The transfer window is for fans what Christmas is for children. They write their wishlists and send them off to the imaginary football Santa in the hope that come the climax of Deadline Day, all their wishes will have come true. For Arsenal fans, this was meant to be the summer that Arsene Wenger would spend his cash reserve and turn them into title challengers. In the end, it turned out to be a summer of striker related sagas which ended with Arsenal signing a world class attacking midfielder to join two free agents and a loan signing. So how well have Arsenal done this summer? Could their transfer business see them challenge for the Premier League title once again?

Arsene Wenger has moved to right one of the biggest wrongs of his recent managerial career by sending Brazilian reject Andre Santos out of the club.
According to the MailOnline, Brazilian side Gremio have confirmed that Santos will officially complete his loan move today, confirming speculation that the full-back was about to return to South America sparked when he was photographed arriving in Brazil on Sunday. The Brazilians will unveil the 29-year-old as their latest recruit today at 2pm local time following his medical.
Santos, who only made 26 appearances for Arsenal (scoring four goals), signed from Fenerbahce for £6.8million back in August 2011, and he has lofty aspirations for his new club, telling Gremio’s official website “I came to be a champion with the club.”
His goals return might have been impressive considering his appearances, and his position, but the Brazil international has found himself further down the pecking order...

Arsene Wenger offered so much optimism for the Gooners during the transfer window by assuring that he wanted around 2 key additions that would strengthen the side. The likes of David Villa, Mohamed Diame, Wilfried Zaha and many more were linked with moves to Arsenal but, to the disappointment for Arsenal fans, none were actually brought in.
Arsenal however, did make one signing, the reported £10m capture of former Malaga left back, Nacho Monreal. This was the result of an injury that Kieran Gibbs sustained in midweek against Liverpool; the other left back choice Andre Santos is not preferred to the role, as Wenger cannot rely on his weak defensive performances.
Nacho is on a reported four and a half year deal at the Emirates worth a princely 60k a week. He is the second player to be brought in from Malaga since the £15m signing of Santi Cazorla back in the summer.

Are Arsenal on the trail of a new international left-back?
According to The Sun Arsene Wenger is attempting to put together a deal for Spanish defender Nacho Monreal, who currently plies his trade at Malaga.
This comes after Kieran Gibbs picked up a thigh injury against Liverpool last night in the 2-2 draw, leaving Andre Santos as his only fit option at left full-back.
Earlier in the day, the BBC’s David Ornstein had revealed on his Twitter account that the North London side were working hard on their attempts to bring in a new left-back and now it seems that Monreal is the option that Wenger is pressing ahead with.
Following that news, Madrid-based newspaper As has reported that Monreal is currently in London ahead of a move to join former teammate Santi Cazorla to the Emirates. They suggest that the deal is worth 10million Euros.

Manchester City:
Roberto Mancini’s team will be without Maicon (knee injury), Aguero (hamstring), Nasri (suspended), long term casualties Jack Rodwell and Micah Richards. Yaya Toure, his brother Kolo and Abdul Razak are also unavailable – having left for the African Cup of Nations – leaving manager Roberto Mancini without some of his key players. On the positive side, Aleksandar Kolarov returns from a groin injury.
Match Preview
The encounter comes as pivotal for both sides where the defending champions currently trail Manchester United by 7 points.

According to the Mirror Manchester United winger Nani is Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s top transfer target in January, as the Frenchman looks to bolster his side in the New Year with further signings.
Wenger is hoping that having sold Robin van Persie to United last summer, Sir Alex Ferguson will return the favour and allow Portuguese Nani to move to the Emirates.
Nani is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury and hasn’t played for the Red Devil’s since November 3rd, when they beat Arsenal 2-1 at Old Trafford.
And with Theo Walcott still undecided on his Arsenal future, the signing of Nani could be a direct replacement for the Englishman. According to the Mirror, Wenger has been told he has money to spend and could afford Nani’s transfer fee of around £12m as well as Nani’s revised wage demands, with Arsenal able to go to £90,000-a-week.

