A series of nightmarish journeys for TikTok, a choose-your-own-adventure interactive romantic comedy, and the third season of Meta Runner are among the online projects set to share in $1.8 million from Screen Australia.
The nine titles to receive online production funding cover YouTube, Facebook, Igtv, TikTok, VR, and even a bespoke smartphone app and website.
Screen Australia head of online Lee Naimo said the assortment of release platforms spoke to the ingenuity of online creators when identifying and finding their audiences.
“We’ve been blown away by the volume of great applications coming in this year and we are proud to announce such a large slate of projects as part of Screen Australia’s ongoing commitment to online storytelling,” he said.
“These projects showcase the depth of local talent working in the online space, as well as the broad range of genres cutting through to online viewers.”
Screen Australia’s online team has recently been restructured.

New seasons of TikTok series The Formal and YouTube’s Australia’s Best Street Racer are among the six projects to share in more than $920,000 from Screen Australia’s Online Fund.
There is also Facebook/YouTube comedy Counter Girls, which is a spin-off of hit series Rostered On, TikTok vertical series Krystal Klairvoyant, as well as satire Clockwork and therapy exploration It’s Fine I’m Fine, both of which are for Facebook.
Screen Australia’s senior online investment manager Lee Naimo said it was pleasing to see online creators working hard to identify and then hook in their audiences with great characters and storylines.
“We can see great examples of this with new seasons of 2 Street 2 Racer and The Formal which both connected with viewers on YouTube and TikTok respectively,” he said.

A Beginner’s Guide to Grief is the latest project to be greenlit via Sbs and Screen Australia’s Digital Originals initiative, with an additional six projects selected for further development.
The series, written by and starring Anna Lindner, follows 31-year-old Harriet Wylde as she returns to her hometown in remote South Australia to care for two terminally ill parents. Renee Mao directs and the series’ EP and creative producer is Linda Ujuk, working with Kojo Studios colleague Kate Butler. Julie Byrne also produces. The South Australian Film Corporation (Safc) has supported the production.

Six Lgbtqia+ web series concepts will each receive $2,000 in development funding after being shortlisted for Screenwest and Screen Australia’s Out Now initiative.
The successful teams have begun development workshops for their ideas this week, taking guidance from writer, director, and producer Julie Kalceff (Common Language Films), writer, actor and producer Tim Spencer (Wintergarden Pictures), and web series producer Melanie Rowland (Lilydale Films).
The projects range from ancient covens of mystical characters to explorations of disability, diverse and Indigenous queer identities.
Screenwest interim talent and skills development manager Chantal Chateauneuf said the organisers had been “so impressed” with the originality and creativity of the applications they had received.
“I am very excited to see how the selected projects refine their stories and audience engagement strategies through these workshops,” she said.
“We hope that each team will come out of the workshops with an increased knowledge of the online space, a stronger project,...

An animated series about inanimate relationships has triumphed in Screen Producers Australia (Spa) and TikTok’s inaugural ‘Got a Minute’ pitching competition.
Sam Cotton’s Ani-Mates was crowned the winner at today’s Screen Forever after receiving a score of 27 out of a possible 30 from the judges.
‘Got a Minute?’ challenged creators to capture audiences with 60-second stories.
Ani-Mates was one of three finalists, together with Katia Mancuso’s choose-your-own-adventure Pov horror story Beneath the Darkness, and Hannah-Rae Meegan and Monique Terry’s high school comedy The Formal.
Cotton, who is based in Hobart, will receive $15,000 to develop 10 one-minute episodes of his concept, with the runner ups receiving $5,000.
The creative said the cash prize will go a long way to expanding his entry.
“This means the world to me.
“At the moment, I’m drawing with my finger on an old-school iPad through a $2 app, so there is a lot of upgrades that can happen.

Aspiring drama practitioners with stories that reflect and explore the diversity of Australia in “innovative, entertaining and compelling ways” are invited to apply for this year’s Digital Originals initiative.
Delivered by Screen Australia and Sbs, the program is designed to develop projects from screen creatives who have been traditionally under-represented for Sbs On Demand and Nitv.
Up to 10 teams (which must include at least one writer) will be invited to attend an exclusive workshop in Sydney scheduled for May 4-6, featuring a range of industry guest presenters.
The workshop will focus on short-form narrative writing skills, as well as developing the projects to align with the Sbs Charter and Sbs platforms, culminating in a pitch to Screen Australia and Sbs.
Of these 10 teams, up to four will be chosen to take their projects into further development, from which three will be chosen for production funding and commissioning with Screen Australia and Sbs.

Enoch Mailangi, Bjorn Stewart and Kodie Bedford.
Writer and creator Enoch Mailangi’s five-part series All My Friends Are Racist is set to go into production for ABC iview in November.
The comedy centres on digital natives Casey and Belle who live together in the big smoke. He’s a gay Aboriginal influencer, she’s an Aboriginal budding lawyer. They are the hottest friendship in town and the party is always at theirs. Life couldn’t get sweeter for these first-generation rich kids. But when their ‘burn book’ wall, where they’ve listed all their friends as racists, is discovered, they are suddenly ousted from the friendship group. The pair need to make a decision on who and what they are willing to lose to finally grow up.

Pallavi Sharda, Ilai Swindells and Maria Angelico.
The ABC has ordered a six-part narrative comedy from Unless Pictures and Orange Entertainment centred on Covid-19 isolation, due to start filming – remotely – this month before airing in July.
Titled Retrograde, the series follows the lives of a group of 30-something friends, as they drown their sorrows at a ‘virtual bar’ during the pandemic. It will star Pallavi Sharda, Ilai Swindells, Maria Angelico, Esther Hannaford and Nick Boshier, with guest star Ronny Chieng.
The cast will film from their respective locations, activated by remote technical operators and working with an overarching technical director, as they record a group video chat that forms the central storyline. In addition to the main eps, there will be extended digital content to deepen audience engagement.

Screen Australia has assured producers that all the production funds for At Home Alone Together will go direct to the writers, performers and production teams whose concepts are commissioned for the eight-part ABC comedy.
The agency stressed that none of the funding will go to ABC employees. While the ABC will own the program’s IP, the content creators can exploit the IP of their characters by sharing the sketches on social media platforms and YouTube
If questioned the commissioning and funding process after being contacted by two producers who feared the funding might go to the ABC as an in-house ABC production, thus setting a precedent.
They expressed concern that producers may have to compete with the public broadcaster for direct subsidies from Screen Australia even if the production companies are then commissioned by the ABC.

‘Nice Shorts.’
Nick Boshier and Jazz Twemlow are leading the team of comedy writers/performers who will create Nice Shorts for Bunya Entertainment.
The online sketch comedy of 16 episodes, ranging from 3-10 minutes, will tap into national and international conversations to create videos for weekly release via social platforms.
Apart from Boshier and Twemlow the team includes Nazeem Hussain (Legally Brown), Greta Lee Jackson (Wham Bam Thank You Ma’am), Penny Greenhalgh (The Lost Tapes) and Bjorn Stewart.
The Bunya Group is not looking to monetize the low-budget online series, instead using it as the first opportunity to work with comedy creatives and as the first foray into comedy for the new banner Bunya Entertainment.
“Like the dramas we’re best known for, the quality of writing in Nice Shorts will be the hallmark of this show,” says Bunya Group CEO Sophia Zachariou.
Bunya Entertainment is developing seven narrative comedies including one with Adam Zwar.
