Fremantle has deepened its relationship with Artists, Writers & Artisans, Inc. (Awa) by making a minority investment in the company.
Fremantle had struck a strategic development deal with Awa Studios, the film and television division of Awa, last year.
Awa is backed by James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems, Sister, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. In 2021, the company established Awa Studios, helmed by Hollywood veteran Zach Studin as president. Marvel alum Axel Alonso serves as co-founder and chief creative officer overseeing editorial output. Matthew Anderson, co-chair and president and Jon Miller, co-founder and co-chair, lead Awa’s executive team.
The two companies have revealed that the first project on the joint development slate after Fremantle taking a stake in Awa is “Devil’s Highway,” a thriller based on the comic series by Benjamin Percy and Brent Schoonover in which a young woman seeks to unravel a sinister mystery hidden in the dark underbelly of the long-haul trucking industry.

Fremantle, the production unit of Bertelsmann-owned TV giant Rtl Group, has made a strategic minority investment in Artists, Writers & Artisans (Awa), an independent developer of stories from creative talent working across graphic fiction, film and television.
James Murdoch’s investment firm Lupa Systems, an existing Awa backer, co-led the new financial injection, which also included new capital from long-term Awa backers and “a number of strategic individual investors with expertise in production, finance, sports, human rights and technology,” the company said. Financial details and the size of the stake weren’t disclosed.
“This investment signifies a deepening of the initial partnership made between Fremantle and Awa in April 2022, which saw the companies come together to collaborate on co-developing a slate of TV projects based on Awa’s rapidly expanding IP library,” the partners said. “Awa Studios, Awa’s film and TV arm, will benefit from Fremantle’s strategic input and investment,...

Awa works across film, TV and graphic novels and Devil’s Highway – based on the comic series by Benjamin Percy and Brent Schoonover – is the first fruits of its collaboration with Fremantle, which kicked off last year with a partnership to co-develop a TV slate. The Fremantle investment revealed today will aid Awa’s film and TV arm Awa Studios with strategic input.

Never underestimate the power of a good cover. I’m not just talking about sticking a poster shot up on the front, as Marvel and DC are likely to do these days, but an actual cover that gives you a brief taster of the story, that intrigues you enough to then pick up that book. Devil’s Highway did just that, standing out from most of the other covers I was leafing through. The old school, noir style cover was intriguing enough, but the muted colours were in sharp contrast to the bright red shoe lying front and centre. Why was it there? Who’s was it? The hint that something bad may have happened is always far more effective than showing something bad happening. So hats off to Awa’s Cover Editor and Cover (and interior) Artist Brent Schoonover,...

Those who follow Hoax Hunters know that it deals with a group that claims to disprove myths and monsters on TV, when their actual goal is to cover them up. Image Comics has announced that Hoax Hunters #9 will be a special flip book issue that presents both sides of the story:
This April, the critically acclaimed Image Comics series Hoax Hunters presents a fun and unique issue that can be readily enjoyed by both current readers and new fans. Riffing on the hook of the series, where a group of “myth-busters” travel the world dispelling various lore on their reality TV show, issue #9 of Hoax Hunters presents both sides of their story. One half shows what happened on-air, what you’d see if you watched an episode; the other shows what happened behind the scenes, how the Hoax Hunters team manipulated everything—in this case, a haunted house confrontation—that...

True Blood's Michael McMillan is having a good week. Variety reports that Warner Bros. is developing Lucid, the comic book mini-series from Archaia Entertainment. Akiva Goldsman is on board to develop and produce the project. The book was created by Zachary Quinto’s production banner Before the Door, which is on board to adapt it for the big screen.
Lucid was first introduced at Comic-Con in 2009, and was described as "a tale of what would happen to Harry Potter if he grew up and joined the CIA." WB is looking for every possible replacement for the Harry Potter franchise, so this deal makes a lot of sense.
McMillian wrote the story, which was illustrated by Anna Wieszczyk. The four-book series "takes place in a parallel universe where magic is real and world leaders have secret agents working to fight off supernatural threats. Main character is a young agent, recently appointed 'Protector of the Realm,...