Arsenal have a clean bill of health with no fresh injuries to report, nor suspensions. They are still without Andre Santos, Abou Diaby and Lukasz Fabianski.
The same cannot be said for the visitors; defender Mike Williamson is suspended until January 2nd after picking up a booking against Manchester United on Boxing Day, whilst midfielders Hartem Ben Arfa, (hamstring) Yohan Cabaye, (groin) Vurnon Anita (ankle) and Jonas Gutierrez (knee) are all out.
Long-term absentees Ryan Taylor, Haris Vuckic, Yohan Cabaye, and Steven Taylor all remain sidelined, along with Dan Gosling, but Ivorian Cheick Tiote returns after serving a one game ban.

The winter transfer window is nearly upon us, and while they say you can’t get a good deal in January, those battling at the top and bottom will be keeping their eye out to see if the right player becomes available at the right price.
While names like Radamel Falcao and Daniele De Rossi might grab the big headlines, there are a number of players for whom the transfer window gives them a chance to escape the hell at their current club and in one way or another reboot their career.

Arsenal take on Wigan Athletic in Saturday’s early afternoon Barclays Premier League clash of the day. Kick-off at the Dw Stadium is at 12.45pm and the match will be screened live on Sky Sports 3Hd on UK television.
Here’s the team news ahead of the game…
The Gunners have no fresh injury problems going into the game having come through their Monday night victory at Reading unscathed. Contract rebel Theo Walcott could once again be utilised in a central forward position ahead of Olivier Giroud, after the Englishman caused Reading’s defence much panic in the 5-2 drubbing, for which Walcott got on the score sheet.
Left-back Andre Santos (stomach muscle) and midfield anchor Abou Diaby (thigh) remain sidelined through injury.
For Wigan, former Arsenal player Ryo Miyaichi (ankle) remains on the long-term injury list, along with Albert Crusat (knee). Ben Watson’s broken leg keeps him out,...

As a life-long Arsenal fan I grew up with the chants ‘boring boring Arsenal’ and was generally quite content with winning 1-0. Nowadays expectations are entirely different and not only do you want your team to win, but you want them to win in style. You only have to look at Chelsea winning the Champion’s League last season, and scrapping wins in the semi-final and final to know that you need to entertain and make sure football is forever known as ‘the beautiful game’.
That said Arsenal need to add some iron to their midfield, and have needed to for some time. It’s usually one of the first things I do when I pick up the latest copy of Football Manager, and in fact my main signing on FIFA 13 was Marouane Fellaini. With the departure of Alex Song in the summer to Barcelona, this void was always going...

2003 was a memorable year in the history of Arsenal football club; the year marked the last time The Gunners won the Premier League and also the last time they lost on home soil to a non-English side in the Champions League. The ‘Invincible’ days must seem like a wistful daydream to the Arsenal fans that left early as they were losing 2-0 on Wednesday night.

Arsenal probably didn’t deserve to be trailing by half-time. Vito Mannone made a mess of Alexander Tettey’s speculative long range drive, and Grant Holt, played onside by Andre Santos, pounced on the rebound and converted one of the few chances either side created in the first half. Arsenal were passing the ball around with confidence, but they clearly lacked a sense of urgency as they failed to produce any meaningful chance on goal throughout the entire game.
If the Canaries were forceful and speedy on the counterattack, Arsenal were slow to spread the ball and lacked imagination. Arsenal’s defense was shambolic and all over the place in the second half, and the team never managed to hit top gear at any point in the game. It might just be that some of the players were simply exhausted from the international break, but losing against a side that...

