Exclusive/Film Bazaar: Girish Kulkarni to star in sequel to 2013 neo-noir thriller.
Writer-director Nikhil Mahajan is working on a sequel to his 2013 Marathi language neo-noir thriller Pune 52.
“The scripting is done, the finance is in place. We are just waiting for [actor] Girish Kulkarni to become free,” said Mahajan, whose last film release was the 2015 vigilante film Baji.
“The sequel will thematically follow what happened in the last film but the character played by Girish will not be the same,” Mahajan added.
He also continues to develop Hindi-language project Daily (Dainik), which was announced in 2013. Mahajan said, “It’s a period film set in the 1970s so I need a decent budget. We have about 60% of the finance and are trying to raise the rest of the funds.”
After the Pune 52 sequel, Mahajan will also work on sugar factory politics film Factory (Kaarkhaana). Producers are Suhrud Godbole’s Ime Motion Pictures and Mahajan’s Blue Drop Films.

Rajkummar Rao has been cast in Nikhil Mahajan’s Daily (Dainik), which was selected for this year’s Nfdc Screenwriters’ Lab.
The film will be co-produced by Suhrud Godbole’s Ime Motion Pictures and Mahajan’s Blue Drop. Rajkummar has previously starred in films such as Hansal Mehta’s Shahid and Abhishek Kapoor’s Kai Po Che.
Daily will mark the first Hindi-language film for Mahajan and Godbole, who earlier collaborated on Marathi film Pune 52.
Mahajan’s Blue Drop will also produce Varun Grover’s Mother Goddess Coaching Class, which also took part in this year’s Nfdc Screenwriters’ Lab.
“I met Varun in Toronto during the first session of Screenwriters’ Lab and I liked his script instantly,” said Mahajan. “It’s a very relatable, slice-of-life comedy and I thought why not produce a film that I can’t make myself.”...

D earCinema profiles the six screenwriters who are participating in Nfdc Screenwriters’ Lab at the ongoing Toronto International Film Festival.
Screenwriters’ Lab, a 2-part workshop conducted by the National Film Development Corporation (Nfdc) is designed to prepare screenwriters with original Indian stories for working with the international filmmaking community.
Nikhil Mahajan answers five questions about his project “Dainik” (Daily):
Tell us about your project:
Dainik (Daily) is an investigative drama set in the 1970s. It’s a story of a young, firebrand journalist and an extremist, Hindutvawadi goon, who form an unlikely friendship to start the first daily newspaper in a town that had none of its own. Based on true events, Dainik traverses the journey of this newspaper and the challenges that it brings with it.
At what stage of development is it?
I am still working on the screenplay. I am also meeting actors and looking at possible casting options.
