If a crisis erupts on board a commercial aircraft, you want to know the flight attendants are prepared to handle any desperate situation. Chris, Wes, and Clear, the cabin crew in the comedic short Cock N’ Bull 3, are not those guys. They’re more likely to be the cause of an emergency than the ones resolving it.
Wes (Danny Rhodes) provides a running stream of non-faa approved commentary over the Pa system. Chris (Nathan Adloff) locks eyes with an older man within minutes of takeoff. Later, he tumbles out of the forward lavatory with his shirt off, apparently having just joined the Mile High Club with his gentleman friend. Clear (Pete Zias) declares, “I wanna get fucked in there!”
Things only get more chaotic on the ill-fated red eye from L.A. to New York, after the pilot mysteriously becomes incapacitated. Cock N’ Bull 3, directed by Adloff and co-written by Adloff and Rhodes,...

Should we be concerned about Kyle?
Many things happened on The Resident Season 3 Episode 12, but the most concerning storyline was Conrad discovering his future father-in-law might be suicidal.
With two cases putting the spotlight on how healthcare affects middle-class and rural communities and some new relationships taking off, it was another solid hour.
Join TV Fanatics Meaghan Frey, Carissa Pavlica, and Rachel Foertsch as they discuss it.
Do you like it when the series is patient-focused and addresses some of the trials, tribulations, and experiences of those patients within the system?
Meaghan: Absolutely. The continued critique of the healthcare system is one of the hallmarks of the show. Showing the effects of the downsides of the system on the patients is the perfect way to highlight these issues.
Carissa: The Resident does a good job of balancing patient stories with whatever doctors or the staff at Chastain are experiencing at the time,...

In the third episode of Shrill, the new Hulu comedy based on Lindy West’s same-named memoir, Annie, a thirtyish magazine editor played by Aidy Bryant, attends a pool party. There, for the first time, she enters a world filled with people who look like her: fat women, drinking, dancing, swimming and sunning themselves — “living in their bodies and enjoying their lives,” Annie marvels.
It’s a remarkable moment not just for her but also for the viewer. Like Annie, TV watchers are unaccustomed to seeing so many thick women share so many frames.

The Women’s Image Awards has announced its 2018 nominations, with the BBC miniseries “Little Women” that aired on PBS’ “Masterpiece” series earning a leading six bids on the TV side. As for films, “Mary Queen of Scots” secured five spots on the ballot, followed by the Ruth Bader Ginsberg biopic “On the Basis of Sex” and Melissa McCarthy’s “Can Your Ever Forgive Me,” both with four.
Given the #MeToo and Time’s Up movement’s push against sexual harassment and lack of equal opportunity for women in Hollywood, the fact that an organization like Women’s Image Awards exists is more important than ever. The group that is celebrating its 20th anniversary has just announced its nominations in 18 categories. The TV and film nominees are selected from a field of submissions from networks and studios.

The sober and gripping “Dead Women Walking” focuses on the final days of a series of female inmates facing the death sentence. Divided into nine chapters, each inching its way inexorably closer to the moment of execution, the drama turns the fragmentation of its approach to a powerful advantage. Not only do the individual stories — hard, jagged and persuasive — become tiles in a more complex mosaic, taken together they also give a peculiar experience of time that judders and halts, elongates and foreshortens. It’s impossible for most of us to say if this is an accurate representation of temporal reality for these characters, but it makes even those of us who are convinced we understand the issues around capital punishment consider it in a stark new light. This is not a film about the death penalty; it’s a film about the systems and practices we collectively call Death Row.

Only author Sarai Walker, who initially penned the novel Dietland, knows what the future holds for Plum Kettle.
AMC announced today it's the end of the road for the vengeance-driven heroine on their network.
When we last saw Plum, she chose the resistance, getting into a car with the group called Jennifer, and we knew her life would never be the same.
All signs were pointing toward a renewal of the powerful dramedy helmed by Marti Noxon, who in August chatted with The Hollywood Reporter and shared they had a writers' room, were back at work and were breaking story for the upcoming season, all signs pointing to good news on the horizon.

“Dietland” has been canceled at AMC after one season.
The series starring Joy Nash and Julianna Margulies was a hit with many critics but drew a small audience that declined over the show’s 10-episode run, which ended in August. AMC had high hopes for the show that revolved around themes of beauty and female empowerment. The cabler also carried a companion after-show, “Unapologetic,” hosted by Aisha Tyler.

