The November Man

Running Time: 1 hr 48 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: August 27, 2014
Plot: A former CIA agent (Brosnan) who is nicknamed after a month of the year is rehired for one last bizarre mission.
Who’S It For? Nothing else to see and like action standards? Maybe you’ll like a matinee showing of The November Man.
Overall
Pierce Brosnan was a good James Bond. Regardless of what may be said about the films within his stint as the famous secret agent, he wore the uniform well, spoke the lines, and did it with finesse. In a business sense: he was a good employee, but he was not a part of any big movements within the series, aside from starring in an action movie about the news (Tomorrow Never Dies) or that one time he surfed a...

Sweet, Silly November: Donaldson’s Espionage Thriller is Overbaked
Starting out with a standard template of flourishes one can find in any number of garden variety spy thrillers, Roger Donaldson’s The November Man gets a lot of credit for being unexpectedly agile and energetic, generating mild tension as appropriate and even utilizing cast members more effectively than most B grade members of its species. But like a semi-talented juggler that takes on one ball too many, Donaldson’s film of furiously committed and concurrent clusters end up smashing into each other to concoct a rather silly and sallow end product. What’s unfortunate is that there are a couple likeable elements to the feature that make it entertaining to sit through, and one only has to compare this to Donaldson’s last film, the wretched Nicolas Cage headlined Seeking Justice, to be thankful for at least that.

Like a worrywart parent who fears that video games will turn their child into a sociopath, it’s conceivable that the higher-ups of intelligence agencies might have some concern over how the spy movie genre has influenced their incoming agents. Are they driven to pursue other careers when they find out that being an operative is more about eavesdropping than dropping bodies? Do they instinctively distrust the suits running ops from behind desks, particularly the ones who look like masculine character actors? And do they expect to eventually be betrayed by the organization and country they’ve sworn to serve, just as their silver screen idols always are? Sadly, The November Man, the latest bog standard entry in the spy thriller genre, won’t be changing any of these misconceptions, even if its star has a pedigree in espionage fiction that’s always been amongst the best.
