"I don't know how I can help." Gravitas Ventures has revealed an official trailer for a crime thriller titled Among the Beasts, the latest from actor / filmmaker Matthew Newton. Now set to open both in theaters and on VOD coming up in February. When a gangster's daughter reluctantly teams with a former Marine to find her kidnapped cousin, the combat veteran must overcome his own demons in order to rescue the child. There's not much more to the plot than that, yet another of these junk films being dumped on VOD every week. This indie thriller stars Tory Kittles, Libe Barer, Sarunas J. Jackson, Kate Easton, Jeremy Holm, Mark Mitton, with Jon Bass, and Jim Norton. Unfortunately this looks instantly forgettable and entirely uninteresting, not even worth watching the trailer either. Save yourself the trouble and just skip it. ›››

Watching a character make poor choices can be a trying experience, depending on the genre at hand. Seeing this in a comedy? Potentially hilarious. Observing similar acts in a drama? Quite possibly heartbreaking. The new drama Lost Girls & Love Hotels comes very close to going too far over the edge, but a tremendous central turn from Alexandra Daddario saves the day. Without her, it would have been a bleak and unduly trying experience. With her, it becomes a tough but compelling bit of cinema. By no means is it an easy one to watch, but armed with Daddario’s performance, there’s enough here to make it worthy of a slight recommendation. The movie is a character study, mixing some thriller elements into its drama. Margaret (Daddario) has found herself in Japan, living a duel life. By day, she’s an English teacher at a flight attendant academy, teaching a...

"Sometimes the mask is prettier than the thing behind it..." That line sticks with me more than any other from this trailer. Astrakan Film has debuted the full-length official trailer for the indie drama titled Lost Girls & Love Hotels, the latest film from Swedish filmmaker William Olsson (An American Affair). We featured the first teaser trailer last month. Set in Tokyo and adapted from Catherine Hanrahan's novel, the film is about an American woman trying to forget her past by drifting around dangerous nightlife and love hotels in the city. Alexandra Daddario stars as Margaret, co-starring with Takehiro Hira as a Yakuza gangster named Kazu, and a cast including Carice van Houten, Misuzu Kanno, and Kate Easton. This looks sultry and complex, a raw and honest and intimate Tokyo drama that digs deep into our fragile psyche. [it's] a provocative journey inviting you to get lost within the darkest corridors of Japan in hopes of experiencing fleeting moments of beauty." This is just a teaser as the film is slated for release in September this year. Haven't heard of this before but looks good. Always down for films in Tokyo about the city's allure.

Thinking they’re about to crash, Emma spills her secrets to a stranger on a plane. At least, she thought he was a stranger…Until she later meets Jack, her company’s young CEO, who now knows every humiliating detail about her.
Based on the 2003 New York Times bestseller by Sophie Kinsella, Can You Keep a Secret? is essentially a by-the-numbers rom-com about mixed messages, crossed-wires and overly complicated relationships. It’s also obvious from the get-go where this film will end up. Yet none of that stops Can You Keep a Secret? being a hugely entertaining romp. Mainly due to the chemistry of leads Alexandra Daddario and Tyler Hoechlin.

Earlier today, a Trailer dropped for Richard Linklater’s upcoming pseudo sequel to The Last Detail. It’s called Last Flag Flying and is set to open the New York Film Festival this year. Until now, it’s been purely based on speculation that this movie could be a good one. Well, now that I’ve seen the Trailer, I feel confident in saying this should be in contention during the season. You’ll be able to scope it out later, but right now, we should discuss the flick a bit first. There will obviously be more to come around Nyff time, though that shouldn’t stop us from getting a head start now, should it? From the looks of it, the film is going to be at least partly a road trip, working as a sort of pseudo sequel to the classic The Last Detail. Back when the Nyff press release hit,...

Believe it or not, we’re already at the point in the year where fall film festival announcements are being made. Yesterday afternoon, the first shot across the bow was fired when the New York Film Festival announced Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying as it’s Opening Night Selection. Getting a bit of a head start on things, Nyff is planting a flag, no pun intended, on this flick as an awards vehicle. Linklater nearly took home an Oscar for Boyhood, so he’s certainly due. Could this do it for him? Time will tell, but getting this prestigious slot at Nyff is a strong first step. There’s plenty of reason to be excited for this one. This film is a road trip tale, working as a sort of pseudo sequel to the classic The Last Detail. In the press release, Film Society described it thusly: “In Richard Linklater’s lyrical road movie,...
