ITV1's coverage of the Champions League final reached a peak of 14.6m viewers last night - an all-channel record for the year so far. The match, beginning at 7.45pm and culminating in a penalty shoot-out at 10.35pm, was watched by an average of 11.1m, or 46% of the viewing audience. Itv said the penalty shoot-out, in which Chelsea were ultimately defeated by Manchester United, was watched by more homes than any other five minutes of television in 2008. The average audience across the broadcaster's Champions League coverage this season was 6.2m - the largest since 2002-03. The success is down to the progress of English teams, four of which reached the quarter-finals and three the semis.
