Orlando, Fla. — Rep. Maxwell Alejandro Frost’s (D-Fla.) MadSoul music festival was supposed to be a party for activists — a celebration of Central Florida’s progressive and queer community, in a hostile state. Frost wanted to show how far the community has come and its defiant rejection of Florida’s increasingly right-wing tilt, with a mix of music and community building featuring appearances from indie artists and progressive politicos, like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
But the festival would take an unexpected turn near the end, highlighting the mounting tensions between progressive...

Empress Of has announced her fourth studio album: For Your Consideration, due March 22nd. Today, along with the announcement, she shared the single “What’s Love” featuring Muna.
For Your Consideration will be Empress Of’s first full-length release since 2020’s I’m Your Empress Of, and follows 2022’s Save Me EP. Spanning 11 tracks, the new record’s press release explains that it will be “a bi-lingual album that embraces camp and fantasy playing with the idea of Hollywood.”
In a statement, Empress Of’s Lorely Rodriguez explained that the title of the album is a reference to an ex-lover. “I was in love with a director and he was announcing his ‘For Your Consideration’ campaign for the Oscars,” she said. “He took me up on a hill and said he was emotionally unavailable and he kind of broke my heart. In “Everything You Want,” the second single from Matt Rogers’ new album Have You Heard of Christmas?, he croons about sending holiday tidings to a former flame — who, as it turns out, he can’t quite remember. “Gifted you my heart and swore a lifetime of my love, you’ve gone away now,” he sings. “Go get everything you want even if you can’t give that from me…all the stuff you like, which I forgot.”
The song, which is also a collaboration with Katie Gavin of Muna, was one of the last he added to the tracklist. The collection began as new recordings of songs the actor and writer has been performing as part of his musical comedy tour of the same name, but Rogers felt it was missing something a little more emo. “I needed a song that went full Pisces,” he says with a laugh. “My...

Comedian Matt Rogers was stoned, wandering the streets of New York City, reeling from a bad breakup, and trying desperately to unlock the lyrics of a song steeped in this heartbreak — that also had to fit on his Christmas album. He had the start of a hook (“Go get everything you want…”) and a core idea, hoping his ex will get everything he wants in life, even if Rogers won’t be the one to provide it. But that was it.

Toward the end of boygenius’ headlining set at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 2, Phoebe Bridgers asked the sold-out crowd for a favor. Could we all put away our phones for the next song? Remarkably, all but a scattering of contrarians complied.
“I was emboldened to write this song because I knew we were going to do this band,” Bridgers said, in one of many references to the rock-solid friendships at the heart of her collaboration with Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker. “And if you relate to it, I’m so sorry.

Our June 2023 CoSign Amber Bain, aka The Japanese House, has shared her second studio album, In the End It Always Does, via Dirty Hit. Stream it via Apple Music or Spotify below.
In her CoSign interview, Bain tells Consequence she found comfort in working with producer Chloe Kraemer, who she describes as now one of her best friends. “She reflected myself back at me in a lot of ways,” she says. “These songs are all about queer experience and being a queer woman, and I think that working with another queer woman helped get those songs out and treat them with the kind of romance that they need and deserve.”
Other collaborators on In the End include Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon (“Over There”), Muna’s Katie Gavin, and Matty Healy (“Sunshine Baby”) and George Daniel of The 1975, the latter of whom co-produced multiple tracks.

Muna have stopped by the NPR office for their very first Tiny Desk Concert, marking a dream-come-true moment for the pop trio. Expanding to a septet with bass, drums, and strings, the group performed stripped-back versions of “Loose Garment,” “Stayaway,” and “Silk Chiffon.”
“It really feels like a fever dream to be here, we cannot believe we made it to the desk,” vocalist Katie Gavin said, before quipping: “It’s very cool to see that everyone who works for NPR is gay.” The crowd laughed in agreement, reinforcing a vibe of togetherness that Muna has become skillful at fostering. With their lyrics and harmonies taking center stage, the emotional resonance of their music was able to shine.

At their show at Terminal 5 in New York on Tuesday, the pop trio Muna brought out a very special guest to help sing their closing number “Silk Chiffon”: Lorde.
Clad in big red pants and a leather jacket, Lorde hopped onto the stage — eliciting thunderous applause from the crowd — and provided vocals for “Silk Chiffon,” the band’s biggest hit. Dancing face-to-face with Muna’s lead singer, Katie Gavin, the New Zealander seemed to embody the song’s refrain of “Life’s so fun,” complete with a big smile.
“Silk Chiffon” was the breakout single from Muna’s 2022 self-titled album, which paved the way for them to become Consequence’s Band of the Year in 2022. The original song features a verse from Phoebe Bridgers, who signed Muna to her own Saddest Factory Records.

Muna have unveiled their latest single, a funky pop bop entitled “One That Got Away.” They initially debuted the song at Coachella this past weekend, and they’ve now released its cinematic music video. Watch below.
Grounded by a booming kick-snare beat and a pulsing electro bass line, the song becomes a vehicle for the trio’s dancey pop style. In a statement, the band’s Katie Gavin said: “This song is just rubbing your hot ass in the face of someone who messed up their chance of being with you. It’s a bit vengeful and mean, but also fun. Muna decided to really challenge themselves during their appearance on triple j’s “Like a Version” cover series. The trio performed their own reimagining of Céline Dion’s enduring Titanic anthem “My Heart Will Go On.”
Although taking on a song like “My Heart Will Go On” is a pretty daunting feat, the members of Muna certainly didn’t try to replicate Dion, instead turning the sweeping, melodramatic ballad into a slightly twangy indie-pop number. Rather than scrambling for those high notes, vocalist Katie Gavin brings things down an octave, letting bandmates Josette Maskin and Naomi McPherson fill out the sound with some gorgeous harmonies.
Complete with just the right amount of reverb, some nice piano arrangements, and a very sick slide-guitar solo near the song’s end, Muna turned “My Heart Will Go On” into something entirely their own. Watch their performance in the triple j studios below.

Spoiler alert: This song is addictive. From the minute Katie Gavin delivers a line about cherry lipstick across summery acoustic guitar, “Silk Chiffon” ignites a blast of bubblegum indie pop in your brain with no intention of burning out. Like an endless sparkler on the Fourth of July, you just hold on and watch it glow.
“Silk Chiffon” is Muna’s first release on Phoebe Bridgers’ Saddest Factory Records, and it’s one of the L.A. band’s strongest songs yet, an uncharacteristically bright and buoyant declaration of queer love.

“I must be some great feeler,” Katie Gavin sings with a wink on Muna’s latest record. “I must be really deep.” On Saves the World, Muna’s second effort, the L.A. trio builds upon the thoughtful electro-pop-rock they began sculpting on their 2017 debut, navigating weighty topics like addiction, alienation and romantic abjection with spry sing-alongs and crisp choruses that can mask the heaviness of the material at hand.

Muna evade a run-in with an old lover in the glittery new video for “Stayaway.” The track is the third single off the group’s upcoming sophomore album Saves the World, out September 6th via RCA.
The video features vocalist Katie Gavin exiting a shower and wiping steam from her bathroom mirror to stare at her reflection. “Leaving you was easy, now I gotta do what’s hard,” she announces over a pulsating dance beat. “I gotta stay away.”
