- René Burri was born on April 9, 1933 in Zurich, Switzerland. He was a director and cinematographer, known for Braccia si, uomini no (1970), The Magnum Eye: On the U.S. Nuclear Highway (1994) and Le Siècle de Cartier-Bresson (2012). He was married to Rosellina Bischof and Clotilde Blanc. He died on October 20, 2014 in Zurich, Switzerland.

- His career began at age 13 when he photographed then British Prime Minister Winston Churchill who was visiting Switzerland.
- In 1963 he went to Cuba, and took the now-famous photo of revolutionary Ernesto 'Che' Guevara smoking a cigar. He also photographed Fidel Castro, architect Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris, and Pablo Picasso.
- He joined the Magnum Photo agency in 1955. He was a regular contributor to publications such as Life, the New York Times, and Paris-Match.
- He studied at the Arts and Crafts School of Zurich, and worked as an assistant cameraman for Walt Disney films in Switzerland.