One of its most notable issues about Netflix’s “Insatiable” is the fact that while the dark comedy is about a young woman who loses a dramatic amount of weight and becomes a beauty pageant contestant, the character of Patty is played by the very thin Debby Ryan, who wears a fat suit for her pre-transformation scenes. To quote Linda Holmes of NPR:
Since all but the first few minutes of Patty’s story involve Patty as a thin girl, these early scenes show star Debby Ryan, a very thin actress, in a fat suit. What that means is that her fat body is just a thin girl galumphing around strapped up in pillows she is not used to, meaning she can only appear graceless and unformed, like a guy on a street corner in a hot dog costume. To the degree a real fat girl might have a sway to her hips,...

If you haven't figured it out by now, as women's rights are back into the spotlight thanks to such movements as #MeToo and #TimesUp, Dietland is more than just a TV show.
And like the show itself, Joy Nash (Plum), Tamara Tunie (Julia), Robin Weigert (Verena), and Selenis Leyva (Soledad/Belle) are more than just the stars of Dietland, they've found themselves included in the larger discussion because fate made it so.

Advice-column-ghostwriter-turned-feminist-anarchist Plum Kettle faces a crucial choice in Dietland‘s Season 1 finale: Go back to bemoaning her life as the victim of the dissatisfaction industrial complex (aka patriarchy, and the beauty norms that go along with it), or stand with some women who are determined to disrupt the system via any means necessary.
The AMC series’ season-ender, which aired Monday, finds Plum deciding to stay with the women of the terrorist group Jennifer — despite leader Soledad’s offer to let her pretend she was just their hostage all along.

We need to take a moment to appreciate the voiceovers which happen every single episode. They set things up perfectly.
It's fascinating to see how radical Plum has gotten on Dietland Season 1 Episode 8, but it's a testament to the Jennifer movement.
Verena was right about the group taking things too far, but Plum sees them as a group of women who are demanding justice in the world. While the message is appreciated, the group doesn't have the right to threaten women who don't listen.
Plum sees these women as pioneers, but they are quickly turning into much more, and their message is getting lost in the threats, and the murder, they continue to commit.

If you ever wanted to know how sex toys were made you were in for a real treat tonight.
I really enjoyed the way Dietland Season 1 Episode 5 began with Plum's voiceover talking about the way her dates begin. We've all been there – overthinking how a date is going to go before it even begins.
Unfortunately for Plum the thoughts she had were things she genuinely experienced time and time again. I wanted to smack the guy when he just gave Plum the flowers and told her it wasn't going to work out.
It is disheartening to see the way human beings treat each other just because they look different. What makes it even worse is Plum wasn't even phased by it anymore. She's grown accustomed to men just putting her off because of the size she is.

When IndieWire first spoke to “Dietland” creator Marti Noxon about her new AMC dark comedy, she mentioned a number of influences on the show. But while the premise has elicited more than one comparison to a lady version of “Fight Club,” Noxon’s go-to inspiration was “The Wizard of Oz,” specifically in how it visually represented the journey of self-discovery for Plum (Joy Nash).
“When I kept talking about visual references, I was like, I don’t want it to be one of these gray shows,” she said. “I don’t want it to be all blue saturated. I want it to be like a technicolor. It has a kind of musical quality. There are drab places, but then there are these other places that are just hyper-colored. Plum starts in kind of Kansas, but where she ends up should be over the rainbow. It should be colorful,...

There were so many moments happening on the premiere that made me scream out, "I've said the same thing about myself!"
Can we all take a moment to appreciate how well executed the first few minutes of Dietland Season 1 Episode 1, were put together?
The various women from the letters Plum had read describing all of the things they disliked about themselves made it incredibly relatable on a lot of levels. It's rare to see a show, right off the bat, start with a message saying you aren't alone in the feelings you have.
Let's start by discussing just how wonderful Plum is. I fell in love with her within the first two minutes of her being on screen. When she mentioned she was called Plum because of her being succulent, but in the same breath said it's because she was fat – it just got me.

AMC’s new series “Dietland” got a rewrite after the Harvey Weinstein sexual misconduct scandal captured national attention, showrunner Marti Noxon told TheWrap.
“I think that we were lucky that the story about Harvey broke when we were just location scouting, and none of the scripts had been shot yet,” Noxon said. “We did rewrite to reflect a kind of ‘post-reckoning world,” she added, saying audiences will notice the theme more “as the story progresses.”
“Dietland,” which was already about women reclaiming their power from misogynistic men and abusers, provides “the next extension of the Me Too movement,” Noxon said. “What if people took it even to the next level and went after the predators who are active today?”