A big part of the pleasure and appeal of playing Career Mode is stumbling on a relatively unknown sensation of a player, and the appeal seems to be magnified when those players come from the colourful football capital that is Brazil, thanks in part to the mythos of that country and also to its established pedigree in creating on-pitch magicians.
There is good reason Chelsea went Brazilian this summer to bring in highly-rated Oscar, and why Man United were linked so strongly with a move for Lucas Moura – the country has an enviable knack for creating the kind of mobile, technical impressive midfielders and attackers that England have sorely missed in the past generation as other national teams have thrived with more progressive set-ups.

“The title race is long but we have to make...

According to reports from the Daily Mirror Arsene Wenger is set to return to Southampton to sign their latest star prodigy having already recruited both Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The latest Saints name to be linked to Arsenal is 17-year-old left-back Luke Shaw, whose form and potential have seen him likened to Gareth Bale.
The youngster is an attacking full back in the same style as Bale started out with similarly blistering pace, and an eye for both goals and assists, thanks to his good set piece delivery. He scored three times from left back in Southampton’s Under-18 team, and has been promoted to the Saints first team squad in time for their return to the top flight this coming season.
Shaw has already been linked to Champions League winners Chelsea as a potential long-term successor to Ashley Cole, but Arsene Wenger seems likely to test the Saints...

Arsenal take on Premier League champions Manchester City in a mouth-watering pre-season friendly in China at Beijing’s National Stadium this afternoon. Kick-off is at 1pm and the match will be screened live on Espn in the UK.
Both clubs have a big chance here to snatch some serious bragging rights before the Premier League season kicks off next month.
Roberto Mancini’s City haven’t had the best of pre-seasons just yet as the blue half of Manchester still seem somewhat hung-over from the glorious celebrations of their first league title victory in 44 years thanks to that last gasp win that clawed the trophy away from their bitter local rivals on the last day of last season. The Citizens were surprisingly beat 1-0 by Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal earlier this summer before then drawing with obscure German side Dynamo Dresden but they did pick up the pace with...

Whilst it is without question that Arsene Wenger has brought untold success to Arsenal Football Club, he is not free from scrutiny. Arsenal may have won the double twice under his management but since 2005 have undergone a baron period leading even the most staunch Wengerites to begin to question whether Arsenal will challenge again under the leadership of the 62 year old Frenchman.
His inability to keep the best players at the club, as well as being unwilling to pay to bring real talent only scratch the surface as to why it is time for Monsieur Wenger to bid au revoir to the Emirates.
1. Losing Key Players
One thing that Mr Wenger is very successful at is developing young players and helping them reach their potential. We can see that over the years, he has developed world talents such as Thierry Henry and Robin Van Persie, taking them from virtual unknowns...

Transfer dramas plagued Arsenal’s previos pre-season prompting the club’s worst league start in 58 years. With that in mind, they seem keen to wrap up their business quickly this time.
Last summer was extremely frustrating for Arsenal fans. While rivals Tottenham signed players of proven premiership pedigree; like Scott Parker and Brad Friedel; Arsenal were busy trying to stop the inevitable departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri.
In the end Fabregas re-joined Barcelona, and Nasri dropped the Emirates for the Etihad with Gael Clichy having done so weeks prior.
The promising trio of Alex-Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gervinho and Carl Jenkinson arrived at club, but these were very much players for the future. The departing players needed replacing as they formed the core of the team. Without them the Gunners were exposed, and this was clear during their 8-2 thumping against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
This triggered manager Arsene Wenger into action.

Arsenal’s season threatens to come off the rails every week at the minute, but the strong showing against Milan in mid-week and the exciting acquisition of Lukas Podolski for next season will have given Arsene Wenger’s men a much needed boost after the disappointment of the 4-0 away leg drubbing in Milan. A win tonight against Newcastle United who sit in sixth with a five point cushion over Liverpool would see Arsenal move to within two points of North London rivals Tottenham in third.
Arsenal fans will no doubt want to see Wenger encourage his team to go for the jugular and repeat Tottenham’s mauling of Newcastle three games ago in which Harry Redknapp’s men mercilessly pulled the Toon’s defence apart with some cut-throat direct play. If Wenger chooses to play Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from the start (and he surely must on form) then the North...

