There can be no doubt if there is one person bound and determined to keep Hollywood’s long history of Westerns alive, it has been Kevin Costner. Ok, well Clint Eastwood too.
And that has been true right from the beginning of Costner’s career, when he played the freewheeling scene stealer Jake in Lawrence Kasdan’s Silverado in 1985. He also made an impression as the title star of 1994’s Wyatt Earp. But his real mark on the genre has been not just as an actor but also as director and producer behind the scenes, first with his Best Picture Oscar-winning 1990 pic Dances with Wolves and 2003’s terrific Open Range with co-star Robert Duvall. Despite having won an Oscar for best director in 1991, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 is just the fourth film that the star has directed, and the first time he’s stepped behind the camera in more than 20 years.
Costner landed an Academy Award for his directorial debut, Dances With Wolves, which he followed with 1997’s The Postman and 2003’s Open Range; since then he’s largely focused on his acting and producing projects, but said he knew he needed to come back to the director’s chair for Horizon.
“Sometimes you wonder if you can still ride the bike, but what I knew was I believed so much in my story that I really was the one that needed to direct this,” Costner told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday. “I didn’t want to come away not bringing everything home...

In the more than 20 years that have passed since Kevin Costner last stood behind the camera and delivered his third feature as a director, 2003's well-received "Open Range," a lot has changed within the studio system. For one thing, there are fewer independent studios in operation these days compared to the turn of the century, when the very idea of Disney absorbing 20th Century Fox in a hostile takeover or Paramount Pictures desperately seeking a merger would've felt laughable. For another, the advent of streaming has completely upended the status quo, transforming bravura spectacles crafted specifically for theaters — even one directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola — into an exception rather than the rule. And, of course, ever-volatile moviegoer habits combined with a once-in-a-generation pandemic have further convinced industry bigwigs to embrace risk-averse strategies, spurning auteur-driven passion projects in favor of the safer shores of superheroes and other franchises.

Even Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) says the final season of Netflix hit “Stranger Things” is totally “bonkers.”
Bower said during the iHeart show “I’ve Never Said This Before With Tommy Didario” that the upcoming Season 5 is “out of control,” especially compared to Season 4.
“If you thought last season was nuts, this season is just out of control, wild, like, it’s bonkers. It really, really is,” Bower said. “It’s bigger. It’s just completely insane. It’s completely insane.”
Season 5 has already been teased to rival blockbuster films in terms of episode length, cost, and scale. Still, the “Stranger Things” universe is expanding so rapidly it can’t be contained to the series.
“It’s just continually building. It’s been really interesting as well to have the play on in London, which I went to go and see, which goes back to Henry before we met him...

What started as as a science fiction horror drama show, has become part of popular culture today. It would suffice to say that Stranger Things is one of the best and most popular TV shows ever to have been made. But as all journeys must end, this hit Netflix show too will be ending with its upcoming season 5.

After being delayed several months by the writers strike and the actors strike, season 5 of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things (which is also the last season of the show) finally went into production at the start of the year and is now six months into its twelve month shooting schedule… and according to cast member Jamie Campbell Bower, who joined the show in season 4 as the supernatural villain Henry Creel / Vecna, the episodes that make up the final season of Stranger Things are out of control and completely insane.
During an interview on iHeart’s I’ve Never Said This Before with Tommy Didario, Bower said (with thanks to The Hollywood Reporter for the transcription), “If you thought last season was nuts, this season is just out of control, wild, like it’s bonkers. Netflix’s Stranger Things is undoubtedly a pop-culture phenomenon and one of the most popular series that the streaming service has released. Ever. With a dash of 80s nostalgia combined with a great cast and superb writing, mixing fantasy, horror, sci-fi, and drama, Stranger Things is a series that will definitely go down in history due to the cultural impact it had. As the sad fans know, nine years after the premiere, the series will officially end next year with its fifth and final season, bringing the story that the Duffer Brothers conceived to an end. Filming of Season 5 is heavily underway, and while we have received some official filming photos, some leaks have also appeared online.
The most recent batch of leaks is related to Vecna, the series’ main villain, who is played by Jamie Campbell Bower, and part of whose origins were revealed in Season 4. As Hawkins will...

