What can we say about the recently deceased Michael (Andy Karl)? He was a actor - he probably gave a performance somewhere which moved somebody. He was a well meaning guy who had good friendships. He had good family relationships, too, and loved his dear old mum. Unfortunately for him, none of this matters, because shortly before his car is hit by a truck, he's broken up with his girlfriend, and it turns out that the only thing that matters in the afterlife is romantic love.
These are, at any rate, the rules as presented by Scarlett, some kind of afterlife clerk who takes it upon herself to instruct Michael that he will have to return to Earth as a ghost until he can find his one true love. This seems particularly unfair as she's played by Christina Ricci in a white wig and anybody who sets eyes on her is.

"Are you worried a new dead guy will show up and sweep me off my feet?" Vertical Ent. has debuted an official trailer for an amusing romantic comedy titled Here After, previously known as Faraway Eyes when it initially premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival last year. This is a dark fantasy-comedy about the meaning of love in the afterlife. When an actor dies after a bad breakup, he finds himself stuck in "singles Purgatory" where he must find his soul mate in order to cross over to the other side. Ha! And you thought dating in real life was hard, just wait until the "ghostly dating scene". The film stars Andy Karl as Michael, with Christina Ricci, Nora Arnezeder, Jackie Cruz, and Michael Rispoli. This reminds me a bit of The Lobster at first, about being stuck somewhere until you find a partner. It looks quite sweet, I'm curious.

“I’ve kind of found this perfect balance” says Orfeh in regards to adapting roles from beloved films. The actress currently stars as Kit De Luca in “Pretty Woman: The Musical,” and has previously tackled film-to-stage adaptations like “Footloose,” “Saturday Night Fever,” and her Tony nominated turn as Paulette in “Legally Blonde.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
That balance she says, involves blending her own signature style with aspects from the film that have become iconic. In this way she satisfies both Broadway diehards and the movie audiences who buy tickets based on the title alone. She refers to the audience as “the next character” in the show. In the rehearsal room, actors are performing for the creative team or producers. “They’re not going to give the reactions that a paying audience member is going to give” she says. Last year, “The Band’s Visit” stormed the ceremony with a whopping 10 wins, including Best Musical. Tony Award-nominee Adam Pascal is set to star in Pretty Woman: The Musical for one week. The original Roger from the landmark musical Rent will step into the role of Edward Lewis from Jan. 15-20.
“Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance have written a premiere romantic rock score for Pretty Woman: The Musical and we are ecstatic to have one of Broadway’s foremost rockers, Adam Pascal, step in for Andy Karl during his vacation,” said producer Paula Wagner.
“I always love a reason to come back to Broadway,” said Pascal, “so singing this score opposite Samantha Barks, in this sexy, romantic musical for eight performances was a no-brainer.”
Based on the classic Garry Marshall movie starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, Pretty Woman: The Musical has played to sold-out audiences at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre and has shattered the box office records since opening July 20. Grammy Award winner Bryan Adams...

The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the first time in the 2018-2019 Broadway season, and announced the first round of Tony Awards eligibility rulings. Seven productions were discussed at this meeting: “The Boys in the Band,” “Straight White Men,” “Head Over Heels,” “Gettin’ the Band Back Together,” “Pretty Woman,” “Bernhardt/Hamlet,” and “The Nap.”
The Tonys committee made the following determinations:
“The Boys in the Band” will be considered a revival per the “classic” rule and eligible for Best Play Revival.
Jim Parsons will be eligible for Lead Actor in a Play for “The Boys in the Band.”
Julian Crouch (scenic designer) and Andrew Lazarow (projection designer) will be considered jointly eligible for Best Scenic Design of a Musical for “Head Over Heels.”
Mitchell Jarvis will be eligible for Lead Actor in a Musical for “Gettin’ the Band Back Together.”

Joe Mantello’s recent Broadway staging of Mart Crowley’s The Boys in the Band will be eligible for a 2019 Tony Award – no surprise there – but theater trivia buffs might quibble with the category: Best Revival of a Play.
Although the gay groundbreaker has been staged many times since its Off Broadway debut in 1968, The Boys in the Band had never made its way to Broadway until Mantello’s star-packed production last April. So revival, or new play?
Revival, says the Tony Awards Administration Committee.
The decision was one of six announced today. Although the committee does not publicly explain its decisions, Boys’ 50-year production history – Broadway notwithstanding – apparently persuaded the committee toward the revival designation.
The designation was made during the first of four scheduled meetings planned by the committee for the 2018-2019 Broadway season. Other determinations made today:

Samantha Barks didn’t watch Julia Roberts and Richard Gere’s iconic “Pretty Woman” in preparation for her starring role in the new Broadway musical adaptation of the 1990 film.
“It’s so hard to watch it because it’s such a beautiful, iconic performance,” Barks, who plays Vivian Ward, the hooker with a heart of gold, told Variety on Thursday at the musical’s opening night. “You can’t do your own thing for a minute and breathe. We’re lucky we have so many songs to sing, which adds new layers to the character.”
Though Roberts didn’t attend opening night at the Nederlander Theatre, she came to a performance while the show was running previews. The part of Vivian Ward launched Roberts into superstardom, so naturally, Barks said it was “petrifying” performing for her.

