Indo-Canadian composer Vikas Kohli of FatLabs has two films gearing up for the festival circuit. Kohli wrote the score for Samuel Kiehoon's short film "Rattan," an homage to B-movies in which a bicycle basket anthropomorphizes into a possessed murderer. He also composed the music for Michelle Latimer's Toronto-based rapper documentary "Alias." "Rattan," which already picked up an award at the WorldFest Houston International Film Festival earlier this year, will screen in the short film program at Cannes this year. "Alias" will have its world premiere at the Toronto film Festival Hot Docs this Friday, April 26. "Writing the music for 'Rattan' was really fun because we wanted to pay homage to classic horror movies without actually making the music cheesy and over-the-top," said Kohli, who has previously scored a number of short films. "Scoring for 'Alias' was different than any other project I worked on. From the outset,...

Seems as if the Bollywood Monster Mashup was again the place to be in Toronto. Preliminary estimates are that 15,000 people danced into a frenzy at the 2nd annual Bollywood Monster Mashup evening concert on Saturday, July 28th at Mississauga Celebration Square.
“I can’t believe the number of messages we’re getting over email, Twitter and Facebook from people telling us how much fun they had. The best part is that we’re getting thanked for throwing a huge party that ended with a Bollywood mosh-pit!” says music composer and show producer Vikas Kohli of FatLabs; adding, “We got away with creating some crazy and indulgent interpretations of Bollywood and we’re stoked that the audience loved dancing and singing along to every minute of it. I owe a lot of thanks to the unbelievably talented performers, the doggedly hard working team, our sponsors and community partners.”

Toronto, Aug 13: The fusion of Bollywood and Canadian music is set to create a new genre of music, according to famous Indo-Canadian music producer Vikas Kohli whose concert at the Iifa Awards here drew over 10,000 people.
The award-winning composer, who produced the famous song 'Apun Ke Saath' in Bollywood film 'Mission Istaanbul,' is busy experimenting on this new hybrid genre of music in his FatLabs studio in the Toronto suburb of Mississauga.
"Just like we had the ska fusion (mix of reggae and punk) 50 years ago, and the bhangra fusion 20 years ago that resulted from the interaction.
