With over a decade at one of the most successful independent studios under her belt, Michelle Sneed is striking out on her own.
The Tyler Perry Studios alum, who most recently served as president of the sprawling and prolific Atlanta operation since 2018, just launched a new studio. A Few Good Women Productions is targeting a first-of-its kind model, with an exclusively female leadership offering green lights and maintaining project autonomy through every phase — acquisition, development, financing, production, licensing and distribution.
“One thing that I’ve always said is, ‘Why do big studios get to have lot of fun?’ — and by ‘fun’ I mean majority ownership of these assets,” says Sneed, who wants to see that money trickle down not to just partners and creators but budgets. “I have dedicated my career mostly to Black and brown content. And I’d say that about 99 percent of the time it’s been on extremely small budgets.

Madea is back. Tyler Perry is taking his iconic femme senior character who has grossed over $1 billion at the box office to Netflix with a 12th movie, A Madea Homecoming. A 2022 drop date is planned.
Perry will direct and write with Will Areu and Mark Swinton producing. EPs are Perry and Michelle Sneed.
No plot details yet. Perry reportedly said that Madea would be making her final appearance in the 2019 Lionsgate feature A Madea Family Funeral, which made $75M at the global box office. That’s obviously not the case.
A Madea Homecoming continues Perry’s work with Netflix following last year’s release of A Fall From Grace which was watched by 39M households in its first month. He is also writing, directing and producing A Jazzman’s Blues for Netflix. That pic stars Joshua Boone and Solea Pfeiffer, and unravels 40 years of secrets and lies in a tale of...

Say Hallelujer, Madea fans! Tyler Perry is bringing back his most beloved character for an all-new adventure on Netflix.
Perry will write, direct and star in the film, donning Madea’s dress, wig and devil-may-care attitude one more time. Perry retired Mabel “Madea” Simmons in 2020 with the sold-out “Madea’s Farewell Tour” (which was also filmed for BET plus), while the character’s final film appearance came in 2019’s “A Madea Family Funeral,” where Perry ostensibly closed the casket on the character.
Perry has been quietly developing the project since last fall.
“I was done with Madea, completely done with it,” Perry told Variety, when he was honored as 2020’s Showman of the Year. “But as I’ve been looking at the state of the world — and I finished a tour in January, just before the pandemic started to break in the country — and the amount of joy and laughter...

Tyler Perry’s Madea is back! Perry is bringing his beloved character back to life, and this time, they’re heading to Netflix.
Perry will write, direct and star in “A Madea Homecoming,” which will be the ninth “Madea” film and the 12th time he will have portrayed the iconic old lady on screen. The news comes after Perry had said in 2018 that he intended to kill off Madea once and for all and end the franchise with 2019’s “A Madea Family Funeral.”
“It’s time for me to kill that old bitch. I’m tired,” he told Sirius Xm at the time. “I just don’t want to be her age playing her.”
The films have been box office boons for Lionsgate for over a decade, and all of Perry’s films, including the “Madea” series, have collectively made over $1 billion at the domestic box office — so this is a big get for Netflix.

Exclusive: BET has picked up a third season of Tyler Perry’s Sistas, cable’s No.1 series among Black viewers in the key adults 18-49 demographic.
The renewal comes ahead of Sistas’ midseason premiere on Jan. 27. Production on season 3 is slated to start at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta at the end of the month, six months after the show’s second season wrapped at the studio. Tyler Perry’s career as a TV producer came full circle earlier this year, when the first series he became truly known for, “House of Payne,” returned to the airwaves after an almost decade-long absence.
Reflecting on his prolific run to date as a producer, Perry says the response to the new season of “House of Payne” on BET has “blown me away,” especially given how significant the project has always been for him.
In 2006, Perry produced 10 syndicated episodes of “House of Payne” before TBS picked up the series for an additional 90. Tyler Perry Studios president of production and development Michelle Sneed, who has worked with Perry since 2009, says an order of that magnitude was “groundbreaking and unprecedented.”

Approximately seven weeks into the coronavirus pandemic “Good Trouble’s” Joanna Johnson made a deal with Freeform for a two-night special event series about relationships strained by social distancing. After about another two months, this series, “Love in the Time of Corona,” was filming in its actors’ homes.
Filming this way, with only a few crew members on site, waiting outside, it was one of the first productions to turn cameras on amid a larger shutdown. For the health and comfort of everyone involved, Johnson tells Variety the show had a safety coordinator on set, “which is going to be a new reality going into production.”
Covid manager. Covid compliance supervisor. Covid compliance officer. The official title currently varies depending upon whom you ask, and so too do the specific duties and ways of interacting with other personnel differ slightly, depending on the type of project. But everyone is in...

Tyler Perry’s Madea will take one last bow on August 27, when a filmed version of the character’s final stage tour premieres on BET+.
The subscription streaming outlet announced the release date Wednesday for Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Farewell Play, which it bills as the “final stage run” for Madea. A press release said Perry, as Madea, “pulls together some of his audience’s favorite characters for a family gathering” in a performance lasting more than two hours. Perry is executive producer, directed and writer, in addition to his starring role.
Current events, including Covid-19, enter the scene. The live show was filmed in May, judging by a glimpse of the theater marquee in a promo for the special (watch it above). At one point, Madea separates two women who are about to hug each other. “Got that coronavirus going around!” she cracks.
