Have you ever showed up to speed dating only to find the opposite side of the barcade banquette occupied by a Puritan it-girl, Chicano art collective or trans-femme disco-dancing granny? For that matter, has your scorecard of prospective singles ever included A24? Hulu? ABC News? If not, then you’ve never been on the floor to pitch your latest film project at Film Independent Fast Track.

At Variety’s 10 Producers to Watch panel, held March 31 at the Sun Valley Film Festival, the first order of business was defining what it means to be a producer, a title — and a role — that encapsulates a number of responsibilities on a film.
“The way that I describe it is you’ve got to know a little bit about a lot of things in filmmaking,” said Rachael Fung, whose film “Fremont” later won best narrative film in the festival’s One in a Million category, recognizing features made for less than $1 million. “You’ve got to be able to understand and talk to every single person that touches the film at every single stage. And also it’s about finding those directors and filmmakers and understanding their vision and figuring out the best way to get that to screen.”

The 12th annual Sun Valley Film Festival runs from March 29th to April 2nd and will feature 18 narrative and documentary titles, including opening night selection, “Fancy Dance,” which is the directorial debut of co-writer Erica Tremblay, and the world premiere of Anthony Mandler’s “Surrounded,” which will close the festival. Award honorees include Josh Brolin, who will receive the Vision Award, and Sophie Thatcher, who will be given the Rising Star Award. “Last year, people were dying to get out, and this year our ticket sales are outpacing 2022. Once again, there’s a strong appetite for live events,” says festival founder and executive director Teddy Grennan.

"In this psychological horror fable of displacement, Aisha (Anna Diop), a woman who recently emigrated from Senegal, is hired to care for the daughter of an affluent couple (Michelle Monaghan and Morgan Spector) living in New York City. Haunted by the absence of the young son she left behind, Aisha hopes her new job will afford her the chance to bring him to the U.S., but becomes increasingly unsettled by the family’s volatile home life. As his arrival approaches, a violent presence begins to invade both her dreams and her reality, threatening the American dream she is painstakingly piecing together."

“Nanny,” the horror film that won the top prize at this year’s Sundance, has been acquired for release by Blumhouse and Prime Video. An individual with knowledge of the sale telling TheWrap the movie was acquired in a competitive situation.
Nikyatu Jusu’s debut film, which she wrote and directed, won the 2022 Sundance Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, making “Nanny” the first horror film to win in the category and making her only the second Black woman director to have their film win the top prize.
Blumhouse and Prime Video formed a partnership in 2019 to release films under the “Welcome to Blumhouse” banner, and “Nanny” will continue that collaboration.

Sundance 2022’s top prize winner, filmmaker Nikyatu Jusu’s “Nanny,” has been acquired by Blumhouse and Prime Video.
The companies jointly secured worldwide rights for the horror-drama, which premiered to rave reviews at Sundance in January, before ultimately winning the Sundance Grand Jury Prize, making history as the first horror film to take the festival’s top honor. Jusu is also only the second Black woman director to win the award.
Written and directed by Jusu, in her feature directorial debut, “Nanny” follows a Senegalese woman named Aisha (Anna Diop) who recently immigrated to America. When Aisha starts working as a nanny for a wealthy New York couple, she also begins having haunting visions. Michelle Monaghan, Sinqua Walls, Morgan Spector and Rose Decker star alongside Diop.
The film was acquired from Topic Studios, Stay Gold Features and LinLay Productions in a competitive bidding situation. The deal was negotiated by CAA Media Finance.

Blumhouse and Prime Video have won world rights to Sundance horror-drama Nanny, we can reveal.
In a competitive situation, which also included SPC and Neon, Prime Video ultimately won out thanks to a deal in the $7M range. Blumhouse’s Jason Blum saw the movie and instantly fell for it so wanted to include it as part of the company’s Amazon deal. There is also a theatrical commitment, we understand.
From in-demand first-time feature writer/director Nikyatu Jusu, Nanny premiered at Sundance this year in the U.S. Dramatic Competition to strong reviews and went on to win the Sundance Grand Jury Prize, the first horror film to take the festival’s top honor.

When “Nanny” writer-director Nikyatu Jusu got a message from the Sundance team in late January asking to jump on a call, the first time filmmaker realized that the project must’ve won an award, which would be presented publicly the next day.
First, Jusu thought that the prize might go to the film’s star Anna Diop, who’d been earning rave reviews for her performance as Aisha, a Senegalese woman who recently immigrated to America and begins working for a wealth family on the Upper East Side in New York City. Then, she speculated the prize could be for cinematographer Rina Yang’s work lensing the film, which would be a win for the whole team. But she didn’t imagine that the film would instead win one of Sundance’s grand jury award in the U.S. dramatic category — and she certainly didn’t expect her reaction to be captured in real time.

Nikyatu Jusu was just happy to have a movie at Sundance. Now, she’s its biggest winner: “Nanny,” Jusu’s first feature, won the Grand Jury Prize at the virtual 2022 edition and instantly brought a spotlight to the director’s singular vision. She is only the second Black woman director to win the prize, and the first horror director to do so. The outcome automatically makes her a talent to watch, and she has a lot to say about it.

Ultimately, that was “Nanny,” the riveting tale of a Senegalese immigrant (Alice Diop) tasked with caring for a white family in New York while coping with strange supernatural forces that hark back to her homeland. Exclusive: Morgan Spector and Phylicia Rashad have joined the growing ensemble of Stay Gold Pictures and Topic Studios Nanny. They join Anna Diop, Michelle Monaghan and Sinqua Walls. Stay Gold Features, Topic Studios and LinLay Productions have teamed up to finance and produce. The film marks Jusu’s highly anticipated feature directorial debut, the script for which she also penned.
The film follows, Aisha, an undocumented nanny (Diop) who takes a job working for a wealthy Manhattan family on the Upper East Side in the hopes that she may earn enough money to bring her six-year-old son from West Africa to live with her in New York. Aisha finds herself caring for the privileged child of Adam (played by Spector) and Amy (played by Monaghan). “
As Aisha prepares for the arrival of her young son, a violent supernatural presence invades her reality, threatening the “American Dream” she so painstakingly pieced together.
