- She was awarded a 1996 honorary degree Doctor of Laws from Oxford Brookes University in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.
- She was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1982 Queen's Honours List for her services to Penal Reform before being awarded Life Peer (Lady/Baroness).
- She was Secretary General of Penal Reform International from 1977 to 1996. She is a member of the ASsociation for the Prevention of Torture in Geneva, Switzerland and the law advisory committee of the British Council.
