Exclusive: Vertical Entertainment has acquired North American rights to the political satire Land of Dreams, directed by Shirin Neshat and Shoja Azari, which is making its North American premiere in the Spotlight Narrative section of the Tribeca Film Festival in June. The global indie distributor has slated the film for a day-and-date theatrical release in 10 of the top 20 markets—including in Los Angeles and New York—this fall. (Watch a new trailer unveiled today by the company above.)
Set in a near-future America which has closed its borders and become more insular than ever, the story follows Simin (Sheila Vand), an Iranian American woman on a journey to discover the core of what it means to be a free American. Simin works for the Census Bureau—the most important government agency of her time. In efforts to understand and control its populous, the government has begun a program to record the citizens’ dreams.

Variety has been given exclusive access to the trailer for Shirin Neshat and Shoja Azari’s satirical, surrealistic film “Land of Dreams,” which opens the Horizons Extra section of the Venice Film Festival. The filmmakers won the Silver Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival for their first feature film, “Women Without Men.”
“Land of Dreams” stars Sheila Vand, Matt Dillon, William Moseley and Isabella Rossellini. Beta Cinema has sales rights worldwide, except for the U.S., which is being handled by UTA.
The screenplay is by the late Jean-Claude Carrière and Azari. Carrière, who died earlier this year, was Luis Buñuel’s screenwriting partner on six of Buñuel’s films. Carrière won an Oscar for the short film “The Anniversary,” and was Oscar nominated for Buñuel’s “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “That Obscure Object of Desire,” as well as Philip Kaufman’s “The Unbearable Lightness of Being.

Two of this year’s participants discuss opening doors to transatlantic co-productions, and the event’s organisers explain why the Lab will be taking a break next year.
Since launching in 2010, Toronto International Film Festival (Sept 8-18) industry event Producers Lab Toronto – run by European Film Promotion (Efp) in collaboration with the Ontario Media Development Corporation (Omdc) – has been bringing together producers from Europe, Canada and more recently Australia and New Zealand, with a goal of fostering transatlantic relationships and projects. Previous films that have been pitched at the lab include Alan Gilsenan’s Catherine Keener-starring drama Unless, which world premieres in Tiff’s Special Presentations this year, and Martin Koolhoven’s Guy Pearce-starring Western Brimestone, which also plays in Special Presentations.
This year, 24 producers attended the event, taking part in a series of meetings, talks and sessions on funding and how to approach international co-productions. “Sometimes producers find it difficult to think of new...

Security people aside (I recognized one gentlemen who is part of my daily/yearly Cannes experience), part of the well-oiled machine of the fest is the entire PR personnel. The relaxed, non-rushed, non-competitive setting is a blessing for journalists — it means we’re fortunate to have dibs on all talent attending the fest. Among the folks that were part of the Canadian delegation, I was most interested in speaking to a pair of French Canadian talents who’ve reached far beyond the confines of Quebec.
The sit-downs took place in an epic lieu — the as far as the eye can see La Mamounia garden. I spoke with Oscar nominated War Witch (internationally known as Rebelle) helmer Kim Nguyen and C.R.A.Z.Y producer Pierre Even about their previous international successes and the immediate future. Prior to this, it was a stone’s throw away from my pad to...

Screen reveals a slate of forthcoming projects from producers promoting movies at the Seville Film Festival
Iranian director Sina Ataeian Dena is to follow his successful drama Paradise, about a struggling teacher, with two more interconnected feature films about violence in Iranian society.
Dena is to collaborate with producers Yousef Panahi (brother of acclaimed director Jafar Panahi) and Amir Hamz at Bon Voyage Films on all three films.
The second, as yet untitled, film has already started shooting in Iran, although the team have had to do so discreetly.
“We are having to be very creative in our approach to avoid challenges when making these films, each of which will take a different artistic approach to violence in Iran,” explained Panahi. “There will be a crossover in certain scenes between the three movies.”
Dena, Panahi and Hamz also revealed plans to work on a feature length film project in Shanghai with a Chinese co-production partner.