Take a look at more footage from Oscar winning director Kevin Costner’s new 4-part movie series "Horizon: An American Saga", rated 'R' for "violence, nudity and sexuality," chronicling a 15-year span of pre-and post-'Civil War' settlement of the ‘American Old West’, releasing June 28, 2024 (Chapter 1) and August 16, 2024 (Chapter 2) in theaters:
"A lot of times we measure ourselves against other generations," said Costner about his new film series.
"I think about what was at stake. How did people survive? There's a rawness and an unpredictability about it. I'm haunted by that."
Costner, in addition to directing, stars in "Horizon", alongside his son Hayes Costner, who plays the young Costner.

Kevin Costner spent $38 million of his own money to finance his new Western film Horizon: An American Saga. Well, the early tracking numbers are in, and the news is not good: the first part of Horizon is currently projected to make $12 million in its opening weekend of release on June 28th (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Horizon has been Costner’s passion project for decades, having first begun working on it in 1988. Now, decades later, he’s finally set to unveil the first part of what he ultimately hopes to be a four-installment film franchise that he will write, direct, and star in himself. The total budget for the first two films sits around $100 million, with Costner himself having personally contributed $38 million to the overall budget (apparently by mortgaging his house). The remaining chunk was reportedly financed through foreign sales.

The latest batch of set photos from the Atlanta production of Netflix’s Stranger Things Season 5 has given fans an intriguing first look at Jamie Campbell Bower’s return. Bower is set to reprise his menacing role as Vecna/Henry Creel, initially introduced as the main antagonist in Season 4. Shared on social media platform X, these behind-the-scenes images show Bower filming at the Creel House, dressed in an all-brown suit. This raises speculation that Vecna might regain his human form to return to the real world, suggesting a significant twist in Season 5 after spending years trapped in the Upside Down.

Academy Award-winning visionary filmmaker Kevin Costner directs New Line Cinema’s vast Horizon: An American Saga Chapters One and Two, a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. A story of America too big for one film, this true cinematic event also stars Costner, who co-writes with Jon Baird (The Explorers Guild) and produces through his Territory Pictures.
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions today released the first look trailer for the world premiere West End production of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, taking the moment to also announce an extension into 2025 of the production’s London run.
This past March, casting notices for a Broadway production suggested a New York run for Stranger Things: The First Shadow is in the works.
In the new trailer, the telekinetic Creel (played on the West End by Louis McCartney) is depicted in a sort of prequel to the events of the Netflix TV series. Specifically, a terrified Creel is just beginning to suspect his gifts, and seems none too thrilled. “I’m Henry Creel. I’m normal. It’s not real. I’m normal. It’s not real. I’m normal. It’s not real. I’m normal. It’s not real. I’m Henry Creel.”

Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the U.K. stage play based on the hit Netflix series, has dropped another trailer looking at the drama’s biggest villain, Henry Creel.
“It’s not real. I’m normal,” an anguished Creel, the telekinetic boy played by Louis McCartney, repeatedly declares in the latest teaser for the stage play. Directed by Stephen Daldry and co-director Justin Martin, the play has been extended to 2025 in London’s West End, as reports point to a possible transfer and premiere on Broadway next year.
The 1959-set prequel centers around younger versions of characters in the Netflix Stranger Things series characters, including Patty Newby (Ella Karuna Williams), Joyce Maldonado ( Isabella Pappas), Jim Hopper Jr. (Oscar Lloyd) and Bob Newby (Christopher Buckley).

Joe Keery got a key, early endorsement from Taylor Swift for his hit song, “End of Beginning.”
During an appearance on The Spout Podcast, the actor-musician shared an anecdote from the day he and Swift were both spotted at the Electric Lady recording studio in New York City. The Tortured Poets Department singer-songwriter told the Stranger Things star she “really liked the track.”
“I just happened to be there the day that she was there. And she’s really nice. I mean, I’ve met her a couple of times. Before anything happened with this track, she said, ‘Hey, I really love that track of yours, ‘End Of Beginning,’” Keery said on the podcast. “She just said that she had heard the song and, you know, obviously I’m like, ‘What? Yellowstone star Kevin Costner will return to the Western genre with his film series Horizon: An American Saga, the first part of which is set to arrive in theaters June 28. The first film in a planned four-arc installment premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival to an 11-minute 40-second standing ovation, which brought the actor to tears.
Costner, who stars in and directs the Western installments, has been wanting to bring this project to the screen since 1988 when he started dreaming it up. He cowrote it with Jon Baird. The Dances With Wolves star revealed that production has begun for the third film and that he has plans to make a fourth. The second part of the series will follow the first with a theatrical release this summer.

