One of Tim Burton's first professional gigs after his stint at the California Institute of Arts was working as an animator, storyboard artist, and graphic designer at Disney. Burton was born and raised in Burbank, California, which is where Disney's offices are located, so he more or less grew up in the company's shadow. He worked at the Mouse House for a few years in the early '80s, working on films like "The Fox and the Hound," "Tron," and "The Black Cauldron." It should be noted that this was a notoriously bad time for Disney, and the financial failure of the ultra-ambitious and very expensive "Cauldron" (it cost $44 million) led to an open conversation about Disney shutting down its animation department.
Of course, while Disney was floundering financially, they were freer to experiment artistically. I maintain that Disney's most interesting movies came at a time when their kiddie-flick successes didn't define them.

The last film Tim Burton directed, 2019's live-action "Dumbo" remake, became something of an accidental metaphor for his career. For its first half, the movie sticks fairly close to Disney's original 1941 animated feature, as the titular elephant with unusually large ears is abused and treated with disdain by the customers at the traveling circus where he resides. When Dumbo's newfound ability to fly makes him the show's star attraction (the point at which the animated film ends), he and his fellow performers are recruited by a greedy and unscrupulous businessman (Michael Keaton) who exploits them at his gaudy amusement park. It's up to Dumbo and his pals to escape the park in search of greener pastures.
It's not a one-to-one analogy, but you can see why, upon reflection, Burton said Disney was a "horrible big circus" and he was its Dumbo. After decades of collaborating, the once visionary filmmaker...

Good news, everyone! The not-highly anticipated update to the Storybook Circus area, Smellephants on Parade, has started to take shape. A Smellephant has arrived.
If you don’t know what Smellephants are, you were blessed. But now I have to ruin your bliss by explaining.
“Smellephants on Parade” is one of Disney’s latest brain farts where they can try to pretend like they are adding new attractions while doing something lame and cheap. Basically, they wanted a sponsored attraction for Scentsy and decided this was the way to go.
Then, they will tell the media and investors that they are bringing new attractions to compete with Universal Orlando’s upcoming Epic Universe.
This time, they are adding pink elephants to the Storybook Circus area of the Magic Kingdom. However, now they will eject smells like popcorn. If you want to smell actual pink elephants you need to go to...

Come on, Barbie, let’s go party at my house when Greta Gerwig’s Barbie comes to 4K HD, Blu-ray, and DVD later this month! The physical release of 2023’s highest-grossing film hits shelves and online retailers on October 17, bringing laughter, existential crisis, and harsh lessons about social constructs to your living room!
Barbie converted the summer into a dance party when the musical comedy turned most theater tickets pink, earning $1.4B worldwide! The film presents the iconic blonde bombshell in ways we’ve never seen while taking Mattel to task for decades of questionable motivation concerning its portrayal of “toys for girls.” To Mattel’s credit, the legendary toy company leans into Gerwig and Noah Baumbach’s biting script, giving the Hollywood couple plenty of room to play in Barbie Land. Barbie is a unique film experience worth watching, and you can pre-order a copy of the film by clicking this link.

Aside from the story or dazzling animation, music is often what we take away the most from Walt Disney Animation films. In this case, we're focusing on the music accompanied by words, not just the compositional score. The songs are frequently the heart and soul of the movie, bringing to life the characters' emotions and motivations and moving the plot forward through lively melodies and lyrics.
Music also establishes a particular style and atmosphere that is reinforced by the visual aesthetic. It's difficult to imagine the idiosyncratic humor of"Hercules" without the muses' Gospel anthems, or "Lilo & Stitch" without Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu's breezy vocals that immediately transport you to the Hawaiian setting.
The songs are either part of the diegetic story, meaning they are sung and heard by the characters, or a non-diegetic part of the soundtrack, outside the world of the narrative and overlaying the on-screen action. But...

