"You will do as told from now on." Take a trip back to the vibrant 1960s and white picket fence suburbia, when everything was alright, and no one was complaining? The Shift is a smart little sci-fi short film made by Italian filmmaker Francesco Calabrese that feels a lot like "Black Mirror" meets The Stepford Wives. This short originally premiered back in 2015, but Short of the Week has dug it up and re-posted it and since we're only catching up with it now - it's worth featuring and worth a quick watch (only 9 mins). An ordinary day in the suburbs turns out to be anything but when Joe comes home to find out that his wife Betty hasn't been cooking dinner. And there's a good reason for that. The Shift stars Ryan Welsh as Joe, and Molly C. Quinn as Betty, who looks a lot like Bryce Dallas Howard (at...

Set in suburban 1964, Joe arrives home expecting his wife, Betty, to have dinner on the table. Well lets just say that this is anything but an ordinary day. As the story progresses and the mystery unfolds – Joe has to come face to face with a dire situation.
Does that sound vague? Certainly – spoilers people! The problem with The Shift is that clocking in at 8 minutes, the plot is so limited in scope. There is a specific mystery that we, the audience, are looking to understand throughout the duration of the film. While some questions are answered, the overall motives of The Shift feel unanswered and a bit dissatisfying.
One aspect of the film that really worked was also one of the most overlooked components of short films – the acting. The actors portraying Joe and Betty play their roles extremely well. Aesthetically, Director Francesco Calabrese sends you back to a simpler time.

Here's something a little different. In a landscape increasingly cluttered by blogs and short format writing, editors Darryl Knickrehm and David Rees-Thomas have launched Waylines, an online magazine dedicated to speculative fiction. And by magazine, they mean magazine. If the format of the just launched first issue is to be followed then what we're talking about is a collection of interviews with notable authors, original short stories and a collection of short films in every issue. In the first issue they have interviews with Cat Rambo and Christopher Barzak; stories by Beth Cato, Jeremy Sim, and Grayson Bray Morris and short films by Kevin Margo, Francesco Calabrese and Christopher Kezelo. Check it out!...

Lionsgate has acquired the rights to an interesting mockumentary short film called Lovely Monster, directed by Francesco Calabrese. The short tells the story of of a young woman named Sophia, who is dealing with a rare and very dangerous condition that turns her into a monster.
The studio will be adapt the short into a feature length film, and it will be directed by Calabrese from a script written by John Scott 3. Scott 3 previously wrote a film called Maggie that follows a teenage girl who slowly becomes a zombie, so he seems like a solid choice write this flick.
I liked the short and I can see the potential of it being a decent movie. Watch the short below, and let us know if you think it will make for a good movie!

The fine folks at Shock Till You Drop snagged the first look at Leatherface in the upcoming "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D." It's not his face we're actually looking at, but the pictures makes up for that by giving the mute madman a chainsaw. We'll take it. Trey Songz, horror vet Bill Moseley, and Alexandra Daddario are just a few of the names appearing in the seventh installment of the killer franchise. This one is a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper's classic 1974 movie that follows a young woman and her friends through Texas as she attempts to collect an inheritance. Eventually she uncovers the link to a disturbing family connection. You can watch the chilling family reunion when "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D" makes its way to theaters on January 4.

Looks like Italian director Francesco Calabrese is the latest beneficiary of the Hollywood trend of tracking down feature filmmakers from their YouTube short films. Variety reports that Lionsgate, a studio which has a long history with distributing horror, is in negotiations for a feature length adaptation of Calabrese's short film Lovely Monster. It follows a young girl who has something mysterious growing inside her, and similar to District 9's documentary style, it interviews people she's interacted with while building up to a big reveal. Watch the original short and get some more information below. Check it out! Here's Francesco Calabrese's original short film Lovely Monster: Calabrese, who wrote and directed the short, is being lined up to make his feature directorial debut on this project for Lionsgate, and the enigmatic John Scott 3 will write the feature length script. Scott 3 is a particularly inspired choice as a collaborator,...

From the start, let this much be said: Thank god Lovely Monster isn’t a book aimed at 13-year-olds.
With that much established and just as much out of the way, Variety reports that Lionsgate have made plans to snatch up the short film from director Francesco Calabrese, who is also expected to helm its feature adaptation; John Scott III is in line to handle the screenplay. Taking both the title and studio into account, you can probably figure out what genre this falls into.
As it were, Calabrese‘s original work followed “a young woman battling a rare and lethal illness that turns her into a monster” — an interesting idea which only lasted for around five minutes. While the method he and Scott III would employ to expand Lovely Monster isn’t abundantly clear, watching the original still makes it obvious that things only got started with the short...

With the Saw franchise on hold for now, Lionsgate keeps right on mining away for young talent, and that's a very good thing. Next up for the house that Jigsaw built is a feature-length version of the Francesco Calabrese short film Lovely Monster.
Variety reports that Lionsgate is in negotiations to acquire the rights to a planned feature adaptation of Calabrese's well-received horror short, which the Italian helmer will direct from a script by John Scott 3. Why Watch? Staring straight into the camera, a pretty young woman tells us she’s 21 years old, and she’s a monster. Throughout the rest of Francesco Calabrese‘s short film, she explains the problems she faces, and the filmmaker talks to her neighbors, her mother and a scorned friend who all have a different take on this seemingly benign human being. Shot engagingly, every element comes together to hold the mystery. Then she shows her true nature. What will it cost? Only 5 minutes. Skip Work. You’ve Got Time For More Short Films Thanks to Thane E. for the tip.
