GenderSamaBhav, a travelling film festival which was in Kochi on August 1 and 2, sparked compelling and vulnerable conversations themed around gender, masculinity, sexuality, and diversity.A still from Reema Sengupta's Counterfeit Kunkoo“Never have I ever kissed someone … who did not want to kiss me.” In Sonam Nair’s We Need to Talk, a short film presented by Tinder India, a party game triggers uncomfortable yet revelatory conversations between a group of friends, paving way to a compelling exploration of consent and boundaries. Though technically a marketing piece, We Need to Talk manages to exude sincerity with its mature and dignified lens on the group of young adults, subtly dwelling on the importance of communication in relationships, of all kinds. In Reema Sengupta’s Counterfeit Kunkoo, the protagonist is a young Mumbaikar named Smita (a captivating Kani Kusruti), a woman robbed of a space of her own, a roof over her head,...

EntertainmentWhile mainstream cinema is slowly changing its portrayal of gender norms, it's nowhere close to what's available online.Tnm StaffThe explosion of content on Over-the-Top (Ott) platforms has meant that there's a wide variety of options when it comes to entertainment. Whatever be the genre or language, viewers are spoilt for choice on online streaming platforms. It's no different when it comes to feminist content. Mainstream cinema in India has largely been disappointing when it comes to the representation of women, mostly conforming to gender norms and patriarchal attitudes. While this is slowly changing, it's still nowhere as close to the kind of content that's available online. Here's a list of web series that will make a feminist viewer happy, and not want to tear their hair out. Churails (Zee5): This show is from Pakistan and is about a motley group of women in Karachi who come together to start a detective agency.

Masaba Masaba (Netflix 6 episodes)
Starring Masaba Gupta, Neena Gupta
Directed by Sonam Nair
Promise not to take it too seriously, and Masaba Masaba, the 6-part Netflix series where Masaba and Neena Gupta play their real-life roles of daughter and mother, promises to be loads of fun.
Firstly the writing is clearly on a roll. The lines flow like champagne at one of those soirees that the characters in this series, all 237 of them, attend regularly. The people who populate Masaba’s elitish life are shamelessly uppercrust Bollywood with serious existential problems like, what do I wear for the evening’s party that I haven’t worn before?
Okay, for Masaba Gupta (played by Masaba Gupta) it gets a little more serious when her husband announces that he wants a divorce. All hell doesn’t break loose. There is so much storm before the calm in this series where everyone is running around going nowhere.

ReviewThe series doesn’t want us to feel sorry for or be in awe of either woman.Saraswati DatarLet’s face it, all of us are curious about movie stars, fashion designers and their luxurious lifestyles. Most celebrities project a certain public persona and qualities or catch phrases get attached to them along the way. In the case of actor Neena Gupta and her fashion designer daughter Masaba, these words are bold, strong, unconventional and occasionally, brave. Masaba Masaba, now streaming on Netflix, cashes in on both, our curiosity about the glamorous lives of those in the public eye, and the fact that both Neena and Masaba Gupta are women who have had far from conventional lives. The six-episode series is created and produced by Ashwini Yardi, directed by Sonam Nair, and written by Punya Arora, Nandini Gupta, Sonam, and Anupama Ramachandran. Actress Dia Mirza, who essays the role of a Pakistani woman in the web series "Kaafir", says art suffers at the hands of fear.
At the show's launch here, Dia was asked about her opinion on Pakistani artistes being barred from working in India by the All India Cine Workers Association (Aicwa) after an attack in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir, in February in which 40 Crpf personnel were killed.
She said: "Art always suffers at the hands of fear... but also art is also reunited and refuelled because of fear. I believe that these prejudices that have been imposed on us, not just take us away from our neighbours, it takes us away from ourselves. And when we deny ourselves the opportunity to communicate and exchange... we are only expressing to the world how fearful we are."