Kevin Costner confirmed in a new GQ magazine cover story that reports claiming he spent $20 million of his own money to co-finance his new Western epic “Horizon: An American Saga” are not true, as he actually contributed more than that from his personal bank account.
“I know they say I’ve got $20 million of my own money in this movie,” Costner said. “It’s not true. I’ve got now about $38 million in the film. That’s the truth. That’s the real number.”
Costner funded “Horizon: An American Saga” alongside two investors who he has not yet publicly named. The Western saga spans four movies, two of which were shot back to back. Scale, sweep, or schadenfreude; whatever you might be seeking in the films of Kevin Costner, you tend to walk away with the vistas. Think of the golden plains and stampeding buffalo of his directorial debut Dances with Wolves; or the jaw-dropping aerial shot of scavengers circling the atoll in Waterworld; and lest we forget The Postman, a work even the most harebrained viewers haven’t found the energy to reappraise, which still left you with an image of The Sound of Music projected onto a quarry wall, not to mention that statue of himself constructed for the film’s whacky finale. For better or worse, they aren’t easily forgotten.

Editor’s Note: This review originally ran during the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Warner Bros. releases “Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1” in theaters on June 28.
Good luck to you and all who plod along dusty roads with you if the first chapter of Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga” compels you to seek out the forthcoming second one. This Civil War-era, Old West expansion epic is a $100 million vanity project that finds the actor/filmmaker in familiar terrain, and with the gall to cast himself as an apparently swoon-inducing cowboy in a world where all the women are either ball busters, prostitutes, or profoundly stupid, and the men hayseeds or Great American Heroes.

Kevin Costner got candid about partly self-financing his new movie, “Horizon: An American Saga,” at a Cannes Film Festival press conference on Monday.
Costner put much of his own fortune into making the $100 million-plus film, including mortgaging his ranch. He directs and stars in the film, which he also produced and co-wrote.
When asked about his struggle to finance the film, Costner said, “I don’t know why it was so hard.”
“You saw the movie. I don’t know why it was so hard to get people to believe in the movie that I wanted to make,” he continued. “You know, I don’t think my movie is better than anybody else’s movie, but I don’t think anybody else’s movie is better than mine. I don’t go out into the world with something I don’t think is good.”

For the last two years in a row, one of the major premieres at the Cannes Film Festival has been a mainstream film that works with the trappings and tropes of the Western genre. But there’s not much connection between Martin Scorsese’s Oklahoma-set 1920s period piece “Killers of the Flower Moon,” one of the hits of last year’s festival, and Kevin Costner’s “Horizon: An American Saga,” which had its premiere at the Grand Theatre Lumiere on Sunday evening.
For Scorsese, approaching that location and time period meant thinking hard about what he could bring to a genre that he felt had peaked with directors like John Ford and Howard Hawks in the 1940s and ’50s, and essentially been ended by Sam Peckinpah’s revisionist Western “The Wild Bunch” in the late 1968s.

“Horizon: An American Saga,” Kevin Costner’s risk-it-all Western epic, rode into Cannes on Sunday, earning a seven-minute standing ovation.
Costner was visibly emotional as the film received huge applause and chants of “Kevin! Kevin! Kevin!” During his speech, Costner thanked the audience and promised “three more” installments of the “Horizon” franchise, which is already due to get a sequel in August.
“I’m sorry you had to clap that long for me to understand that I should speak,” Costner said to laughter. “Such good people. Such a good moment, not just for me, but for the actors that came with me, for people who believed in me who continued to work. It’s a funny business, and I’m so glad I found it. There’s no place like here. I’ll never forget this — either will my children.”

