California rockers Rival Sons have announced that their second new album of 2023, Lightbringer, will arrive on October 20th. In advance of its release, the band has shared the lead single “Sweet Life.”
The album news comes in the midst of Rival Sons’ current North American tour supporting The Smashing Pumpkins (tickets available here). Lightbringer marks the follow-up and companion album to Rival Sons’ Darkfighter, which arrived on June 2nd of this year.
Regarding Lightbringer, guitarist Scott Holiday said in a press release, “When you do two albums back-to-back like this, there are a lot of things to think about. The first record has to pack enough of a punch and tell enough of a story for the second half to have an even bigger impact. We balanced them out with energy and meaning, but the follow-up always needed to deliver a bigger blow. I think Lightbringer provides this.”

In a little more than two hours, Jay Buchanan has to catch a plane from Nashville to L.A., where his band, Rival Sons, is nominated in two rock categories at Sunday’s Grammy Awards. But that doesn’t stop the vocalist, who wails like Robert Plant one minute and Ozzy Osbourne the next, from wading into one of music’s great quagmires — the state of rock & roll.
His hot take: The genre is far from dead.

When Long Beach, California, rockers Rival Sons performed at Bonnaroo this past June, the band turned down its amps to record three songs inside the festival’s “Haybale Studio.” Literally a studio made of hundreds of bales of hay, the sessions are unique to Bonnaroo and capture artists in a naturally soundproofed outdoor space — when Rival Sons frontman Jay Buchanan howls “feeling like I hypnotized you” near the end of “Too Bad,” it’s as if he’s singing just feet away from you.

Rival Sons appeared on The Late Late Show to perform their raucous single “Too Bad.” The Los Angeles rock band, who recently released a music video for the track, kept it simple as they delivered an impassioned rendition of the bluesy, garage-inspired anthem.
In the clip, frontman Jay Buchanan writhes and howls into his microphone as his bandmates noodle on guitars and keep the propulsive rhythm. The song, which comes off the group’s recent sixth album Feral Roots, has even more fervor live.

California-Nashville rock outfit Rival Sons offer a look at their lives on the road and in the studio in the video for their new song, “Do Your Worst.”
“Do Your Worst” is a relentless rocker with a gritty verse spearheaded by a sinister lead guitar riff and thumping drums. The track takes a deft turn when it hits the chorus, forgoing out-and-out guitar bombast for rousing gang vocals with singer Jay Buchanan leading the charge.
The “Do Your Worst” video captures the song’s energy with footage culled from several Rival Sons concerts.