For actress Dia Mirza, who is also a film producer, it's a thing to ponder that in a career of over 15 years, she has worked with women directors only twice.
"It is appalling that in my career of over 15 years, I did not get enough chances to work with women directors... it has been hardly one or two times. I did not intentionally choose not to work with women filmmakers. Unfortunately, there were hardly any women on the director's chair till a few years ago," Dia told Ians over phone.
Dia had worked in Reema Kagti-directed "Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd" in 2007. And years after that, she is now under the direction of Sonam Nair in a web series titled "Kaafir".

After the critically acclaimed Gippi, director Sonam Nair is back with something completely different. This time she ventures into the world of short films and a very unique story. Titled Khujli, the film stars Jackie Shroff and Neena Gupta in a tale about finding a new spark in marriage.
Sonam explains, “Khujli is about a middle-aged couple who get the spark back in their marriage by trying out something new in the bedroom.”
So what inspired that story? “The idea came from the fact that many mothers, including my own, seemed very into 50 Shades of Grey when it came out,” she says, “I was curious about why all these seemingly orthodox middle-aged women loved this book so much. There was some repressed sexual expression there, that had been dying to come out!”
The short film has so many funny moments, so did she ever crack up while writing the script?...

Amidst accusations and criticism over the portrayal of adult content, Karan Johar, who was recently a victim of the Aib roast controversy, has apparently decided to shelve the idea of producing a sex comedy written by Sonam Nair. Call it an aftermath of the Aib roast but Karan Johar's image has received a severe blow after the show got criticized by some due to its crude content. The jokes which were considered to be too 'sexual' in nature on the Aib roast resulted in a long media debate and also a legal battle, as Fir has been filed against Karan, Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor and others. Keeping all of the above in perspective, news is that Dharma Productions chairperson Karan Johar has decided to shelve Sonam Nair's next directorial venture which was supposed to be a sex comedy. According to a source close to the project, "Karan is...

We have a special treat just for you! Sonam Nair, director of the fabulous Gippi, has taken keyboard in hand and written a great blog post about directing and surviving making her first film! It was so cool we had to share it with you!
Making (And By That I Mean Surviving) Your First Film
There are things people tell you, and things people just let you find out on your own. When I decided that I would like to direct films for a living, I was 13 and had no idea what a director actually does. Now, after having directed a film, I feel like I know only about a 10% of what it means to be a director. I guess it’s better than zero!
So, I thought, maybe I should do something no one did for me- write about what you might think making a film is like vs what actually happens.

Gippi’s storyline is pretty predictable and has all the ingredients of a teen movie – a mean girl and her minions, the underdog protagonist, crushes and heartbreaks, friendship… a lot is quite similar to something you might have already seen in Hollywood teen flicks like Mean Girls, Bring It On etc. Even then, Gippi shows a world which is relatable and there are moments in the movie where you would definitely identify with. And that’s because there are no Porsche cars, short skirts and six pack abs, this one is about...

Film: Gippi; Starring: Riya Vij, Divya Dutta, Taaha Shah; Directed by: Sonam Nair: Rating: *** 1/2 (3 and a half)
At the end of this endearing film you have to admit it's not just the pre-pubescent protagonist who has come of age. So has mainstream Indian cinema. It can now talk about issues such as homosexuality and menstruation without a blush.
Meet Gippi then. She is free-spirited, unaffected, overweight and under-confident, though not willing to show it (her lack of confidence, that is). Gippi's story could well have become a trite pedestrian exercize in cliched sequences woven around the acne-ridden years of awkwardness and self-discovery. Instead , debutant director Sonam Nair gives us vibrant vignettes from a young.

