Texas-set drama hit theaters in limited release next year. Marfa Girl revolves around Adam (Adam Mediano), a directionless 16-year-old living in Marfa, and his relationships with his girlfriend, his neighbor, his teacher, a newly arrived local artist, and a local Border Patrol officer. The film won top honors at the 2012 Rome Film Festival and will open in a 10- to 15-theater run in the spring. “I think Marfa Girl is my best film or at least as good as any film I’ve made,” said Clark in a statement. Breaking Glass CEO Rich Wolff negotiated the deal with Ryan McCombs of Spotlight Pictures.

Sleepy Hollow, Season 2, Episode 2, “The Kindred”
Written by Mark Goffman and Albert Kim
Directed by Paul Edwards

Abbie: “This is insane!”
Ichabod: “So much of my life can be classified under those auspices.”
- Sleepy Hollow, “The Kindred
It’s a rare show that can inspire fits of giggles simply by reading an episode description, and “The Kindred” certainly meets that bill: “Ichabod Crane concocts a daring plan to rescue his wife from the Headless Horseman by resurrecting a Frankenstein-like monster created by Benjamin Franklin.” It’s a sentence that reads like a pitch for a Pride and Prejudice and Zombies knockoff, rejected for being too absurd. And yet, not only does Sleepy Hollow embrace this idea for a story, they do so in a manner that makes the action plausible in the universe and turns it into fist-pumping excitement.

What. A. Witch.
In this week’s episode, Sleepy Hollow does something very smart by having Katrina choose to stay with Abraham rather than flee with Ichabod.
This is a welcome move for a couple of reasons. For starters, it’s fun to watch the series zig where we expect it to zag; Ich’s been trying to free his wife from enslavement for a season now, and when he finally gets to her, she says, “Thanks, I’m good”?! But on a deeper level, Katrina’s decision raises some important questions the Fox drama can have a great time answering in subsequent installments.

One of the most shocking moments of the new documentary Narco Cultura comes near the end, as one of the musicians who profits from the most heinous and violent acts committed by Mexican drug cartels deliberately misquotes a memorable line from Brian de Palma’s Scarface: “First you get the money, then you get the power, then you get the bitches.” The surprise is not that the 1983 gangster opus is name-dropped here, but that it only happens once. The hits just keep on coming in Narco Cultura, a thoroughly horrifying look at the neverending criminal battle going on south of the border.

Multi-hyphenate Seth MacFarlane is set to expand his ever-increasing comedy empire this fall as Fox has just announced that they have given a 13-episode order to the animated Bordertown. Co-created by MacFarlane and Family Guy’s Mark Hentemann, the show will be “taking on immigration and the undergoing cultural shift” which is presently enveloping 2013 America. Sounds interesting and we have no doubt that these hot-button issues will receive an unmerciful skewing at the hands of MacFarlane and his comedic-desperados.
Set to tak place in a fictional town on the U.S./Mexico border, the show centres on the following:
“The intertwining daily lives of neighbors Bud Buckwald and Ernesto Gonzales. Bud, a married father of three, is a Border Patrol agent who feels threatened by the cultural changes that have transformed his neighborhood. Living next door is Ernesto, an industrious Mexican immigrant and father of four, who is proud to be making it in America.

Realizing the burden of fostering an open dialogue on race should not be shouldered entirely by Dads, Fox has ordered another animated series from Seth MacFarlane, about “the undergoing cultural shift in America” that forms our country’s diverse melting pot of cartoon stereotypes. In this case, mostly Mexican ones: Bordertown, created by Family Guy writer Mark Hentemann, takes place in a fictitious desert town along the U.S.-Mexico divide, where an old-fashioned Border Patrol agent and family man named Bud Buckwald laments the changes in his neighborhood while clashing with his hard-working Mexican immigrant neighbor, Ernesto Gonzales. Fox's project of enabling Seth MacFarlane to offend everyone in America will now extend to the issue of immigration. The Family Guy creator has been given yet another show on the network — one about “the undergoing cultural shift in America.” Deadline reports that the network gave a thirteen-episode order to Bordertown, which will join Family Guy and the recently renewed The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers next season. The show will be “set in a fictitious desert town near the U.S.-Mexico border” and center on the intertwining daily lives of neighbors Bud Buckwald, a Border Patrol agent, and Ernesto Gonzales, an industrious Mexican immigrant. The show is created by MacFarlane and Family Guy's Mark Hentemann and both with executive produce. If MacFarlane's Dads is any indication — and we bet it is — then you should prepare yourself for some racism.

