White House Science and Technology Policy Director Arati Prabhakar called it "an engineering marvel beyond belief".
"This is such a wonderful example of a possibility realised, a scientific milestone achieved, and a road ahead to the possibilities for clean energy," she said at the announcement in Washington.
Fusion technology is the process by which two or more smaller atoms are combined or fused into a bigger one and in nature, it is how the sun and stars are powered.
What makes the breakthrough achieved at the National Ignition Facility (Nif) of the Lawrence Livermore Nuclear Laboratory (Llnl) a gamechanger is that it produced more energy than it used for lasers to create fusion, unlike in current energy production methods that consume more power than they put out.

The Clinton Global Initiative, the signature event of the Clinton Foundation, is returning next week after a six-year absence.
The lineup for the Sept. 19-20 event again includes a mix of international leaders, politicians, corporate executives and celebrity philanthropists. Many participants make measurable commitments to action on problems such as climate change and world hunger.
Among those in the lineup are Matt Damon, Bono, Ashley Judd, Robin Wright and Lin-Manuel Miranda, along with Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, Laurene Powell Jobs, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Jose Andres and Queen Rania of Jordan.
CGI, as it is known, was ended after the 2016 event, as Hillary Clinton was running for president and foreign donations to the foundation came under scrutiny.
The theme of this year’s event is “The Business of How,” and will include the announcement of a set of new commitments.

The nation’s biggest TV-news outlets have made it increasingly easy for top officials in the White House to have a presence in your house.
If White House press secretary Jen Psaki joins MSNBC as expected, she will be the second Biden official to land at the NBCUniversal-owned network in the space of less than a year. She will join Symone Sanders, a former campaign adviser to President Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders, at MSNBC, where she is taking on a weekend show that will also have a streaming presence.
Psaki declined to discuss her negotiations with MSNBC Friday during a White House press briefing, but two people familiar with the matter say she has been weighing potential roles with both CNN and MSNBC and should surface at the latter by autumn.

The fire at the plant reportedly has been extinguished, after the pictures of flames coming from the facility raised grace concerns of a nuclear disaster.

It’s an exaggeration to say that the future of human civilization depends on Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm’s charm and persuasiveness. But not by much. She has become the face of President Biden’s climate and clean-energy push – in the last two weeks, alone, she’s been to Houston, West Virginia, and Las Vegas, making the case for why Congress needs to pass the American Jobs Plan, a $2 trillion infrastructure package that would re-tool America for the end of fossil fuels and the beginning of the climate crisis. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm issued a warning to American companies: our adversaries have the capability to shut down the entire U.S. power grid.
When Granholm was asked by CNN’s Jake Tapper about vulnerabilities in the electricity grid and whether a foreign actor has the ability to shut it down, Granholm said, “Yeah, they do. There are thousands of attacks on all aspects of the energy sector and the private sector generally.”
She added, “It’s happening all the time. This is why the private sector and the public sector have to work together.

Maher had crowed about the booking early in the show (when he announced that “the candidate everyone wants to get” as a guest was waiting backstage) but then their interview got off to chippy start when Maher scoffed at the validity of spiritual psychotherapy just a heartbeat after Williamson had described it as the conceptual cornerstone of her 35-year writing and lecturing career.

It's time for the winter Television Critics Association press tour, which means there are lots of tidbits of news to chew. Yesterday, critics talked with NBC head Robert Greenblatt, who said that he's not sure when Hannibal will air, but it won't be until late in the TV season. Meanwhile, Michael J. Fox's upcoming sitcom will follow a newsman who has to give up his job after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and how his family adjusts, and they may make another attempt to reboot The Munsters.
Greenblatt also expressed faith in Days of Our Lives, saying "it's not going anywhere." That's a very welcome change from the days when Jeff Zucker was predicting impending cancellation for the soap. We're so lucky Zucker never got around to dumping Days for the ninth hour of The Today Show.