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie might as well wear the Infinity Gauntlet because the pink-powered meta-comedy has defeated Avengers: Endgame as the best-selling movie ever at Alamo Drafthouse. The theater chain isn’t keen on releasing ticket sale totals for either film. However, Barbie is sitting pretty at the box office, with $596 million in North America and $1.343 billion worldwide. For those who want to compare, Avengers: Endgame snapped up $858 million in North America and $2.799 billion globally. While Barbie is bigger than Endgame at Alamo Drafthouse, the Marvel event film is still the second-biggest movie in history behind James Cameron’s Avatar.
A portion of Barbie’s popularity at Alamo Drafthouse could point toward the theater chain’s merchandise push, with Drafthouse cinemas offering limited edition items to guests, including lunch boxes, t-shirts, and sunglasses. Alamo Drafthouse says Barbie is responsible for selling more merch than any other film hosted by the boutique theater.

C’mon, Barbie! Let’s go party! Greta Gerwig’s existential comedy Barbie is making history after becoming the highest-grossing Warner Bros. film at the global box office! Say farewell to the top spot, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. There’s a new champion at the pinnacle of the chart!
Today’s news is another win for Barbie after the film inspired by the classic toy line surpassed Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight as WB’s biggest movie in the studio’s history in North America. Before leaving Batman in the dust, Barbie pounced on Illumination and Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, becoming the top-grossing title of 2023 in North America. If Barbie remains on track – and there’s no reason to think it won’t – it could become the world’s top-earning film of the year. With enough time, Barbie could overtake Disney’s...

The hottest film event of the summer is fast approaching! That’s right, folks! Two film industry titans, Barbie and Oppenheimer, will soon battle it out for box office supremacy! Before you bet on who wins the top spot on the charts, see what analysts predict for the July 21-23 weekend.
Tracking for both films is interesting, to say the least. Great Gerwig‘s Barbie could open to a peppy $70 million-$80 million, with an opportunity to make more. Warner Bros, who’s licking its wounds after The Flash underperformed, is holding out for $60M, just to be cautious.
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie introduces several Barbie and Ken variants, each with a different personality, background, and status in a bizarre world of partying, shopping, beachside brawls, and feeble attempts at flirtation. The footage piles on the strange as Barbie and Ken seemingly travel to the real world, where everything becomes more unhinged than it was before.

The trailer provides a glimpse of what’s in store once the dolls leave their perfect world and discover what it’s like to live in the real world. Cue an full-on existential crisis.

To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in an ideal place unless you have a full-on existential crisis. In today’s new Barbie trailer, Margot Robbie’s blonde bombshell questions death, the limits of her world, and whether or not to red pill her way into a world where she’s nothing more than a child’s plaything. It’s clear that the film’s director, Greta Gerwig, is delivering something unexpected with the new Barbie movie, and I could not be more excited!

Until now, Barbie has lived in a land of non-stop beach parties, shopping sprees at the mall, and a will-they/won’t-they relationship with Ken. Paul McCartney has been a longtime activist for animal rights. He is a well-known vegetarian and frequently tries to teach people about the benefits of not eating meat. While he became a vegetarian with his first wife, Linda, another inspiration for his love of animals came from Disney, who taught him some important life lessons.

Growing up in Liverpool, Paul McCartney ate meat frequently, as it was challenging to eat a veggie diet then. His first brush with vegetarianism came in 1968 during the Beatles’ trip to India. However, he didn’t commit to the lifestyle until the mid-1970s.
In an interview with The Guardian, McCartney shared when he became a vegetarian. He and Linda were eating meat when they looked out the window, saw a group of adorable lambs, and decided to stop devouring meat then and there.

Though it’s found itself in hot water of late, Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin reboot is the latest live-action feature to set up shop at Disney, where it joins the likes of Cruella, Dumbo, and The Lion King.
Dubbed a reimagining of the 1992 classic, Ritchie and his team have vowed to deliver a modern-day yarn that is both nuanced and faithful to the beloved original, which was anchored by a memorable performance from the late, great Robin Williams.
In his stead, Will Smith (Suicide Squad) will take over the role of the gregarious Genie, and we’re now learning that Aladdin will present a deep dive into all of the characters we know and love. At least, that’s according to Navid Negahban, who is poised to play the part of Jasmine’s father (Aka The Sultan) in the 2019 redo:
My name is ‘Singbad the Sailor’ so this is my name.
