Exclusive: Lionsgate is pushing the theatrical releases of this August’s White Bird: A Wonder Story and next year’s Dirty Dancing sequel from director Jonathan Levine due to the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike, we hear.
White Bird, the spin-off prequel to the studio’s 2017 box office smash Wonder, was set to launch limited on Aug. 18 and go wider on Aug. 25. It’s now undated for Q4 at the end of this year. That leaves the last weekend in August without a wide theatrical release, which isn’t that unusual for that point in summer. White Bird stars Helen Mirren and Gillian Anderson, and it’s the type of movie that really needs the push from its actors to raise it above the fray. Now it’s in the Oscar season corridor, which is a better spot than the dog days of August. Best to wait the strike out.

Lionsgate announced this afternoon that their Dirty Dancing sequel starring Jennifer Grey will hit theaters on Feb. 9, 2024.
Deadline first reported about the project, which Jonathan Levine is directing off a screenplay by Elizabeth Chomko, Jonathan Levine, Mikki Daughtry, Tobias Iaconis. In part 2, Baby (Grey) takes us back to Kellerman’s Resort for a story of summer, young romance, and dancing. That weekend is the pre-Valentine’s Day weekend and right now Universal has an untitled animation film on the calendar.
In addition, Lionsgate’s feature take of Judy Blume’s 1970 novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret will now open April 28, 2023 instead of Sept. 16 this year. Universal recently moved DreamWorks’ Distant off that date to Jan. 27, 2023. While I hear Lionsgate likes the new pre-summer date for the Judy Blume movie, I’m wondering now if New Line’s feature take of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot in the previous Sept.

White’s book harkens back to classic ‘80s fantasy and horror like “Labyrinth.” The film features a screenplay from Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis; both Daughtry and Iaconis are well aware of genre content, having worked on 2019’s “The Curse of La Llorona.”

'Dirty Dancing' sequel is moving forward without Johnny Castle, the character originally played by the late Patrick Swayze.
In August, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer surprised fans of the film by reportedly confirming that a follow-up to the 1987 cult-classic was on the way, with Jennifer Grey reprising her role as Frances 'Baby' Houseman as well as serving as an executive producer, reports NME.
In an interview with People Grey, 60, has now revealed that the film will not recast Patrick Swayze’s character and instead will go in a different direction to its beloved predecessor.
Swayze, who played Baby’s love interest in the original film, sadly passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2009.
“All I can say is there is no replacing anyone who’s passed… you never try to repeat anything that’s magic like that. You just go for something different,” she said.

A new “Dirty Dancing” movie is in the works at Lionsgate that will bring back the 1987 original’s star Jennifer Grey to both star and executive produce and that will be directed by Jonathan Levine, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer announced on its earnings call Thursday.
The studio also announced that a fifth “John Wick” movie, this one arriving after the planned “John Wick 4,” will hit theaters in 2022. The studio plans to shoot both movies in the action franchise back to back as soon as star Keanu Reeves becomes available.
Rumors of a “Dirty Dancing” remake or reboot have been circulating for some time, even without the late Patrick Swayze returning. And ABC did a TV movie update on the story back in 2017 starring Abigail Breslin, Sarah Hyland and Colt Prattes.

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed what we first told you back in mid-July, in what he billed as “one of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood”: Jennifer Grey is starring and executive producing a new Dirty Dancing movie at the mini-major.
Warm Bodies director Jonathan Levine is shepherding the project with Gillian Bohrer from a screenplay by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis.
The first Dirty Dancing movie was released in 1987 by Vestron and grossed $218 million at the global box office off a $5M production cost. The pic won an Oscar and Golden Globe for the original song “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” by Frank Previte, John DeNicola and Donald Markowitz. At the Globes, Dirty Dancing was nominated in the comedy/musical category with nods for Patrick Swayze as comedy/musical actor and as well as Grey in the best actress category.

