Actor Walton Goggins collaborated with Quentin Tarantino for the 2015 feature The Hateful Eight. And although he had a good time on set, Goggins asserted that the experience could be a bit nerve-racking due to who he worked with.

Goggins and Tarantino already collaborated before the 2015 movie The Hateful Eight. The pair worked together on Django Unchained, where the pair became familiar with each other on set. But beyond Django, Tarantino was also a fan of Goggins’ work on Justified. Given how much he enjoyed the actor’s performance, there was little wonder as to why Tarantino would recruit Goggins again for The Hateful Eight.
But Hateful Eight would have Goggins act alongside even more star-power than Django Unchained did. And Goggins admitted that could be overwhelming at times.

The first three seasons of FX’s “Fargo” were embraced by the Emmys, racking up loads of nominations including for Best Limited Series. However, season four broke that pattern as critics and viewers alike came away largely disappointed by the series — it didn’t quite match up to the heights of the first three entries.
But “Fargo” season five look like it will get the show back in the Emmy spotlight. The season is set in Minnesota and North Dakota in 2019 and tells the story of Juno Temple as a midwestern housewife plunged into dangers she thought were firmly in her past. Jon Hamm delivers a change-of-pace performance as a sheriff while Jennifer Jason Leigh turns in a wildly entertaining performance. Critics agree, this fifth season is a return to form.
Dan Eivar (Financial Times) observed: “The show’s masterful, suspense-ratcheting approach to action sequences is matched by its assured writing and considered character work.

[Editor’s note: The following story contains light spoilers for “Sharp Stick.”]
There’s been a lot of panic lately about whether or not Gen Z is having enough sex. Based on a few studies that first appeared in 2016, the handwringing headlines include BuzzFeed declaring Gen Z Is Having Less Sex Than Previous Generations, Newsweek asking What’s Driving Gen Z’s Aversion to Sex?, and The Guardian dubbing it Gen Z’s Sex Recession.
Gen Z encompasses those born between 1996 and 2012, making the youngest Zoomers 10 and the oldest 26 years old, which also means that the evolving reasons for this supposed downturn are mostly still conjecture. The Guardian suggests it’s a good thing, with a growing awareness around consent leading to a “quality over quantity” attitude. One study found a correlation between reduced alcohol consumption and reduced casual sex. Others have blamed helicopter parents.

Is Donald Trump’s America turning into the movie “1984”? That was the question on the mind of many audiences who flocked to independent movie theaters in droves on Tuesday for special screenings of the film that were organized to protest Trump.
Nearly 200 theaters in the U.S. showed the film based on George Orwell’s dystopian novel from 1949, plus five theaters in Canada and a handful of locations in the U.K., Europe and New Zealand. We went to one packed screening at the Alamo Drafthouse in New York, where the crowd was more than willing to open up about the parallels between the movie’s dystopian world and the current state of the American government.

As far as first impressions go, Alex Garland’s Ex Machina proved to be quite a remarkable directorial debut. Blending button-pressing themes of artificial intelligence and a breakout performance from Swedish actress Alicia Vikander, the screenwriter more than proved that his talents aren’t restricted to a pen and paper. Imagine our excitement, then, now that Garland’s next feature film is shaping up to be a doozy.
Entitled Annihilation, the film will bring Jeff VanderMeer’s acclaimed sci-fi novel to the silver screen – the first book in the Southern Reach trilogy – and over the past few months Garland has been quietly assembling his cast. From Creed star Tessa Thompson to Natalie Portman and Gina Rodriguez, the female-centric feature focuses on a crack team of scientists – a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, and a surveyor – who throw caution to the wind and venture into a patch of American land known as Area X.

So, you’ve enjoyed most of last year’s animated feature films? Yes, 2015 was a pretty good year, but doesn’t match up to the gold standard of 1999 (Toy Story 2, The Iron Giant, Disney’S Tarzan, and South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut). Still Pixar had its best work in years with Inside Out and that Shaun The Sheep was a loving tribute to classic silent comedies, but the other major hits like Minions and The Good Dinosaur were geared toward the small fry (not that Out and The Peanuts Movie didn’t appeal to all ages). For this new film, definitely leave the kiddos at home. Yes we did have an “R” rated animated film last year with Hell And Back, but that flick was chocked full of sophomoric sex jokes and “gross-out” gags. This holdover from ’15 (now getting a wide release) is truly adult in subject matter and graphics,...

Todd Haynes’ Carol headed into the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton on Sunday evening with the highest number of nominations - five - and left empty-handed. Away from the business of winning awards, arguably the most anticipated part of the evening was the inevitable encounter between show host Ricky Gervais and Mel Gibson, making his return to the limelight after years in the wilderness following a series of anti-Semitic and misogynistic remarks and erratic behaviour.

This year’s Oscar race may offer a new experience to many first time nominees throughout the Academy’s categories.
Though many familiar faces are a part of this year’s final push toward the big night (notably: last year’s best director, Alejandro G. Inarritu for his western revenge epic, The Revenant, and best actor, Eddie Redmayne for his performance as transgender artist Einar Wegener/Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl) the roster of never-been-nominees is shaping up to be quite substantial.
Redmayne’s costar, Swedish actress Alicia Vikander, looks like a strong contender for her performance as artist Gerda Wegener in The Danish Girl. The 27-year-old has never been nominated by the Academy but recently received a nomination from the Golden Globes for her work in the film.
Vikander has some stiff competition in the category, however, and not just from past winners...