Kevin Costner has been in the saddle long enough to know the difference between a big-screen feature Western like Dances With Wolves, a miniseries like Hatfields & McCoys or a longform like Yellowstone. All those projects have done well by him and he’s done well by them. His connection to the quintessential Americana genre and the rugged lands it calls home is indubitable. So why is his sprawling new frontier tale, Horizon: An American Saga, such a clumsy slog? It plays like a limited series overhauled as a movie, but more like a hasty rough cut than a release ready for any format.

If you thought the first trailer was intense, it’s not intense compared to the second one, which suavely showed off Costner’s gun-slinging and tough-talking character. And that stand-off with Jamie Campbell Bower is sure to give your goosebumps goosebumps.
Kevin Costner – Shares New Look At His Upcoming Two-part Western Movie
The first trailer showed us the chaos that envelopes a town when settlers move in, and the second one is taking us deep into the heart of the whole process that led to the massive unrest.
While you may claim to have seen Kevin Costner in a western movie for many years – re ‘Yellowstone’ – you haven’t seen him in this one.
Let’s just say he’s a tad more brutal within this new environment.
Apart from showing us the breathtaking landscapes, we’re also introduced to more characters and we get to see and understand more of Costner’s character.

Kevin Costner is all set to debut his dream project Horizon: An American Saga at the Cannes Film Festival. The maverick filmmaker is returning to the director’s chair after over two decades and is again exploring the Western genre. The Dances with Wolves star has previously won Oscars for his work and his last directorial, Open Range, was also a Western.
Costner’s Horizon will be released in two parts, the first chapter of which will be premiering at Cannes. The film’s second trailer was released ahead of its premiere, showing a more action-packed traditional Western that invokes the Dollars trilogy of Sergio Leone. Fans have already hailed it as a superior successor to Costner’s previous show Yellowstone.

Costner, in addition to directing, stars in "Horizon", alongside his son Hayes Costner, who plays the young Costner.

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the new trailer and character posters for New Line Cinema’s Horizon: An American Saga, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Kevin Costner. Horizon: An American Saga is a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West.
A story of Americana and patriotism too big for one film, this true cinematic event also stars Costner, who co-wrote the script with Jon Baird (The Explorers Guild) and produces through his Territory Pictures.
Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute two films in the saga this summer – the first on June 28, 2024, followed quickly by the second on August 16, 2024. The first film is rated R for violence, some nudity, and sexuality.
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won — and lost — through the blood, sweat, and tears of many.

Kevin Costner‘s two-part western epic passion project is just over the horizon. The first part of Horizon: An American Saga premieres next month and Warner Bros. has just released the new official second trailer for the film. The Yellowstone actor has returned to the director’s seat for the first time in over twenty years for these films. Costner began work on this story in 1988 and he has more movies planned. The main character that he invented for this film in 1988 was so important to him that he even named his son, Hayes, after him. He hopes the movies can be a big franchise and that years from now, people can binge-watch hours of Horizon in theaters.
In addition to directing and starring in the two-film saga, Kevin Costner also produced the project and co-wrote the script alongside Jon Baird. “In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns,...

We’re big champions of physical media here at JoBlo, and despite ongoing claims that it will soon be going the way of the Dodo, we’ve yet to see its demise. Kevin Costner is also a big fan of physical media, and when asked by Deadline about the supposed “death of the DVD,” he was quick to jump to its defence.
“Death of the what? DVD is not dead, at all,” Kevin Costner said. “That’s what they’d have you believe. Maybe it’s not making the same amount of money, but just try to go ask for that from the studio. They won’t give that up. A lot of people that like my movies, they can’t get to a theater, and they’re waiting for that moment. You can’t make your film for the opening weekend. You have to make it for its life.

It’s almost time for the Fantasia Film Festival! North America’s premiere genre festival has become the place to be if you’re a horror aficionado, and as a proud Montrealer, I get a kick out of the fact that it all takes place in my home city. I’ve been attending the festival for many years, and I always end up seeing some incredible movies. Last year’s Fantasia featured the Canadian premiere of what’s probably the best horror movie of the last year or so – Late Night With The Devil, and this year’s program seems certain to be another winner, with Fantasia announcing the first wave of titles today.
