- Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame - Builders category. (2018)
- Starting with the 2017-18 season, the NHL has presented the Willie O'Ree Community Hero Award in his honor. It is given "to an individual who - through the game of hockey - has positively impacted his or her community, culture or society." Beginning with the 2022-23 season, two awards have been given, one in Canada and one in the USA.
- Pictured on a permanent-rate Canadian commemorative postage stamp, issued 30 October 2023. Price on day of issue was 92¢.
- Inducted into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.