Current TV was sold to Al Jazeera for about $500 million, two people with knowledge of the deal told Bloomberg. Gore and partners paid about $71 million in 2004 for the channel that became Current TV. Gore, chairman, and Joel Hyatt, co-founder and CEO announced the sale Wednesday without providing terms. The deal gives Qatar-based Al Jazeera access to the biggest U.S. pay-tv carriers but Current’s viewership needs to increase significantly. Current averaged about 42,000 nightly primetime viewers last quarter, according to Horizon Media Inc. SNL Kagan cable analyst Derek Baine said the $500M price “sounds high”. Current TV’s owners had raised a total of $153 million including debt, according to NY-based research firm PrivCo. Related: Will Time Warner Cable Carry Al Jazeera America? Separately, former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm said yesterday on Facebook she will be leaving Current when her contract is up. Granholm, a Democrat who served two terms, said...

Election Day is finally here!
We’ve been bombarded with political ad after political ad (to the point that some of us burst into tears at the mention of President Barack Obama or Gov. Mitt Romney), but one of the most divisive presidential elections in U.S. history is almost over.
After you cast your ballot, you will most likely turn on the TV to watch the returns this evening. With more channels than ever, you will have to make one more choice before the clock strikes midnight: Which election coverage to watch.
Just as you should be informed about your presidential nominees, you should be informed about your election night coverage options. Check out the candidates below:
Broadcast Networks
• NBC: The Peacock network’s election special begins at 7:00 p.m. Est/4 p.m. Pst and lasts until 3 a.m. Est./12 a.m.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi visited Current TV's "The War Room" on Tuesday to talk about, as host Jennifer Granholm put it, how Democrats can "get their mojo back."
"Thank you so much for coming to give us some salve for our battered souls," joked Granholm before asking, "how bad is it?"
But the Minority Leader shooed away Granholm's pessimism. "We don't agonize; we organize," she replied.
Pelosi noted that the president still holds a lead in the polls, and that his lead is even stronger when all registered voters are included.
"For example, in Ohio it's four points among likely voters. It's ten points among registered voters," she explained. "So we have to make some of those registered voters likely voters."
"Everybody has to take personal responsibility," she continued. "If there's anything that came out of the debate it was to say that we all have to do...

Next Wednesday's first presidential debate marks Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's best, if not last, chance to get back into a presidential race that's slipping away from him like a 2-hour-and-change Paul Ryan marathon. While both sides are doing their best at managing expectations, former Michigan Governor and current Current TV host Jennifer Granholm predicts that President Obama will straight-up lose that first debate. While this is no time to go all Joe Namath on Romney, however, the President has advantages that no amount of debate prep can buy.

Commentator and comedian John Fugelsang will develop and host a primetime show for Current TV. The announcement was made during a live broadcast of Talking Liberally: The Stephanie Miller Show conducted at the TCA summer press tour. The show, which will tackle the political and cultural issues of the day with Fugelsang’s perspective that include taking in the Christian Right, is slated to premiere in the fall. In a story that now has more smoking guns than the Cheech and Chong Armory™, Current TV's The War Room with Jennifer Granholm reports that they've uncovered even more documents that contradict former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney's claim that he had nothing whatsoever to do with Bain Capital after February of 1999. Even if stubborn fact-checkers won't do their jobs, the rest of the media ought to do theirs, and report what these documents indisputably say.

Against overwhelming evidence that Republicans have plotted to obstruct everything President Obama does, even the things they agree with, the mainstream media has stubbornly insisted that "both sides" are the problem, that there's just a "polarization" problem in DC. In an interview on Current TV's The War Room with Jennifer Granholm, Politico's Joe Williams says that the press has been cowed into this perversion of "objectivity" by a right-wing that specializes in working the ref (I'm paraphrasing, of course).

As Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and leading Republican legislators hammer out a budget for the coming fiscal year, they've made the surprising decision to reinvest in the state's film industry, partially backtracking on last year's cuts to incentives.
In a target spending agreement announced Wednesday, an additional $25 million of one-time funding was put aside in the fiscal year 2013 budget for film industry subsidies, doubling the current allotment. According to MLive, the one-time funding is not expected to be renewed in coming years.
It's a surprising move for Snyder, who last year pushed extensive cuts to Michigan's film incentive program.
Started in 2008 under Gov. Jennifer Granholm in a move to attract studios and production crews, the state offered rebates of up to 42 percent of expenditures for movies made in Michigan. But last year, Snyder implemented a cap of just $25 million on the program for fiscal year 2012, small potatoes to large productions.
