At least one auld acquaintance won’t be present for CNN’s annual coverage of the nation’s New Year’s Eve festivities.
Sara Sidner and Cari Champion will take over the Warner Bros. Discovery network’s wee-hours broadcast on New Year’s Eve, holding forth from Austin, Texas, during a slot that for years served as a showcase for raucous antics from Don Lemon. Lemon and CNN parted ways earlier this year after management tried to move him from a prominent primetime show to the network’s morning program.
Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen will return as hosts of CNN’s main coverage of the evening. The broadcast will feature performances by Enrique Iglesias, Maroon 5, Jonas Brothers, Flo Rida, Miranda Lambert, Darius Rucker and Rod Stewart and live interviews with Patti Labelle, Jeremy Renner, Neil Patrick Harris, Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers.

CNN’s Brianna Keilar visibly shed tears during a Tuesday segment with correspondent Stephanie Elam about the recent mass shooting at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado.
“As I’m hearing you report this, I just wonder, can you count how many times you’ve covered a story like this? Have you lost count?” Keilar asked Elam.
“I don’t know anymore. And it makes me sad to even sit here and even think about that, Brianna, that there’s been so many times that we have had to go out and cover these stories and talk to people who are devastated. Their lives will never be the same because of this,” Elam, who began to choke up at times, said. “Sometimes it happens close to where you’ve grown up, so you can think about it in that way, and sometimes it happens far away, but it’s still the same.

CNN will bring Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen together for the fourth year in a row for “CNN New Year’s Eve,” where the two hosts will undoubtedly fill the night reflecting on the insane year that was 2020. Unlike previous years, Cooper and Cohen won’t be surrounded by a crowd crush of people — you can thank the pandemic for that. But they still plan to broadcast their show live from the historic spot as they do every year.
The night will kick off at 8 p.m. Et, and include performances from John Mayer, Snoop Dogg, Patti Labelle, Jimmy Buffett, Carole Baskin, Josh Groban, Leslie Jordan, Dulce Sloan, Desus & Mero, Kylie Minogue, Aloe Blacc, Goo Goo Dolls and Jon Bon Jovi.
If music’s not your thing and you’re feeling a bit of wanderlust, don’t worry — the night will also feature appearances from CNN’s Ana Cabrera, Stephanie Elam,...

When Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen try to show CNN viewers the sights and sounds of New Year’s Eve in Times Square this year, they will face one of their biggest challenges: There won’t be any.
The throngs of people who come to see the fabled ball drop in what is billed as New York’s “Crossroads of the World” won’t be in attendance, due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic. For Cooper and Cohen, however, the show must go on.
People at home will want to watch and ring out a terrible year, says Cooper. “We want it to be a New Year’s Eve without all the mishegoss. You don’t have to have all the sturm and drang. You can just stay home and watch us go through it,” he says, in an interview. Besides, says Cohen, “I certainly pledge to get Anderson as...
