The star directs, writes, composes and acts in this beautifully shot and sombre film about an old-school hero in a 19th-century frontier community fraught with tragedy
This sinewy, sombre, handsomely crafted and beautifully shot western is Viggo Mortensen’s second feature as a director, an impressively authored movie in which Mortensen is also writer, composer and star. With almost anyone else that might be the recipe for narcissism, and yet the self-effacing and even reticent quality in Mortensen’s screen presence works against that danger. He is, however, certainly working within the traditional strong, silent template of the old-school western hero.
Holger Olsen (played by Mortensen) is a Danish immigrant to the United States of the 1860s, who finds himself in San Francisco – a carpenter, rough-hewn outdoorsman and military veteran. He finds himself meeting the frank, unabashed gaze of Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps) a French-Canadian woman of modest means but independent temperament,...

As revisionist westerns go, Viggo Mortensen’s The Dead Don’t Hurt is more contemplative than most. The film has its share of violence, brutality, and injustice, but its protagonists respond stoically to life’s misfortunes, where lust for revenge animates other heroes of the genre. And with a clearly defined focus on the lives of women and immigrants against the backdrop of the Civil War, Mortensen develops thematic material introduced in his directorial debut, 2020’s Falling, which pitted a relentlessly bigoted patriarch against his gay son.
The Dead Don’t Hurt also employs a fragmented timeline like the earlier film. In Falling, frequent flashbacks effectively rendered the confusion of the film’s dementia-suffering father. In The Dead Don’t Hurt, Mortensen has dialed back the aggressive cross-cutting in favor of a more straightforward editorial grammar. But the non-linear construction here serves both to generate dramatic irony and to ensure that the story...

Hulu will exclusively premiere The Killing Kind on Tuesday, May 14. The series is a six-episode adaptation of the thriller novel by acclaimed author Jane Casey.
Nobody understands the dark gap between justice and the law better than Ingrid Lewis. As a successful lawyer, Ingrid is used to dealing with tricky clients, but no one rivals John Webster.
Charming, good-looking, successful, and clever. Webster was accused of coercive control by an ex-girlfriend, and in court, Ingrid successfully defended him, winning the case.
Following the trial, Ingrid got close to Webster, too close, and when she tried to exit the relationship, he turned on her, and her world imploded. Now, just when she is rebuilding her life, he suddenly reappears and tells her that someone is out to kill her and only he can protect her.
Fueled by a need to find out the truth and locked in a game of ‘cat and mouse,...

The western genre has been so pervasive throughout the entire history of the movies, and it is hard to imagine doing anything in it that hasn’t already been done. Viggo Mortensen, in writing, directing, producing and co-starring in only his second film behind the camera (after 2020’s Falling) finds a moving, if tragic, love story to play against the stunning landscape of the circa-1860s West, and somehow it all feels new. John Ford and Howard Hawks would love this movie.
The Dead Don’t Hurt is a title that promises something else, but without giving away spoilers, it ultimately feels right for this story of Holder Olsen (Mortensen), a Danish immigrant who falls hard for Vivienne Le Coudy (a luminous Vicky Krieps), who he meets in San Francisco. Wanting some quiet peace in his life, they move together to Elk Flats, Nevada, and start what appears to be an idyllic life together.

She’s been nominated for seven BAFTAs (winning one), seven Golden Globes (winning two), a couple of Oscars and an Emmy. She’s worked with armfuls of top directors including Steven Spielberg, Tim Burton and David Cronenberg. And 40 years ago, she created one of sitcom’s best-loved characters as the capricious Queen Elizabeth (Queenie to her pals) in Blackadder.
And now Miranda Richardson has proven herself so good she’s been cast not once but twice in Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens, first playing Madame Tracy in series one, and now taking on the tailor-made role of Shax, who becomes Hell’s representative on Earth after Crowley (David Tennant) gets fired.
What better time to revisit some of Miranda Richardson’s most memorable performances, from her impressive film debut in Dance With a Stranger to her more recent appearances in Harry Potter and Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None?...

In “A Child’s Question (July),” Pj Harvey sings in a jaunty rhythm, “Who’s inneath the Ooser-Rod?/Horny devil? Goaty God?”
The words sound playful as her guitar swells liquidly around her voice, and the couplet goes by so mellifluously, chased by whispers and chirping birds, that it’s easy go with the flow without wondering just what the heck an Ooser-Rod is. But when you look up the words’ meaning in Orlam — the novel in verse Harvey released last year, which she wrote in the dying (or maybe dead) dialect of the Dorset,...

