Douglass K. Davies is a novelist, screenwriter, director/producer and former public relations executive from the United States. A native of coastal northern California, his work often reveals a love of the sea. Davies' fascination with language and the spoken word manifested early as a boy raised in the Redwoods of the rugged Monterey Bay Area of Northern California in Scotts Valley a few minutes from the west coast surfing capital of Santa Cruz. Winning awards in creative writing and group events in which he spun his yarns in front of dozens of students was the first indication of the power of story and its influence with audiences of any age or dimension. Family members recalled him coming home from school sick with a fever and writing until exhausted, because he wanted "to be somewhere else."
Of Welsh-German-Irish heritage his family originally hailing from Cardiff, Wales, Davies came from a family of three sons, an environment rich with literature, the arts and world history. Davies describes his father as an extremely well-read man, with a leather library collection and a lifelong interest in Thomas Jefferson and aviator, Charles Lindbergh. An avid real estate investor and stock speculator, to this day Davies states his father was his most formidable critic. His mother, a piano and voice teacher, filled the home with classical artists and the music of many genres and periods.
The reclusive world famous director Alfred Hitchcock, lived a couple of miles up the road from the family's five-acre estate and was often seen amicably cruising by in the rear seat of his limousine enjoying the virtual anonymity of the then unincorporated city of less than 10,000. Entertaining Hollywood's royalty from his vineyard estate, the likes of Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, Prince Rainier, Ingrid Bergman and many others drifted in and out of the director's estate like the wind, before the paparazzi and far from the glare and scrutiny of Hollywood.
Davies first feature screenplay was written while a firefighter in between fires and medical calls. His famous card table was affectionately called "the studio" by fellow firefighters with Decatur Fire & Rescue in Decatur, Alabama, who were often the first to read his creations. The screenplay was sold to producer David Olive of Olive's Film Productions in Madison, Alabama. Olive had just mortgaged his 350 acre farm to enter the Christian and family marketplace. Davies' first production was shot in 16MM film and launched with Davies' 96 page script--the true story of basketball Coach Bill Finley of Grace Baptist Schools in Decatur, Alabama. In competition with 43 films, Davies was awarded Best Screenplay in an international marketplace by the Christian Distributor's Association soon followed by several independent features, Twice Given, adapted from the novella of the same title, and Test of Faith based upon a true story.
Doug's brother, Geoffrey, a wireless communications engineer with Hewlett Packard, joined the effort as a Producer. Within a year, two of Warner Bros top directors of the period, British film director, Peter MacDonald (Rambo III) and Australian director, George Miller (The Man from Snowy River) had expressed interest in directing two of Davies' adventure scripts.
Davies' early penchant for working with actors and developing works tailored to develop careers and expand range was and remains of particular interest to him. Geoff operates a studio facility out of Austin, Texas with a new mixed-use development in the works near Scottsdale, AZ.
The brothers have developed a slate of pictures for broadcast television and theatrical exhibition. Current works in development are the high seas adventure, The Seafarer; the time travel romantic drama, The Crossing (in production), and Steinburg an international thriller adapted for television from his novel, Steinburg's Hollywood. Steinburg was first released in London, U.K. in 2016 with 16 one-hour episodes of radio programming with a new format that proved to be highly successful with audiences throughout Western Europe and North America. It will be rerun in June 2023 for 32 weeks. Production for a broadcast television Prequel to the novel is scheduled to commence in London and Phoenix, AZ in late May 2023.