It’s been a fairytale journey for Delhi student Riya Vij, who tagged along with a friend for a film audition and ended up bagging the lead role. Riya, who plays the role of a teenage student in Karan Johar’s production Gippi, directed by Sonam Nair, says that even though the she was prepared for a few starry moments, she certainly wasn’t expecting to meet her crush Ranbir Kapoor so soon.
“I’d told Sonam I wanted to meet Ranbir and she arranged it while he was shooting in Mumbai. I took pictures with him. It’s a photo I am never going to delete from my phone! I have the biggest crush on him and he is the cutest guy in the whole wide world. Even my mom and grandma think so. I told him that I saw Barfi thrice in the theatres and he has promised to watch Gippi three times!

Mumbai, May 7: Debutant director Sonam Nair, whose first film is "Gippi", says she will always make films that are close to life and its realities.
Slated for release Friday, her "Gippi" is the story of a teenage girl and how she handles crucial changes in her life.
"My style of filmmaking is that I want to stick to reality zone. On watching my film, people should not feel that they are watching someone is acting. Rather they should feel that they are watching people living their lives," she said here in an interview.
"Making dramatic, typical Bollywood films will be difficult for me," said the director who had assisted.

Mumbai, May 3: Sonam Nair gives credit to her "Gippi" script for impressing producer Karan Johar and convincing him to produce her first directorial venture.
Sonam had earlier worked as an assistant director in Ayan Mukerji's "Wake Up Sid", which was also produced by Karan's Dharma Productions.
"It wasn't that I got the support from Dharma, my script got the support... So I think, if I would have written a script, which was not 'Gippi', then maybe I would still be an assistant director," she said here in an interview.
"I think Karan really liked my script, he related to it. So, he permitted me to make the film. It wasn't.

Mona Singh has been in the news for many different reasons, but this time it is apparently for her unprofessional behaviour. Mona allegedly walked out of Karan Johar’s next production, Gippi, just a few days before the shoot was to start.
A source close to the project reveals, “Mona had been signed on to play the role of Gippi’s mother in the movie. Gippi is a teenager and the film revolves around the problems adolescents face. She was the first choice and all the required paperwork was done. However, just close to a week before the unit could take off to Shimla for the shoot, she backed out.”
We’re told that Mona did not want to play a mommy role so early in her career. But in the TV show, Kya Hua Tera Vaada, Mona plays mother to grown-up kids. The source says, “It was quite a...

The music album of director Sonam Nair's movie "Gippi" has five tracks. Popular musical duo Vishal-Shekhar have made it a point to deliver songs that not just capture the fancy of the young crowd with their beats, but they also give a lot of importance to lyrics. The same can be said of their tracks in "Gippi".
The first track is "We are like this only", sung by Vishal-Shekhar. One can easily describe it as a 'cool' track. With lots of drums and rapping, the track feels funky. It is a good number, but not a dance track. Hard Kaur's rap bits are.

She has made us sit up and take note, as she struggles with all the little-big concerns of an adolescent. Gurpreet Kaur, Gippy is disarming and touchingly naïve as she squeezes into bras, deals with weight issues, falls in and out of love and tackles everything from acne to friendships.
Fourteen-year-old Delhi girl Riya Vij, who plays the protagonist in Sonam Nair’s directorial, mirrors all the concerns of the young adult she plays, and even throws in some pearls of teen wisdom, the way only girls can.
When we caught up with the amateur pianist and basketball enthusiast, she was on her way back from her school Mater Dei. Karan Johar is all set for his new movie Gippi. It is a simple movie about a 14-year-old girl (played by 13-year-old Riya Vij), who falls in love with a hunk (played by Taaha Shah) in her school. It also has a maximum number of newcomers, all from Delhi. They shot during their summer vacations last year.
It’s one of the least expensive projects of Dharma Production and it is directed by Sonam Nair who was an assistant director in Ayan Mukherji’s Wake up Sid.
This movie is different from other Karan Johar movies, usually romantic films and family entertainers that he produces and directs.
Calling Gippi a small film with a large heart, KJo feels that the story of Gurpreet Kaur, aka Gippi, is one that many will relate to.
“Gippi is a new kind of film and it is unusual for us to venture into that space.