"I'm going after the soldier that killed Carol." "The man you want is working for the police." Quiver Distr. has revealed an official trailer for Dead Shot, another new action thriller to enjoy. But this one finally has something unique to offer - it's set on the dark and paranoid streets of 1970's London, with some extra gritty chase scenes. Opening in the US on VOD in August. A retired Irish paramilitary witnesses the fatal shooting of his pregnant wife by an Sas officer. After outwitting the government, now wounded, and presumed dead, he escapes, taking his revenge to the streets. It looks like he catches up with the killer and might have a change of heart. "Raw and suspenseful, Dead Shot is an adrenaline-fueled thriller that will leave audiences weighing up the true cost of revenge." Just hope it's good. Starring Aml Ameen, Colin Morgan, Máiréad Tyers, Dara Devaney,...

A sense of yearning pervades Pj Harvey’s latest single, “I Inside the Old I Dying,” which will appear on her upcoming I Inside the Old Year Dying album, out July 7. She describes flora and fauna as “all waiting for His kingdom,” referencing someone named Wyman as she seems to become one with nature. “Slip from my childhood skin,” she sings before slipping into her native Dorset dialect, “I zing through the forest/I hover in the holway/and laugh into the leaves.” (Last year, Harvey released the book Orlam,...

Dead Shot is a film directed by Charles and Thomas Guard. It stars Colin Morgan and Aml Ameen and features the always grateful presence of Mark Strong.
A film that takes itself quite seriously in a revenge romp with political undertones in Ireland.
Dead Shot Storyline
In the 1970s, a member of the Ira takes over an Active Service Unit in London after his wife is accidentally shot dead in Ireland. The unit’s mission is to cause chaos and destruction, while his personal aim is to hunt down his wife’s killer — an Sas captain, who is also hunting him.
Movie Review
A good opportunity to revisit the thriller genre with a well-constructed cinematic flavor and with intention, characters and a whole story to tell. It has a lot of style thanks to the setting and the climate of instability in which the plot is framed.

The UK owes many of its proudest creations to other countries. Our national dish is chicken tikka masala, the Romans gave us everything from plumbing to underfloor heating, and let’s not even get started on the Royal family.
So it should come as no surprise that some top UK TV shows are based on original series from around the world. Some of these are obvious, like Drag Race UK and Law & Order being imported from the US, or The Masked Singer originating in South Korea, but some UK remakes are less up front about their international origins.
Hullraisers
Lucy Beaumont developed this Hull-based sitcom about the lives of three hilarious, bawdy and chaotic women, which debuted on Channel 4 in spring 2022 and has already been commissioned for a second series. But despite being a gorgeous and all-too-rare depiction of working-class British wit, Hullraisers is actually based on an Israeli sitcom called Little Mom,...

Neil Forsyth’s The Gold is a true crime drama with a distinctive perspective. As much as it’s about the cat-and-mouse chase between the robbers of £26 million’s worth of gold bullion in November 1983, and the special task force trying to catch them, it’s also about the British class system. Over six episodes (airing weekly on BBC One and available as a box-set on BBC iPlayer), Forsyth tells a story about villains on both sides of the social divide and the entrenched systems protecting those at the top. His London is just as veined with establishment corruption, freemasonry and snobbery as it is with armed robbers, hooky fences and locals who keep their mouths shut for fear of reprisal.
The ensemble drama covers the period from the 1983 robbery, then the largest gold heist in British history, to the investigation and sentencing of select ring leaders. The story, as the newspapers show,...

Empress Elisabeth of Austria, a starlet of 19th-century Europe, refused to have her photograph taken after she reached her mid-thirties. It’s a detail that hasn’t been copied over to Corsage, Marie Kreutzer’s tastefully anachronistic film about the Hapsburg royal. But that absence of photos as Elisabeth aged remains central to Kreutzer’s vision. Elizabeth believed beauty was her only currency, and she would do anything to preserve it. That includes, most infamously, a tightly corseted waist that measured a mere 19.5 inches.
We’ve seen many onscreen Elisabeths before. Romy Schneider, in the Fifties, starred in a television trilogy that reimagined her life as a bouncy, sweet-souled fairytale. It soon became a Christmas staple in Germany and Austria. Netflix only recently debuted its more feminist-minded take, The Empress, starring Devrim Lingnau. Many depictions offer ample time to the controversy that rocked Elisabeth’s later years when her son,...

This review originally ran May 20, 2022, in conjunction with the film’s world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Marie Kreutzer’s “Corsage” is a fanciful art-house study of a royal, valued for her beauty and style, who realizes that she needs to escape from her unfaithful husband and her rigidly ritualized existence. It’s tempting, then, to call it “Spencer” for Grown-Ups.
Empress Elisabeth of Austria, played by Vicky Krieps, may not have the mainstream appeal of Kristen Stewart’s Princess Diana, and there is no equivalent of “The Crown” to get audiences up to speed on 19th century Austro-Hungarian politics.
But the films have a lot in common, and “Corsage,” which premiered in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival, deserves at least as many plaudits. It’s certainly the more intelligent. haunting and waspishly funny of the two films.