Walton Goggins chats about working with Tarantino, The Hateful Eight, and House Of 1000 Corpses...
Walton Goggins is excited about The Hateful Eight. The film is really good, he’s terrific in it and, as one of the lead characters in the new Quentin Tarantino film, it’s perhaps his most high profile role to date. He has a lot to be excited about.
Even his hair looks excited, jutting up wildly. He’s animated and moves a lot, but he’s not wired and out of control. He just exudes enthusiasm and seems happy to be where he is, talking about his work. He’s great fun to talk to; enthusiastic and warm interview subjects are something of a gift. Here’s how our chat with Walton Goggins went.
How do you respond, when you get that script (for The Hateful Eight)?

In the stop motion-animated feature from Charlie Kaufman, Anamolisa, Jennifer Jason Leigh voices a woman who helps a struggling writer (voiced by David Thewlis) escape the mundanity of his life. Jason Leigh’s performance earned her the first voice-only nomination in the history of the Independent Spirit Awards and sparks anew the debate over whether or not voice acting should be recognized by the Academy.
Technically, there is no rule from the Academy that restricts voice actors from receiving nominations, but it has never happened. In 2014 Scarlett Johansson had many critics asking if it could be done, for her voice-over work in the sci-fi romantic drama, Her, from director Spike Jonze. Though the film received a best pic nomination, Johansson’s voice work was not recognized by the Academy.

If you haven’t seen The Hateful Eight yet, here’s my advice – stop reading. Stop right now. Quentin Tarantino’s eighth cinematic hootenanny needs to be digested organically, not spoiled by influencing statements. Pulpy surprises and a chaotic evolution demand reactionary enjoyment, as Tarantino meticulously fills this devastating powder-keg to the brim – primed for an explosive second act. Tension is meant to bubble naturally, foaming with Tarantino’s stir-crazy, who-killed-who madness. Read on at your own risk, partner.
Still here? Good. That means you’d like to discuss The Hateful Eight, and why wouldn’t you? This wild Western plays out like two wholly different films – one a Reservoir-Dogs-style character thriller, the other a gory Django Unchained shoot-em-up. An intermission divides the two segments, acting like a bi-polar switch between two opposite personalities. Patience is certainly required, but it’s also equally virtuous given how drastically things change. There I was,...

Harvey Weinstein must be rubbing his hands in glee in a week that reminded everybody of Carol’s credentials and delivered Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) kudos to another film in his stable – The Hateful Eight.
Three nods for Quentin Tarantino’s eighth film have highlighted a trio of rock-solid contenders that should make a splash among awards groups hereonin as the awards race begins to get interesting.
Tarantino for original screenplay, Jennifer Jason-Leigh for supporting actress and Ennio Morricone for score are surely more than a match for anybody.
The HFPA always spreads its largesse far and wide: the split between drama and comedy or musical in the film and lead...

Close behind were Spotlight and Beasts Of No Nation on five apiece, followed by indie darling Tangerine and Anomalisa on four each.
Not even a glitch that saw the list of nominees temporarily appear on the Film Independent website prior to the official announcement could spoil what turned out by and large to be a recognition of independent film in its myriad forms.
Besides the more predictable contenders like Carol, Spotlight and Room, there was plenty of love for Tangerine, shot on an iPhone, and Beasts Of No Nation from Netflix, whose day-and-date release (and what that portends) infuriated large swathes of the exhibition sector but has clearly...

Charlie Kaufman is back with his first film in seven years.
Stop-motion has never been as deep as it is in Kaufman and Duke Johnson's Anomalisa. The acclaimed screenwriter who is famous for penning the philosophical and profound scripts for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and his directorial debut Synecdoche, New York, tells his most simple story yet.
In the first trailer for Anomalisa, motivational speaker Michael Stone (David Thewlis) asks, "what does it mean to be human?" Funny enough, Anomalisa looks like the kind of film that may have the answer to this question.
With a cast featuring Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Tom Noonan, and based on the voice play that featured the same actors, Anomalisa follows Michael Stone (Thewlis), a man who has lost all meaning in his life. He faces a glimpse of hope when he meets Lisa (Jason Leigh...

Yesterday brought our first look at The Hateful Eight via Entertainment Weekly’s cover, but now that the magazine has hit stands, seven new shots from the Quentin Tarantino-directed Western are available for your viewing pleasure.
Highlighted by the new images are stars Kurt Russell, Bruce Dern, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michael Madsen and Samuel L. Jackson, all dressed up in some ridiculous outfits. The print edition of Entertainment Weekly also provided some further insights into the pic, with Jason Leigh saying of the relationship between her collared outlaw and Kurt Russell’s bounty hunter that the pair “are essentially the most dysfunctional couple since Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” If the two character are romantically involved, as hinted by the actress’ hand on Russell’s shoulder in the cover shot, it’s certainly easy to see how that could be the case.
