Jay A. Allen
- Sound Department
- Editor
Jay Anthony Allen has been interested in post-production since high
school but has always been a very creative and artistic person. Even as
a young child he was able to take things apart, fix them, and put them
back together again. As he became older, he became fascinated with how
people were able to take all of the different parts of film and music
and convert them into one solid element. One can say his natural
problem solving abilities is what makes him a great editor.
During his junior year at Palisades High School, he was introduced to the world of editing by his teacher, Mr. Kerry Feltham. He was given the task of editing highlight videos for the Palisades High School Dolphins boys' and girls' basketball team to music on a linear format. Because of his work, the boys' basketball coach, Mr. James Paleno, commissioned him for two more highlight videos.
After graduating from high school, he attended Santa Monica College in 1997. In addition of honing his skills in non-linear visual editing through the school's broadcasting program, he also learned about audio production/post production through his disc jockey work at the school's radio station, KWRF. During his time at SMC, he also learned more about video and television production through Dateline SMC, the school television news/magazine that is broadcast monthly on the local Cable Public Access Station.
After attaining his Associate of Arts Degree in Liberal Arts, he transferred to California State University, Fullerton in 2004 where he majored in Radio-TV-Film. Additions to refining his skills in video production, he also learned the ins and outs of film production. This is where he learned how to add visual effects and sound design to my projects. During he time at Cal State Fullerton, he engaged in several in-class and independent projects: A Fight To Stand (2005), a short documentary, editor; Zombie Cokehead (2005), a short horror, editor and sound designer; The Neo Phone (2005), a short comedy, co-producer, editor and sound designer; The Fifth Floor (2005), a short comedy, co-producer, editor and sound designer; The Engagement (2006), a short drama, editor and sound designer; and The Perfect Girl (2006), a short thriller that won the horror section at Knights of Short Film Festival 2009.
Most of his projects were entered into various festivals and contests. He refined his post-production education while interning at Goodbye Cruel Releasing during his senior year. As a post-production assistant under Houston King, he learned how to deliver already completed films for both DVD and television distribution. Afterward, he graduated from California State University, Fullerton with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Radio-Television-Film in 2007.