“Our most important point was to show this woman for who she was and give a woman a voice, representing thousands of women who need a voice,” declares Vicky Krieps about the underlying themes about a woman’s agency and self-determination in the acclaimed period drama “Corsage.” For our recent webchat she adds about the film’s modern take on a centuries-old story, “we use it as a fairy-tale to talk about something, to show something that so many women feel,” she says. “I misbehaved as an actor, she’s misbehaving as a director and I think both of us being women, we were tired of behaving, tired of explaining our misbehaving. We just wanted to misbehave ‘because,’ create a character that is difficult ‘because,’ it is complex ‘because,’ because we all are these people. We, not one of us, is just one thing. It’s just that I didn’t want it to be a classic period film,” reveals Austrian filmmaker Marie Kreutzer about her latest labor of love, the period drama “Corsage,” which boldly weaves the late 1800s with contemporary touches. In some inescapable ways, James Corden and “Mammals” are made for each other. As a six-episode series, the new Prime Video show is the perfect length for someone taking the offramp from the late night TV freeway, as Corden will do when he exits “The Late Late Show” sometime next year. From a performance standpoint, this Jez Butterworth-written half-hour dramedy gives Corden the chance to step outside the Stage-to-Screen Adaptation Industrial Complex and originate a role of his own.
On paper, even the premise seems perfect for someone looking to move on from an eight-and-a-half year stint playing virality-optimized affability. Here, Corden is Jamie, an acclaimed chef trying to juggle a cratering marriage, a soon-to-open restaurant, and an amateur investigation into the identity of the man who may have thrown a wrench in both. This is not a show built on pleasant, carefree vibes. It’s a sprinkling of...

Watching the new Amazon Prime series Mammals, I was reminded of an unsettling – and maybe even apocryphal – Margaret Atwood anecdote. When the author of The Handmaid’s Tale asked a male friend why men fear women, she was told that men are afraid that women will laugh at them. When she asked women what they feared in men, they told her they were afraid of being killed.
In Jez Butterworth’s surreal and funny miniseries on love and infidelity, James Corden – in an unfortunate callback to his recent tabloid troubles with a New York City brasserie – plays Jamie, an ambitious London chef about to open his dream restaurant. He and his wife, Amandine (Melia Kreiling), are on a babymoon to Cornwall when a series of notable events occur almost at once: the cottage next door is revealed to be occupied by Tom Jones (the real one), a majestic whale breaches the blue-black sea,...

"A lion doesn't lose sleep over the opinion of sheep." Picturehouse in the UK has revealed another trailer for the indie Austrian drama Corsage, from award-winning Austrian filmmaker Marie Kreutzer. This one is opening in both the US and the UK at the end of December right around the holidays, playing exclusively in art house theaters. It's also Austria's submission to the Academy Awards this year. Empress Elisabeth of Austria, referred to as "Empress Sisi", is best known for her beauty and fashion trends. But in 1877, she celebrates her 40th birthday and must fight to maintain her public image. With a future of only ceremonial duties in front of her, she rebels against her public image and comes up with a plan to protect her legacy. Vicky Krieps stars as Elisabeth in the film, along with Florian Teichtmeister, Jeanne Werner, Alma Hasan, Finnegan, and Colin Morgan. Not one of our favorite films this year,...

So maybe this isn’t exactly the ideal moment to be releasing a TV series in which James Corden plays a seemingly nice guy who turns out to be prone to impatience and irritation. That the series, Amazon’s Mammals, also has a restaurant backdrop is a particularly poisonous version of serendipity.
It muddles one’s ability to make an assessment as ostensibly non-controversial as saying that Corden is actually really good in Mammals. I mean, before he was doing karaoke with celebrities in a trailer-pulled car or publicly smooching disgraced former White House press secretaries, Corden was a Tony-winning actor. I can still easily imagine people complaining that Corden’s performance in Mammals is annoying, or they can’t view his character as anything other than annoying, as if that’s not the intended nature of the character he’s playing.

Prime Video is all set to premiere its much-awaited UK Original series ‘Mammals’ worldwide on November 11. The dark comedy-drama series stars comic-actor James Corden in the lead. He plays Jamie, a chef, who finds out that his wife Amandine (Melia Kreiling) is cheating on him. While fans are excited to see him in a serious role after ‘The Wrong Mans’, speculations of his character being inspired by real-life chef Jamie Oliver have become the talk of the town.
However, recently James Corden squashed all comparisons and said that Jamie Oliver is not the inspiration for the series. “Jamie Oliver was absolutely not the inspiration for Mammals,” Corden remarked. The British chef is popular for riding motorized wheels, and the series shows Corden riding a scooter. Addressing parallels between the two, Corden affirmed, “Jamie Oliver was on a moped.”

"Monogamy, it's a beautiful idea but… you have to admit it's pretty hard – right?"