Prostitutes, once a staple of the Broadway musical, have been keeping a low profile in recent years. The old fantasy of sleeping with guys and making good money yielded long ago to real horror stories of exploitation, sexism, drug addiction and human trafficking. None of which has stopped Garry Marshall and J. F. Lawton from turning their hit 1990 movie “Pretty Woman” into a Broadway musical, which opened Thursday at the Nederlander Theatre.
Marshall directed the movie and Lawton wrote the screenplay, and they’re credited this time around as writers of the book, which means “Pretty Woman” the musical is a too-faithful adaptation of the original.
They have made one small but important update. The heroine’s seamy occupation is acknowledged at the get-go by turning her first song into a heartfelt lament, “Anywhere but Here,” effectively delivered in country style by a strong-voiced Samantha Barks.

When the 1990 movie comedy “Pretty Woman” catapulted Julia Roberts to stardom, it was widely reported that Disney and late director Garry Marshall had tweaked J.F. Lawton’s downbeat prostitute/john tale “Three Thousand” into a sumptuous rom-com, to the profit of all concerned. Its newest incarnation sanitizes the tale completely. With anything mature or sensual systematically removed, “Pretty Woman: The Musical” goes all-in on fantasy, casting two sizzling talents, Samantha Barks and Andy Karl, as bland, pretty people singing pretty Bryan Adams-Jim Vallance tunes with nothing much at stake. Stubbornly inconsequential, it’s a morally uplifting fairy tale of which everyone, young and old alike, can be skeptical.
The Lawton-Marshall libretto fundamentally sticks to the screenplay line by line, joke by joke. Multimillionaire corporate raider Edward Lewis (Karl) hops in a brand-new 1989 Lotus Esprit and, in an impulse maybe only Hugh Grant could explain, whisks streetwalker Vivian Ward (Barks) from Hollywood Blvd.

Much to fans’ delight, Pretty Woman: The Musical stays true to the 1990 original movie!
The rags-to-riches story of Vivian Ward falling in love with wealthy businessman Edward Lewis hits the Big Apple in August with Samantha Barks stepping into the vinyl boots of Oscar-winning actress Julia Roberts while Andy Karl suits up to play the wealthy businessman previously portrayed by Richard Gere.
People has an exclusive look of just how similar the upcoming production is to the Garry Marshall-directed rom-com — and these three juxtaposed fan-favorite scenes will stop you from saying, “Big mistake. Big. Huge.”

Broadway’s Pretty Woman: The Musical passed the $1 million box office mark for a second consecutive week — no doubt the beginning of a habit — playing seven previews, including one heavily-comped tribute performance for the late Garry Marshall.
The previewing musical, at the Nederlander Theatre starring Samantha Barks and Andy Karl, grossed $1,008,726, a drop of about $60,000 from the previous week, reflecting the August 2 memorial performance. Marshall co-authored the musical that is set to open August 16 and, of course, directed the original 1990 film.
Broadway’s overall box office of $36,391,385 for the week ending August 5 (Week 10 of the season) was down about 8% from the previous week’s $39.6M. The Week 10 total is 14% bigger than last year’s $32M, with this year’s average ticket price of $128 about 8% heftier than last year’s $120.

Three-time Tony Award nominee Andy Karl, last seen on Broadway in Groundhog Day, has been cast as the male lead in the upcoming Pretty Woman: The Musical. He’ll play Edward Lewis (Richard Gere in the 1990 movie) opposite Samantha Barks’ Vivian (the role that made a superstar of Julia Roberts).
Karl, who won an Olivier Award for the London production of Groundhog Day and also starred in Broadway’s Saturday Night Fever, replaces Steve Kazee, who left the Pretty Woman production for family reasons, according to producers.
The new musical, which begins performances July 20 at the Nederlander Theatre, also stars Karl’s real-life wife Orfeh, a Tony nominee for Legally Blonde. Karl had seen the show in pre-Broadway workshops and the Chicago run.
