The fact that Willie Nelson is still touring at 91 is often celebrated as a feat of superhuman endurance — he just delivered an exceptional set at Stagecoach Festival and is on the road all summer with Bob Dylan. But Nelson’s recording output in his golden years is just as impressive. In the last 10 years alone, he’s released 16 different studio albums that, among other conceits, ruminated on mortality and lost relationships, paid homage to the songs of Frank Sinatra and George Gershwin, and reinvented his own material as bluegrass rave-ups.

For Miranda Lambert, creating music is all about embracing every emotion and experience life has to offer. It’s an ethos she’s extended beyond the studio, taking it into consideration even when she’s on stage performing for thousands who find connectivity through shared experiences. One of the most moving moments of her live show is the inevitable performance of her 2010 hit “The House That Built Me,” a song that Lambert described in a recent sit-down with Tamron Hall as “everybody’s song.”

They make a big deal about songwriting in Nashville. The country music industry throws parties when a song hits Number One, banners crowing about chart success are staked in the yards of the publishing offices lining Music Row, and the craft itself is spoken about in hushed, reverent tones — even if that mystical art is sometimes just three dudes in a room trying to find a new word to rhyme with “beer.”

Tim McGraw returned to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Monday night to perform “Hard to Stay Mad At,” a track from his new solo album, Here on Earth, his first in five years.
Seated underneath a chandelier and in front of a towering window view in his home, McGraw and his band performed the understated but soothing track, co-written by Lori McKenna, Shane McAnally and Luke Laird. McGraw sang with his trademark ease: “If you weren’t so damn stubborn, we would’ve never got this far/Be just another casualty,...

For a long time, Tim McGraw thought he could benefit from taking six months off. Even before music became his career, he had always had a job; when country stardom took over, his workload only increased. He was perpetually on the road, supporting his albums and hits like “My Best Friend,” “I Like It, I Love It,” and “Real Good Man.” But when 2020 and the pandemic set in, he was forced to test out his theory.

Willie Nelson has now been releasing music for over seven decades, since the 1950s. Yet his enthusiasm for finding great songs remains unmatched: See “The First Rose of Spring,” the title track of his new album, written by Nashville pros Randy Houser, Allen Shamblin and Mark Beeson, a perfectly-crafted love song with a tragic ending; it’s the kind of track made for Nelson to deliver, and he plays a gorgeous, melody-shaking solo on his ragged guitar Trigger. After writing many of the songs on 2018’s Last Man Standing and 2019’s Ride Me Back Home,...

Willie Nelson will turn 87 on April 29th — on April 24th, he’ll release his 70th album. Titled First Rose of Spring, the record features two new songs written by Nelson with producer Buddy Cannon, and Nelson’s interpretations of tracks penned by Toby Keith, Chris Stapleton, and his longtime friend and contemporary Billy Joe Shaver. The country legend, whose last album was Ride Me Back Home, tackles Keith’s “Don’t Let the Old Man In,” Stapleton’s “Our Song,” and Shaver’s “We Are the Cowboys.”

When David Ball’s single “Thinkin’ Problem” hit country radio in the spring of 1994, it played alongside tunes by neo-traditionalists Tracy Lawrence, Mark Chesnutt, and Alan Jackson. Yet even then it seemed like an anomaly.
With Ball’s a cappella delivery of the opening line, “Yes, I admit I got a thinkin’ problem,” sung with the hard-edged twang of a Buck Owens-George Strait hybrid, the song, written by Ball with Allen Shamblin and Stuart Ziff, was the first taste of mainstream country success for the Spartanburg, South Carolina,...

Los Angeles—For the 50th episode of its genre-swapping performance show, “Crossroads,” Cmt turned to two female performers at the top of their game: Katy Perry and Kacey Musgraves. (Spoiler Alert: Stop reading now if you don't know the songs they performed) The taping, which took place Friday night (18) at Sony Studios, served as a precursor for what to expect when the two acts tour together this summer, as well as showed that the bridge between Musgraves’ traditional county tunes and Perry’s power pop isn’t as long a one as it might seem. That’s, in part, because Perry came prepared to cross the divide into country and seemed eager to show off her singer/songwriter side. For sure, she’s done that before in her ballads, such as “Not Like The Movies” or “Unconditionally,” but she’s best known for her uptempo, fun confections. Also notable about...
