The top 20 finalists will compete in October for a whopping $50,000, one of the country’s largest cash prizes for a short film competition. “The Film Prize has claimed its place in the indie filmmaking world as one of its premier competitions,” said Executive Director Gregory Kallenberg in a statement. “We are incredibly excited about this year’s group of films and being able to show this work to our jury and the Film Prize audience.” Because the grand prize winner will be chosen based on the festival audience's votes as well as a jury of industry professionals, finalists are encouraged to increase their chances of winning by promoting their films...

The Hollywood of the South continues to lure talent and productions from across the country, as the 20 finalists for the Louisiana Film Prize Festival were announced in Shreveport, La. Now in its second year, the short narrative film festival has only one stipulation: the films must be shot in the Shreveport-Bossier area. This year’s finalists are given $500 and invited to screen their finished films at the festival weekend, held Oct. 4–6. Winners are selected by a panel of experts and celebrities, as well as audience vote (so it pays to have a film with a big, local cast). The winner will receive $50,000. Not bad for a short! “This was an amazing year for us,” Gregory Kallenberg, founder of the Louisiana Film Prize, said in a statement. “Filmmakers from all over the country came to northwest Louisiana and created incredible pieces of work. These men and women really took the Louisiana Film Prize to another level.

Lerner is the Chairman and co-founder of Nu Image, Inc., Millennium Films and all related companies. Last night Thom Powers screened two docs, Jessica Edwards‘ short, Seltzer Works and Gregory Kallenberg’s feature, Haynesville as the penultimate screening in his Spring Stranger Than Fiction series. The series rarely features shorts, but Powers credited the move to the fact that both films focused on gas crises – one very small, one very large, both man-made. Deftly shot, Seltzer Works is a carefully composed bit of nostalgia for a time when deliverymen schlepped heavy glass bottles full of fizzy water all over Brooklyn. A portrait of a third-generation seltzer man struggling to survive in a world that no longer needs him, Edwards treats her subject with dignity without lapsing into self-seriousness. Haynesville tells...

Check out the excerps below and click the links to see the full reviews. Check out Part 1 by clicking here. White Stripes Under Great White Northern Lights, The | Review "Under Great White Northern Lights is satisfying because it doesn’t go too deep into aimless conversations with the band, but instead focuses on the music, with excellent live footage that continues to hammer home the raw power that has made The White Stripes a power to be reckoned with. There are certainly poignant moments, with Jack and Meg discussing the idea behind the band, the apparent purposeful colors used from the outset, and their aversion to set lists. But overall, Malloy lets the music speak for the band." ____________________________________________________ Haynesville | Review "Either I have...

Director: Gregory Kallenberg The 96 townships contained a rural area in northwestern Louisiana, were told in 2008 that they were sitting on top of an energy goldmine – the Haynesville shale. This gas field is estimated to contain 170 trillion cubic feet (or the equivalent of 28 billion barrels of oil). As we are told by Haynesville, that is a lot of gas – it can also equate to a lot of money. Cue the Beverly Hillbillies theme song. Haynesville tracks three people with varying perspectives and experiences of the discovery of the Haynesville shale. The first, Mike Smith, loves guns, hunting and freedom. (I would venture to guess that he is probably a Libertarian.) His 300 acres of land transforms Mike into an instant millionaire. The second, Kassi Fitzgerald, is a single mom who becomes a community activist upon learning that one of her neighbors was ripped off by an oil company. For no charge, she...

Sundance favorite and World Cinema Grand Jury nominee Four Lions will close the 2010 SXSW Film Festival on Saturday, March 20. The UK film was co-written, directed, and stars Chris Morris.
Other “festival favorites” include Waking Sleeping Beauty, a behind-the-scenes documentary about Disney animation from 1984 to 1994 directed by Beauty and the Beast producer Don Hahn, and Tony, a Slamdance selection and psychological thriller about a serial killer.
Skateland, starring Ashley Green, is also getting another look from festival goers, as well as the raved-about short film from Spike Jonze titled I’m Here. Plus a Doors documentary narrated by Johnny Depp. I’ll be reviewing and covering as many of these films as I can.
Below is a full list of the additional titles screening at the film festival, which runs from March 12th through the 20th in Austin, Texas.