There may be another “Dirty Dancing” movie in the works.
Original star Jennifer Grey is collaborating with Lionsgate on an untitled dance movie in which she will star and executive produce.
The studio refuses to comment on whether the project, set in the 1990s, will bring back Grey’s Frances “Baby” Houseman character. “Dirty Dancing” starred Patrick Swayze as Grey’s dance instructor and romantic interest, along with Jerry Orbach and Kelly Bishop as Grey’s parents. The original film was set in 1963 at a Catskills resort.
Megamix’s Jonathan Levine and Gillian Bohrer are shepherding the untitled project with a screenplay by the team of Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis, whose credits include “Five Feet Apart” and “The Curse of La Llorona.”

When I was about eight years old, my little sister and I developed a habit of sneaking out of our bedroom in the middle of the night to go watch TV in the living room. We weren’t the most stealthy kids, so obviously we were caught a few times. The last time we snuck out, it was our grandmother who found us watching Looney Tunes in the middle of the night, and as she yelled at us in Spanish, told us that if we continued to misbehave, La Llorona would come to snatch us both, and take us to be with her forever, because she looked for little kids who didn’t listen to their parents.
For many nights after, my sister and I laid still, staring at every shadow, jumping at every tiny sound, and wondering if La Llorona would get us if we dared get out of our beds.

There’s a lot of box-office heat on horror these days — Jordan Peele’s Us has already grossed $236 million worldwide. Still, that’s no excuse for a lazy cash-in like The Curse of La Llorona, which plays too timid for terror and is too lazily constructed to haunt anyone’s dreams. This missed-opportunity of a film is based on the Mexican legend of La Llorona, a.k.a. the Weeping Woman. La Llorona. The Weeping Woman. A horrifying apparition, caught between Heaven and Hell, trapped in a terrible fate sealed by her own hand. The mere mention of her name has struck terror around the world for generations.
In life, she drowned her children in a jealous rage, throwing herself in the churning river after them as she wept in pain.
Now her tears are eternal. They are lethal, and those who hear her death call in the night are doomed. La Llorona creeps in the shadows and preys on the children, desperate to replace her own. As the centuries have passed, her desire has grown more voracious … and her methods more terrifying.
In 1970s Los Angeles, La Llorona is stalking the night—and the children.
Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm.

In Justin Baldoni’s “Sick-Lit” inspired new film Five Feet Apart, Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse (Riverdale) star as two teenagers suffering from Cystic-Fibrosis who fall madly in love despite never being able to come closer than, you’ve guessed it, five feet within one another. Written by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis, the film presents a jarringly formulaic plot which will require a fair amount of suspension of disbelieve to even contemplate going with it.
Stella (Richardson) likes to be in control, having lived with Cystic-Fibrosis, a disease which has been slowly destroying her lungs since childhood, the teenager has learnt that discipline and doing what the doctors have ordered is the only way she can survive long enough until a lung donor comes along. When she is hospitalised for the umpteenth time to help her get ever a recent bout of illness, Stella meets Will (Sprouse), the...

I’ve actually wondered if the upcoming James Wan-produced horror film The Curse of La Llorona was connected to The Conjuring universe. I figured that the movie would be its own thing, but it looks like I figured wrong.
The Curse of La Llorona premiered recently at SXSW, and it sounds like Tony Amendola’s Father Perez officially crosses over from The Conjuring universe. This character initially appeared in the first Conjuring spinoff film Annabelle.
Bloody Disgusting went ahead and confirmed that this is indeed the same character. They explain in their review how the character fits in:
But this is a Conjuring universe film through and through, which means there’s a familiarity to the scares and formula. It also means a tenuous and not so necessary connection between the films. Remember Father Perez (Tony Amendola) from Annabelle? If you don’t, that’s ok. This film works hard to remind you,...

Justin Baldoni’s Five Feet Apart, on the surface, is your casual generic and conventional teen drama that evokes a similar sense of “impending doomed romance” that plays with every cliché it can. However, while undoubtedly Five Feet Apart is your bona fide Romeo + Juliet meets John Green’s Fault in Our Stars, it is convicted in an emotionally compelling and deeply poignant prowess with two fantastic lead performances from Cole Sprouse and Haley Lu Richardson.
Sprouse, in particular, impresses dearly. His first feature starring role in eight years, with his last appearance with his twin sibling Dylan Sprouse in the famed Disney Channel sequel show The Suite Life on Deck in 2011. However, Sprouse has been heavily active in...

