Fifteen minutes into Brandon Colvin’s third feature, A Dim Valley, Albert (Whitmer Thomas) presents Ian (Zach Weintraub) with a generously packed bowl of marijuana, which the two proceed to light up. Shortly thereafter, they witness a surreal vision in the forest near the field research camp where they’re spending the summer, but to call this a drug-induced departure from realism would be inaccurate. From the very beginning of this whimsical backwoods tone poem, Colvin establishes something like a stoner ambiance: pacing is lethargic, odd bits of behavior are lingered on, glassy-eyed stares into the middle distance proliferate. There’s a sense […]

"We're here to fulfill our purpose." Altered Innocence has released an official trailer for an indie film titled A Dim Valley, which is described as "part hilarious stoner comedy and part transcendental meditation on mysticism and love." This originally premiered at the Oxford Film Festival and Raindance Film Festival last year, arriving in theaters in July. A curmudgeonly biologist and his slacker graduate assistants muddle their way through a summer research project. Deep in the Appalachian woods, they encounter a group of mystical backpackers who change their lives in mysterious ways. Starring Zach Weintraub, Whitmer Thomas, Robert Longstreet, Rachel McKeon, Rosalie Lowe, and Feathers Wise. This is all quite strange and definitely seems like they took some psychedelics. I like the quote at the end because I'm also very confused. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Brandon Colvin's A Dim Valley, on YouTube (via ScreenAnarchy): A curmudgeonly biologist...

If you're in the mood for something a little etheral and even a little evokative keep an eye out for Brandon Colvin's third feature film A Dim Valley. An official selection at the Raindance, Sidewalk, and Charlotte Film Festivals the film was picked up by boutique label Altered Innocence back in the new year but was delayed for obvious reasons. "Part hilarious stoner comedy and part transcendental meditation on mysticism and love" A Dim Valley is coming to The Quad in NYC on July 2nd. We are pleased to premiere the trailer and the poster today. You will find both below. A curmudgeonly biologist and his slacker graduate students (Whitmer Thomas & Zach...

It has been a while since we heard from our friends at Altered Innocence but they've come to us with word that they have picked up the North American rights for Brandon Colvin's A Dim Valley. A curmudgeonly biologist and his slacker graduate students (Whitmer Thomas & Zach Weintraub) muddle their way through a summer research project. Deep in the Appalachian woods, they encounter a group of mystical backpackers who disrupt their lives in beautiful and surprising ways. Super Smash that play button! Indie Beat is back, baby!
This episode we have on filmmaker, programmer, and professor Brandon Colvin.
Colvin began his career with the feature film “Frames,” an Antonioni-inspired piece about a young Wisconsin filmmaker obsessed with the disappearance of one of his lead actresses. The result is a formalist, attuned mystery, as if Bresson decided to lean hard on thriller elements.

Anyone can make a movie and anyone will. The digital revolution has democratized cinema and, with it, came thousands of micro-indies. Sex was had, stars were born, dialogue was somewhat discernible. It’d be fraudulent to claim that all of these films focused on the post-college malaise of twenty-somethings, but many of the successful ones do. And while that’s fine — it’s certainly a topic that resonates with many — “Sabbatical” is a long breath of fresh air in that crowded room of independent film. A highly sophisticated, lean picture, the sophomore effort from Brandon Colvin centers on middle-aged scholar Ben (Robert Longstreet) as he returns to his childhood home to care for his ailing mother. What should be a rather quiet holiday — near perfect conditions for him to write a new book, he hopes — devolves into something more unsettling. Ben finds himself playing backyard drinking games with a highschool friend,...

Writer-director Brandon Colvin would probably be the first to admit that Sabbatical was not made for viewers with a mainstream cinematic palate. In the context of current cinema, Sabbatical is practically experimental. In the context of current cinema, Sabbatical is practically experimental. With its rigid focus on form over narrative, Sabbatical seems totally out of place and time, sharing its aesthetic sensibilities with 1960s French cinema. That said, Sabbatical is one of the most purely cinematic experiences you will find in the 4:3 aspect ratio nowadays.

With one feature under his belt, filmmaker Brandon Colvin is taking another big step forward with his next feature "Sabbatical." Boasting some big names in the cast, including Robert Longstreet ("Thou Wast Mild And Lovely," "The Catechism Cataclysm") and Thomas Jay Ryan (Hal Hartley's "Henry Fool" trilogy), the director is putting forth a very distinct aesthetic, and today we have the exclusive trailer for the film. Also featuring Rhoda Griffis, Kentucker Audley, Rebecca Koon, and Frank Mosley, "Sabbatical" centers on Ben, who returns home to care for his ill mother and to work on a new book. However, he soon finds his relationships with his mother, his brother, his ex-wife, and his high school pal tested, and he'll have to decide whether or not engage or abandon those responsibilities. "Sabbatical" will screen at the New Orleans Film Festival in October. Check out the trailer below.