After last week’s Bourdain-centric episode, Archer widened its scope with “Coyote Lovely,” introducing enough one-off characters to fill up a station wagon. As is often the case when you busy things up to such an extent, there will be drawbacks.
What bothered me about the episode is much the same as what didn’t sit well with me about Toy Story 3; with so many characters vying for screen time, it left precious little time for the most memorable of them, and caused many more to feel like set dressing. Was the image of that unusual assortment of characters squeezed together inside a station wagon worth a chuckle? Yes, but I don’t know if it was worth the issues brought on by having so populated an episode.
Even with the rest of Isis again taking a backseat to Archer and co., there simply wasn’t enough time to go around.

This week, Archer headed to the sun-blasted shithole that is Texas to stop some a "Coyote Lovely," which is espanol for people smuggler Also, coyote.
But in the end, really after klumping around Turkmenistan just two weeks ago, Archer spent yet another adventure in the dessert nearly dying.
Replace some Turks with some Border Patrol Texans, Lana out for Ray and some dictator satire for some illegal immigration and you basically have an eerily similar episode. Just without all the hallucination of a snake bite.
Once Lana and Cyril were sent back with some Archer-inflicted injuries, we were treated to some all-too-brief scenes at Isis. Just some brief moments of Pam and Cheryl with only a hallucination of Krieger? Boo!
Luckily, Archer and Mercedes kept things pretty entertaining on the lamb. From drunken veterinarians to Archer's endearing racism and interaction with Lupe, our lead character managed to cover for the lack of usual supporting goons.

Last week saw the release of The Avengers here in the UK, the year’s biggest film to date, and the third-highest-grossing film of all time. Naturally, it was a pretty good week – somewhat marred, however, by the fact that the UK edition has a violent scene edited and Joss Whedon’s commentary track omitted.
Needless to say, I’ll be importing my copy from the Us sometime in the future, after its release there tomorrow. (It also means I’ll have the proper title – ‘The Avengers’ – on the cover, and not just ‘Avengers Assemble’, a name which I refuse to use, because ‘The Avengers’ is just way cooler.)
This week is just as big a week all round, with Whedon returning to the home entertainment market in the form of The Cabin in the Woods, along with the equally-praised Indonesian action film, The Raid, and many more excellent films.

It’s Monday, so we all know what that means! Yes, it’s time for another rundown of DVDs and Blu-ray’s hitting stores online and offline this week. It’s a jam-packed week, with plenty of movies waiting to take you money, so let us breakdown the new releases and highlight what you should – and shouldn’t – be buying from today, September 24th 2012.
Pick(S) Of The Week
The Raid (DVD/Blu-ray)
Deep in the heart of one of Jakarta’s most deprived slums stands an impenetrable high-rise apartment block. To most it is 30 floors of Hell to be avoided at all costs but for many of the city’s most dangerous killers and gangsters, including the area’s most notorious crime lord, it is a fortress-like safe house protecting them from the law. Even for the bravest and most experienced police officers it is considered a no-go area.

Criminal? Maybe. Fiona Apple was arrested for hashish possession Wednesday at a border checkpoint in Sierra Blanca, Texas, E! News confirmed. The singer-songwrter and professed pot afficionado was on her tour bus when the Border Patrol boarded with a drug-sniffing dog for a routine inspection. The pooch sussed out the marijuana and Apple was hauled in to the county jail. El Paso, Texas (AP) — Singer-songwriter Fiona Apple has been arrested for hashish possession at a West Texas town after a Border Patrol drug-sniffing dog detected marijuana in her tour bus. Hudspeth County sheriff's office spokesman Rusty Flemming says the artist spent Wednesday night in jail in Sierra Blanca and would be bonded out Thursday.