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is sitting on a £57 million transfer war chest that he will spend in the summer, according to a report in The Mirror.
The revelation comes the day after a miserable week for Wenger where The Gunners were humiliated by AC Milan in a 4-0 disgrace at the San Siro that all but ends their Champions League hopes this year, before the hapless side crashed out of the Fa Cup last night without as much as a whimper to Sunderland.
Now as the fan outcry gets louder against Wenger’s reluctance to change his stubborn mindset and transfer policy, comes the news that he will be ready to spend the large budget he has accumulated from the sales of Cesc Fabregas ($35 million to Barcelona) and Samir Nasri ($22 million to Manchester City) last summer.

For Arsenal, centre back pairings Laurent Koscielny (knee) and Per Mertesacker are out, the latter suffering an ankle knock this week in the defeat to AC Milan that could keep him out for a lengthy spell.

Team News ahead of Arsenal’s trip to the San Siro in Italy for the first leg Champions League second round tie against AC Milan. The game is screened live on ITV 1.
Arsene Wenger won’t be able to call on German centre-back Per Mertesacker who is ruled out with the ankle injury he picked up on Saturday’s visit to the Stadium of Light.
Better news though comes with the return of Kieran Gibbs, who is fit again after a groin problem. He slot should back into left full-back, allowing Thomas Vermaelen to switch back to his preferred central role alongside Laurent Koscielny with Mertesacker out. Swiss international defender Johan Djourou is another option.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said;
“Mertesacker’s replacement will be the most natural… That means I will put Vermaelen back in the middle.”
“Gibbs looks to be ready and I might start him, but I haven’t decided completely yet.

Arsene Wenger is ruing the loss of 10 first teamers for today’s huge game. Thierry Henry will miss out on his first league start for Arsenal in five years with a calf problem. Mikel Arteta is out with the same problem and Thomas Vermaelen is a huge doubt for the same reason.

Thierry Henry, Arsenal’s greatest ever footballer, came back with style on Monday night by incredibly scoring the winning goal in what otherwise was a tight cup tie at home to Leeds United. An amazing, emotional, turning back the clock moment but one that now brings with it some expectations that Henry can do it every week. Certainly manager Arsene Wenger has a decision to make today as to whether to pair Henry with goal machine Robin Van Persie for a tough encounter at the Liberty Stadium against a side who have only lost once at home this season and that to Manchester United.
If Henry, on loan from the New York Red Bulls plays today this will be his first league start for Arsenal since 2007.

The start of the season saw doom and gloom for Arsenal fans as pundits and other fans were quick to write off their title chances after an uninspiring (and frankly worrying) first few results, but Arsene Wenger appears to be pulling his ship in the right direction now. An impressive goal haul from Robin Van Persie has gone some way to turning the tide, but Arsenal’s recent manifesto for team play doesn’t fit with that dynamic, and Wenger must either convince fans and critics that this new way is the way to success, or he must invest in quality to finally make Arsenal a contender again.
Arsenal aren’t as broken as some commenters might like us all to believe – particularly those affiliated with north London rivals Tottenham – they certainly still have a lot of quality, they simply don’t have the experience or steel at the minute...

A mouthwatering fixture to cap off an epic Super Sunday this afternoon as top of the table Manchester City host Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium, hoping to make it seven wins in seven at their ground in the Premier League this season. Arsenal are top of the league… of the Champions League at least and go into tonight’s Group F game against Olympiakos in Greece likely fielding a youthful second or third string side. Arsene Wenger shocked fans and pundits alike by dropping Robin van Persie to the bench after his hat-trick heroics on the weekend. However even the introduction of the Dutchman was not enough to get the Gunners three points against Marseille at the Emirates.
The first half was a very back and forth affair. Marseille started the half with gusto, attacking Arsenal from the off and creating chances but not making the most of them. Loic Remy was often the architect of their early chances, consistently getting the best of Arsenal left back Andre Santos and linking up with his team mates with ease.
After the first ten minutes Arsenal started to find their feet in the match and could’ve been awarded a penalty after Souleymane Diawara had a handball decision ruled against him on the edge of the box. The replays shown that the Senegalese defender was inside the...

