Co-directed by Tyler Measom and Jennilyn Merten, Sons Of Perdition is a documentary that delves into a taboo subject many Americans probably don.t even realize still exists. While HBO.s hit series Big Love paints an intriguing, if not disturbing, image of the fringe religious culture, this film draws upon the true accounts of teens exiled from their families and community.
Polygamy is a term most readily associated with a past era, but there are still group of people tucked away, out of sight from the larger population, that subscribe to the most fundamental teachings of Mormonism, or he Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, even if the film rarely touches on that direct association. The faith has been making a widespread PR-campaign, but to be fair they.re just trying (in my opinion) to separate themselves from the extreme fundamentalists, like those the teens portrayed in this film have been removed.

The Independent Film Festival of Boston [1] recently released their full line-up and it's a doozy. Sundance favorites such as The Future [2] and Submarine [3] will be there, along with awesome documentaries like Being Elmo [4] (With Elmo In Attendance!!!) and Page One: A Year Inside the New York Times [5]. I'm looking forward to films I wasn't able to catch at Sundance and SXSW, such as the legal documentary Hot Coffee, the heartbreaking How to Die in Oregon, and the new fascinating Conan O'Brien film. Takashi Miike's 13 Assassins [6] also looks like it will rock the house. The full line-up is below. The festival is April 27th through May 4th, and it's one of my favorite movie events of the year. If you live anywhere in New England, I invite you to come and check it out. You can follow IFFBoston on Facebook for updates [7] or buy your passes now [8]! Narrative Features 13 Assassins...

I hope Sons of Perdition is given wide distribution because directors Tyler Measom and Jennilyn Merten have done a great service to all Americans by making this documentary. Everyone must be made more aware of the extent to which innocent people are being persecuted by leaders of religious cults in this country. The movie follows a group of young Mormons who have been raised in the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Flds) and who choose to risk going to hell, something they really fear, by running away from the tyranny to gain freedom of thought. What greater intellectual and emotional journey can even be imagined? I have read and seen films about cults before, but this movie really brings home the degree of psychological abuse that a manipulative power-hungry religious fanatic can wreak on the people that...

The Mormon outcasts at the center of "Sons of Perdition," a documentary directed by Tyler Meason and Jennilyn Merten, bring authenticity to a sensationalist hook. The polygamous community of the "Crick," a Fundamentalist Latter-Day Saints (Flds) enclave run by the dictatorial Warren Jeffs until his 2007 incarceration, drives relatively normal teenagers into self-imposed exile. Living on the outskirts of the Arizona town, these disillusioned characters come together in the hopes of ...

The heartbreaking story at the center of Sons of Perdition is one that frequently appeared on the fringes of news stories about polygamist leader Warren Jeffs, whose 2007 conviction on charges of being an accomplice to child rape shed light on the strange world of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A conservative fringe branch of the Mormon faith, the Flds community mandates polygamy and absolute adherence to the commands of "prophet" Jeffs, meaning that young girls can be married off to men twice their age, or that families can be broken up because Jeffs took an interest in one of the wives, or a man "misbehaved" and was punished by having a wife taken away. Any dissenters in this strict society, particularly male ones, are banished outside of the community and dubbed "sons of perdition," as filmmakers Tyler Measom and Jennilyn Merten explore in their fascinating documentary.

There are spaces in America that are actually not of America, like Colorado City, Arizona. That’s the home of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, headed up by the (now incarcerated) Warren Jeffs and consisting of a tribe of men and women who actively practice polygamy while shunning the outside world.
As with any tribe, there are outcasts, and “Sons of Perdition” focuses on three such young men, who voluntarily left their community while still teens. Sam, Bruce and Joe jump into a modern world without defenses; they soon know to wear their pants with boxers exposed, but remain ignorant as to what comic books are and that Catholics believe in Jesus.
Directors Tyler Measom and Jennilyn Merten follow the boys as they try to find a home, and, while the boys remain relentlessly openhearted and somehow innocent, they’re also slowly learning to close...

Plenty of the movies in the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival have their own Facebook pages, where you can support the filmmakers and kibbutz with other fans. Get friendly with American Mystic, Sons of Perdition, and sex and drugs and rock and roll. (Are you our Facebook friend yet? You know you wanna!) Stephen Holden at The New York Times wrote an overview of the Festival, highlighting Alex Gibney's My Trip to Al-Qaeda, Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Micmacs, and Sons of Perdition by Tyler Measom and Jennilyn Merten. But wait, there's more at the Times, this time all about the Tribeca/Espn docs, including Ice Cube's Straight Outta L.A. Meanwhile, over at Deadline, Mike Fleming dishes on Alex Gibney's in-progress Eliot Spitzer documentary, which "contains interviews with most of the major players including the ex-governor and his women, including one prostitute whose role wasn't known to the media previously.

In the process of making a documentary about three boys who left Warren Jeffs' sect of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Tyler Measom and Jennilyn Merten became much more than outsiders and filmmakers. Sons of Perdition is an emotionally engaging and shocking look at the Flds Church through the eyes of Sam, Joe, and Bruce, three teens who decided that life inside the Crick, aka Colorado City, Az, among the strict polygamists under Warren Jeffs' control, was not what they wanted for themselves. Once out, though, they had nowhere to go - no job prospects, home, or family, and very little education to boot. As the teens struggle, and Joe's family tries to escape as well, Measom and Merten got a firsthand look at the inner workings of the Flds church and the complex problem of its lost boys, as well as the difficulties of...

While most eyes are on Austin, Texas this week for SXSW, many people on the East Coast eagerly await a closer show as this year’s Tribeca Film Festival kicks off on April 21st. The festival is mainly for indie pictures, rather than the larger, blockbuster films, but is also a great place for up-and-coming directors and writers to showcase their work.
With the festival coming up in just over a month, they are already rolling out this year’s schedule and have announced the first 34 films out of a total of 85 feature length and 47 shorts screening at this year’s fest. Among the titles were those submitted to the World Narrative and Documentary competition, as well as the Showcase and Special Events.

The 2010 Tribeca Film Festival has announced its scheduled lineup -- and just like its home, New York City, its got a little bit of everything.
The Festival will kick off with the world premiere of DreamWorks' 3D "Shrek Forever After."
But then it launches into a darker realm with documentaries like Alex Gibney's latest. The Oscar-winning director ("Taxi to the Dark Side") will screen his new untitled doc on the former New York Governor Elliot Spitzer, who resigned his post in 2008 due to a sex scandal, as a work-in-progress. The film will screen as one of three special events that festival organizers announced Wednesday (Mar. 10).
The Special Events section also includes another work-in-progress screening of "The Western Front." This documentary follows its writer/director and Marine, Zachary Iscol, who returns to his battle site in Iraq's Al Anbar province. David Lean's 1965 classic "Doctor Zhivago" got a make-over for its 45th anniversary,...

Alex Gibney's latest documentary, a portrait of former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, who resigned his post in 2008 because of a sex scandal, will be spotlighted at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival, which runs from April 21 to May 2 in New York.
The currently untitled film from the director of the Oscar-winning "Taxi to the Dark Side," will screen as a work-in-progress as one of three special events that festival organizers unveiled today.
"I think people will be really surprised," said David Kwok, the festival's director of programming. "It doesn't just focus on the scandal. It's more comprehensive than that, looking at Eliot Spitzer as a person and at his entire career."
Also playing in the fest's Special Events section are David Lean's 1965 epic "Doctor Zhivago," marking its 45th anniversary with a new restoration that will be released by Warner Home Video, and a work-in-progress screening of the doc "The Western Front,...