After working in the industry for nearly two decades, Marti Noxon is having quite the summer. The showrunner has two series about complicated women being unleashed on the screen: HBO’s upcoming “Sharp Objects,” which comes out this July, as well as “Dietland,” which premieres Monday on AMC.
It’s the culmination of years of work, as Noxon dove into production on “Dietland” right after shooting on “Sharp Objects” ended. “We’re still doing cuts of both of them,” she told IndieWire when we first spoke in May. “Sometimes it’s like I’m living in two very different worlds. But they both thematically have quite a bit in common. It’s exciting. I mean, both of them are really unique female characters.”

Watching AMC’s new drama Dietland is kind of like eating at a buffet that serves every variety of cuisine imaginable. You fill up your plate with baby back ribs, and mushroom risotto, and an egg roll… and suddenly, you’re feeling queasy.
I had a hard time digesting the first two episodes of Dietland — which premiere back-to-back on Monday at 9/8c — because it tries to be three very different shows at once. It’s a Devil Wears Prada-esque workplace dramedy, and also a warts-and-all look at a overweight woman’s struggle to accept herself, and also a Sweet/Vicious-style...

Like many overstuffed stories desperate to maintain the appearance that things are safely in order, “Dietland” heavily utilizes voiceover narration. Early on, Plum Kettle (Joy Nash) alerts the audience that her voice is indeed coming from the future, framing the new AMC drama as a memoir of sorts. That gels with the novel that birthed it, which was partly inspired by author Sarai Walker’s experience at women’s magazines, but it doesn’t justify the choice in Marti Noxon’s TV show.
This “Dietland” is a lot of things. It’s a personal take on Plum’s quest to lose weight and a social activism piece about fat-shaming and cultural misogyny. With so many important causes to explore, it should come as no surprise a handful individual moments hit home, especially when Nash is allowed to say her piece in character, in the moment, rather than reiterate Plum’s...

Welcome to “Remote Controlled,” a podcast from Variety featuring the best and brightest in television, both in front of and behind the camera.
In this week’s episode, Variety‘s executive editor of TV, Debra Birnbaum, talks with Julianna Margulies, who’s making her return to series TV with AMC’s new drama “Dietland.”
Margulies says she wasn’t necessarily looking for another role after finishing her 7-year run on “The Good Wife,” but she was completely “taken” by Marti Noxon’s scripts — and the opportunity to play a character unlike anything she’d played before. “I always play the girl with her heart on the sleeve. I do miss Alicia Florrick. I still miss Carol Hathaway, but this was so far away from who they are,” she says. “The role of Kitty Montgomery, she’s such a bitch, and she has no moral center. When I first saw a trailer for “Dietland,” I couldn’t understand the “Devil Wears Prada” meets “Fight Club” divided by “9 to 5″ story it was trying to sell. But after actually seeing a few episodes of “Dietland” … well, the same confusion holds true.
Marti Noxon’s adaptation of Sarai Walker’s novel is purposefully strange and gleefully defies categorization. At first, it looks like the show will be about Plum Kettle (Joy Nash) ghostwriting for an ice queen magazine editor (Julianna Margulies) while struggling to accept herself in a world that too often tells her she’s too big to fit in or find lasting happiness.
Then it pivots into an ominous case of corporate espionage as Plum is recruited by a secretly seething coworker (Tamara Tunie) to turn on the beauty industry that’s shut women like her out. That becomes further complicated when a seemingly benign...

In a few short weeks, at the end of June, we’ll be halfway through 2018.
Anyway, now that Emmys eligibility is over, it’s time to turn to the offerings across broadcast, cable, and streaming that are part of a new calendar. There’s a glut of great TV from this year already, but this upcoming June collection means not only another strong batch of best-of-2018 contenders, but also one with the most diverse ways to watch that we’ve ever assembled for these monthly preview lists.
(By the way, if you’ve missed any of those previous picks, here are some notable TV premieres from February, March, April, and May.)
For now, bring it on, June.

Remember when summer used to be the dead zone for TV programming? Ha! Now it's the time when a young upstart like Paramount Network (R.I.P., Spike TV) can drop two swing-for-the-fences shows – one set in the modern Wild West, the other in swingin' Seventies SoCal – featuring glossy production values and brand-name stars. Also on deck: Cinemax has a new J.K. Rowling import (non-Potter division) from the BBC; Freeform joins the Marvel Universe; and that mystery entity known as the Audience Network delivers a new take on a classic post-Nixon thriller.