The Curse of La Llorona isn’t Annabelle unwatchable, but it’s certainly no The Conjuring rebirth. Michael Chaves’ ritualistic Conjurverse spinoff lays standard haunted house blueprints but doesn’t execute plans with particular enthusiasm or distinct characteristics. “La Llorona” herself evokes such richness in Latin American darkness and fabled maternal horrors, but none of that translates in this blandly monotone pastiche of basic scares that Wan’s lens has before presented with more paranormal viciousness. Chaves executes from Curse A to Banishment B, just without the particularly descript terrorization that’s elevated horror cinema’s best efforts as of late.
Linda Cardellini stars as social worker Anna Tate-Garcia, a single mother who unwittingly introduces her children to an evil ghost after handling Patricia Alvarez’s (Patricia Velasquez) tragic case. “La Llorona” (Marisol Ramirez) hopes to steal Anna’s children and drown them, but the strong-willed widow won’t submit without a fight.

The second frame of Disney-Marvel’s latest MCU installment, 'Captain Marvel,' is set to top the box office with an estimated $70 million.
The superhero film already pushed past the $200 million mark domestically after taking in $19 million on Friday for a total of about $215 million. It’s also generated $378 million overseas after jolting the domestic box office out of a slump that had seen it down 27% from last year.
“Captain Marvel’s” second weekend will mark the second-highest in March box office history with “Beauty and the Beast” having taken in $90 million in its second frame in 2017. “Captain Marvel’s” weekend take will mark a 54% drop from its debut.
Paramount’s animated adventure film “Wonder Park” should drop into second place with about $17 million from 3,838 North American locations, while CBS Films and Lionsgate’s “Five Feet Apart” is estimated to bring in about $13 million from 2,803 domestic sites for third place.

Things go bump in the night — and, as an occasional change of pace, in the middle of the afternoon — with a frequency that will neither surprise nor disappoint genre fans throughout “The Curse of La Llorona,” an efficiently formulaic shocker inspired by the centuries-old Mexican legend of the titular bogeywoman. It’s set in Los Angeles during the early 1970s, for no readily apparent reason other than to justify the what-the-hell inclusion of Curtis Mayfield’s “Superfly” theme on the soundtrack. But its true location clearly is a distant corner of producer James Wan’s “The Conjuring” extended horror-movie universe, which gets a fleeting wink-wink hat-tip early on with a clever cameo appearance by Tony Amendola in his “Annabelle” role as Father Perez.
Linda Cardellini strikes a credible balance of maternal instincts and mortal terror as Anna Garcia, a social worker and widowed mom who suspects the worst when she...

As a kid, I had heard whispers of “The Weeping Woman” from some of my friends, but I didn’t learn more about the mythology surrounding this haunting and tragic figure until several years ago when Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights created an immersive and terrifying maze centered around the supernatural child snatcher who has spent the eternity of her afterlife grieving for her children, who were drowned after she went mad. Considering it’s a story that has been around for hundreds of years now, becoming a cautionary tale that parents have used as a means to keep their kids in line, this folklore has been ripe for a cinematic interpretation for quite some time now, and director Michael Chaves does an excellent job of tapping into just why generations of tots have grown up haunted by the fear of being taken away by “La Llorona” if they don...

A tearjerking romance centered around two teenagers living with cystic fibrosis, first-time feature director Justin Baldoni’s “Five Feet Apart” is ultimately little more than a cover band treatment of “The Fault in Our Stars.” But as far as cover bands go, at least it has a hell of a frontwoman in Haley Lu Richardson. Fresh off of memorable supporting parts in “The Edge of Seventeen” and “Support the Girls,” Richardson gives a star turn every bit as charismatic and assured as the film is formulaic and forgettable, bringing soul, style and nuance to a character that could have easily been a condescending caricature.
An exceptional talent in a sea of well-meaning adequacy, Richardson plays Stella, a bright, wryly optimistic high schooler who has been dealing with cystic fibrosis since childhood. When we meet her, she’s just landed in the hospital for yet another extended stay, and wastes no...