An incredible game this early afternoon at Stamford Bridge saw the forgotten men of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal overturn their London rivals Chelsea 3-5 with Robin Van Persie the undisputed man of the match scoring a hat trick. It was the first time that Chelsea have ever conceded five goals at home and it will be a day they will want to forget, especially as they scored first through Frank Lampard’s header and looked like they would be heading to another victory at home. They then quickly cancelled out a Van Persie equaliser by scoring again through John Terry‘s 16 yard effort just before half time and few could imagine the effort that Arsenal would give in the second half.
The second forty five truly belonged to Arsenal. A fabulous strike from outside the box full back Andre Santos, reviving memories of Brazilian fullback Silvinho against the Blues some...

Arsenal came away with a very good win against Didier Deschamps’ group leaders Marseille at the Stade Velodrome in the Champion’s league. A last minute winner from Aaron Ramsey gave Arsene Wenger’s side the three points after a solid performance which turned to near domination in a quiet second half. The French side started brightly but all but fizzled out after half time, allowing Arsenal to finally break the deadlock.
Arsene Wenger is no stranger to French football, but the Marseille he knew back in his days of Ligue 1 management were relegated for bribery and match fixing. Their chairman Bernard Tapie was thrown in jail, and Wenger, manager of Monaco at the time, left the league and continued his management career in Japan. Tonight saw his return to the Stade Velodrome though, this time at the helm of Arsenal and the Marseille he faced, now managed by Didier Deschamps,...

Robin van Persie put in a true captain’s performance as Arsenal got a vital three points to go some way to turning around their rather dismal season, as they ran out 2-1 winners against Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium. It was a fantastic 90 minutes of football which started 29 seconds in as van Persie took the lead for the hosts. Then two magnificent free kicks – first from Sebastian Larsson, then from van Persie again completed the scoring.
There are certainly still issues for Arsene Wenger to address, but a good performance nevertheless by both teams. Sunderland fans won’t be too worried with their poor start to the season if they can replicate this performance on a more regular basis.
Two underachieving sides met at the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal took on Sunderland. The Black Cats had never beaten the Gunners on their home soil, but did manage to hold...

The claim of being the top dog of North London is a stake this late afternoon as rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal meet at White Hart Lane in the live 4pm televised kick-off on Sky Sports. And if history tells us anything this should be a cracker of a tie with only one solitary goalless draw between the two teams in their last 31 meetings in all competitions and goals galore in recent times. Out of all the derbies in the world, this one tends to the most open with the best free-flowing football showcased.
Plus today there is the added spice of on-loan Spurs striker Emmanuel Adebayor once again tormenting Arsenal fans by playing for their bitter rivals and he’s started the season off swimmingly scoring 3 in 3. Could we possibly see a repeat of his Manchester City days of running the whole length of the pitch to rub a...

Arsenal v Swansea
Prediction: 3-1
This should be the game in which Arsenal get their season back on track, and whilst I think they should win, it may prove difficult initially unless they can find an early goal. Swansea outplayed Man City at Eastlands and the 4-0 loss did not reflect the pattern of the game. If Arsenal keep patient and the fans don’t get anxious they should see off Swansea in the second half. It will be interesting to see which of the 5 latest additions Wenger opts to use in this game. With Gibbs back to full fitness for a week or two, Andre Santos should start on the bench. Mertesaker should start after Vermaelen’s latest injury and Arteta is a shoe in. Benayoun should start from the bench, but Park has not yet arranged his visa so may not feature at all.