Deep inside a brick-walled soundstage on a chilly March day in Queens, Marti Noxon is starting a revolution.
The veteran showrunner-director is hip-deep in filming the finale of her new AMC drama “Dietland,” one of two high-profile series Noxon is shepherding this year, along with HBO’s Amy Adams-starrer “Sharp Objects.”
Based on the 2015 novel by Sarai Walker, “Dietland” is a satirical call to arms, as inventive and out there as it is provocative and irreverent. It turns on issues of female empowerment, body-image concerns, rape culture and the rising level of organization as women demand equity in boardrooms and bedrooms. These topics have been in the headlines for months, although not nearly so much when Noxon first chased after the book rights two years ago.

Dietland is many things. The new AMC series is Joy Nash's first starring role. It's Julianna Margulies' return to TV, her first series since The Good Wife ended in 2016. It's also incredibly timely. "Most stories about fat people are a transformation story where they end up thin," Nash says in the video above. "And Dietland is not. Dietland is a different story. Your life can change and your body can stay the same, which is so exciting and true." Based on the novel by Sarai Walker the new series was developed for TV by Marti Noxon of Mad Men and Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame. AMC has ordered Unapologetic with Aisha Tyler, a companion talk show to its upcoming series Dietland set for premiere next month. Produced by Embassy Row, the unscripted series hosted by Tyler will air on Monday, June 4 at 11 Pm after two back-to-back episodes of Dietland, and will then move to its regular weekly timeslot of 10 pm Et the following week.
Unlike a conventional after show confined to the companion series itself, AMC says Unapologetic will feature Tyler leading a topical discussion around the broader, female-centric issues and themes that Dietland explores. She’ll talk with celebrity fans, series actors and producers, as well as relevant journalists, writers and comedians. Embassy Row’s Michael Davies and Amanda McPhillips serve as executive producers.

AMC has given a greenlight to a live talk show hosted by Aisha Tyler to air as a companion series to the new drama “Dietland,” starring Joy Nash and Julianna Margulies.
“Unapologetic with Aisha Tyler” aims to put the spotlight on female empowerment, gender issues, body-image concerns, and other themes raised by the scripted drama that is described as a feminist revenge fantasy. Shepherded by showrunner-director Marti Noxon, “Dietland” is based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Sarai Walker.
“Unapologetic” is a departure from the norm of AMC’s after-shows in that its focus will extend beyond the content of its companion drama. AMC has its “Talking Dead” franchise that drills down into episodes of “The Walking Dead” and “Fear the Walking Dead” and “Talking Preacher” that pairs with “Preacher.”

From Marti Noxon and starring Joy Nash and Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winner Julianna Margulies, Dietland is a wickedly funny and extraordinarily timed satire about Plum Kettle (Nash), a ghost-writer for the editor of one of New York’s hottest fashion magazines. Struggling with self-image and fed up with how she’s treated by her boss and society, Plum sets out on a wildly complicated road to self-awakening. At the same time, everyone is buzzing over news reports about men, accused of sexual abuse and assault, who are disappearing and meeting untimely, violent deaths. Plum also finds herself in the middle of two warring factions—one sisterhood who may be responsible for the attacks on male harassers, and the other which preaches female empowerment. She straddles these two groups, trying to make sense of the changing world and her part in it.

Why does this trailer bring back memories of the wildly successful The Devil Wears Prada?
The trailer is filled with glorious fashion, but what really clinches everything is the introduction of the wonderfully talented Julianna Margulies as the fashion editor to fear, Kitty Montgomery.
If you are expecting Dietland to be a copy of The Devil Wears Prada, you will be sorely disappointed.
The series follows Plum Kettle, played beautifully by Joy Nash, who is the ghost writer for Kitty Montgomery. You didn't think Kitty was answering all those letters, right?

Of course this being AMC there is also a sinister plot taking place throughout the series -- men are turning up dead, and Plum finds herself at the center of said plot.
The question remains, how the heck does she get herself involved in such violent acts?...

Move over, Miranda Priestly! Julianna Margulies’ Kitty Montgomery is the new boss from Hell in the acid-tongued trailer for AMC’s Dietland.
UnREAL co-creator Marti Noxon’s satiric dramedy (premiering Monday, June 4, at 9/8c) revolves around Twin Peaks vet Joy Nash’s Plum Kettle, who by day answers letters to fashion-magazine editor and expert shade-thrower Kitty. And by night? Um, our dear Plum might have accidentally gotten herself mixed up with a group of women who are bringing to a violent end the lives of men accused of sexual abuse and assault.
In other words — Plum’s, to be specific — “This whole thing is psycho!

AMC has released the official trailer and key art, with tagline “Join The Revolution”, for Dietland, its timely dark comedic series starring Joy Nash and Julianna Margulies.
The 10-episode satire from Marti Noxon (UnReal) follows Plum Kettle (Nash), a ghost-writer for the editor of one of New York’s hottest fashion magazines.