The latest entry in the terminal-illness teen romance canon — shockingly, not based on a Ya novel, although the screenplay became the basis for a novelization — “Five Feet Apart” is like a new strand of the same formulaic disease, only this time featuring a set of specific symptoms that make physical contact between the sick lovers literally fatal. (Call it “The Fault in Our Lungs.”)
Within this sub-genre of doomed adolescent relationships, “Five Feet Apart” is more John Green-generic than “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”-clever. What “Five Feet Apart” — the directorial debut of “Jane the Virgin” actor Justin Baldoni, from a screenplay by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis — has going for it is how it uses the mechanics of the condition at its center as the basis for the plot, which saves it from being a copy-paste refurbishing of other, similar entries.

It’s almost irrelevant that Justin Baldoni’s “Five Feet Apart” is atypically urgent for a Ya-flavored romantic drama about the impossible love between two star-crossed teenagers. Or that Haley Lu Richardson manages to pump some blood into even the most contrived moments of Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis’ script, reaffirming the “Columbus” and “Support the Girls” actress as a generational talent on the rise. It doesn’t really matter that the movie uses emotionally pornographic M83 songs and The Postal Service covers to pave over its bumpy stretches, or even that its climactic swing for the fences is an exhausting whiff at the end of a film that just needed to get the ball in play.
What’s important about “Five Feet Apart” is that it’s the first widely accessible Hollywood movie ever made about cystic fibrosis, and that it’s good enough to guarantee at least small...

With a $153 million opening domestically and $455 million worldwide, “Captain Marvel” is certain to be one of the fastest films to gross $1 billion at the box office. But exactly how fast will depend on whether it can hold as well in its second weekend as inclusive superhero films like “Wonder Woman” and “Black Panther.”
While both of those films had very different openings than “Captain Marvel” — “Wonder Woman” opened to $103 million while “Black Panther” opened to $202 million — both notably kept their second weekend drop-offs below 50 percent. Strong word of mouth, combined with the cultural weight those films had, resulting in Marvel and DC fans returning to theaters to see again and again, making them both huge hits.

The first trailer for Michael Chaves’ directorial debut, “The Curse of La Llorona,” has dropped — and it’s terrifying.
The trailer starts with a sort of ceremony where sage is burned around a woman. Linda Cardellini’s character interrupts the ceremony, and later in the night, she witnesses a crime scene that has taken the lives of many. The same woman from earlier tells her, “It’s your fault! I tried to stop her!”
La Llorona, or The Weeping Woman, is an apparition caught between Heaven and Hell after she drowned her children and threw herself into a river and wept in pain. Now, her tears are forever, which is how she got her name. And in “The Curse of La Llorona,” she haunts the night and the children in 1970s Los Angeles.

Now, her tears are forever, which is how she got her name. And in “The Curse of La Llorona,” she haunts the night and the children in 1970s Los Angeles.

New Line Cinema has released a trailer and poster for their upcoming James Wan-produced horror film The Curse of La Llorona. As you will see, this film has a very creepy vibe that is probably going to scare the crap out of a lot of people.
The movie is based on the real-life Latinx folklore of the ghost of a weeping woman who terrorizes as she attempts to take children and scares the shit out of anyone who gets in her way. The trailer prominently features a scene where two kids are being terrorized by the ghost while in a car. We don’t normally see hauntings in cars, so I thought that was pretty cool.
The film stars Linda Cardellini (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Patricia Velasquez (The Mummy), Sean Patrick Thomas (Barbershop: Back in Business) and Raymond Cruz (Better Call Saul). The story is set in 1970s Los...

There are many urban legends and stories about ghosts, ghouls and supernatural beings from all cultures, but there is something extra terrifying about the Mexican fable of La Llorona (aka The Weeping Woman). As they say in the debut trailer for the New Line Cinema horror The Curse of La Llorona: “It’s a folktale…to some.”
During Comic-Con in July, New Line gave a generous preview of the horror pic during their ScareDiego event and the new trailer builds on the terror. The fable of La Llorona is about a horrifying apparition of a woman who is caught between heaven and hell. She sealed her own fate when she drowned her children in a jealous rage. After drowning her children, she threw herself in the river after them and wept in pain — now her tears are eternal (hence the name Weeping Woman). Now, she stalks the night looking...
