- Had four brothers and two sisters.
- Ran in the inaugural 1970 New York City Marathon; he finished 45th out of 55 finalists with a running time of four hours, twelve minutes, and nine seconds.
- In 1991 Lebow established Fred's Friends as the first official charity of the New York City Marathon; this program uses marathon runners to raise money for cancer research. Moreover, in 1995 the non-profit organization Fred's Team was established in honor of Lebow. Every year athletes of varying abilities join Fred's Team to participate in all kinds of athletic events such as marathons, mini-marathons, bike races, and triathlons in order to raise money to finance pioneering research at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
- Lebow's memorial service at the finish line for the New York City Marathon attracted a crowd of 3,000 mourners. This was the largest memorial gathering in Central Park since the death of John Lennon.
