The Scene 2 Seen podcast is back to regularly scheduled programming–publishing episodes on the first, second, and third Tuesday of the month unless otherwise specified.
On this episode, I discuss documentary, A Woman on the Outside. The film premiered at SXSW in March 2022, won Best Documentary Feature at the American Black Film Festival, and won Best North American Documentary Feature at the Mammoth Lakes Film Festival.
Filmed over more than four years, the story follows Kristal Bush, a young Philadelphia woman who saw nearly every man in her life disappear to prison. She goes out on the road, driving for her van service, which takes families to visit their incarcerated loved ones in prisons hundreds of miles from the city. She lives that life too – her father has been locked up most of her life, her middle brother has been in prison more than a decade, and her oldest brother...

In 1994, a documentary called Hoop Dreams set the standard by which almost all sports related documentaries set in High School. The way Steve James captured the hopes of student athletes who saw basketball as a way out of their poverty stricken existence was uncanny. Now, this week brings another doc that can boast the same thing. It’s Wrestle, a look a the same sort of teenager. Athletics play a prominent role here, but as much as anything it’s a depiction of low income life in the American south. This world often seems forgotten, but this movie shines a fascinating light on it all. The film is a documentary about a High School wrestling team, as well as the poverty that surrounds them. Set in Huntsville, Alabama, it follows a group of students at J.O. Johnson High School who see potentially their only hope for the future resting...

If you’re just as likely to cry as you are to stand up and cheer during a sports documentary (guilty), this Oscilloscope Laboratories‘ award winner may be the next film to get you out of your seat while blinking away tears. Suzannah Herbert makes her directorial debut with “Wrestle,” which was co-directed by Lauren Belfer. Both filmmakers have previously worked with Michael Moore, but this looks more in line with “Hoop Dreams” than that director’s political films.

"I had to fight my way up, and now I'm here." Oscilloscope Labs has unveiled the first official trailer for an indie documentary titled Wrestle, from co-directors Suzannah Herbert & Lauren Belfer. This doc has been winning awards all film festivals all over: Best Alabama Film and Spirit of Sidewalk Award at the Sidewalk Film Festival; Special Jury Mention at the Woodstock Film Festival; Best Sports Feature and the Audience Award at the Hot Springs Doc Film Festival; and the Maysles Brothers Award for Best Documentary at the Denver Film Festival. Wrestle is an "intimate and nuanced" film following the wrestling team at Jo Johnson High School in Huntsville, which has been on Alabama's failing schools list for many years. As they fight their way towards success at the State Championship, wrestlers Jailen, Jamario, Teague, and Jaquan, each face injustices and challenges on and off the mat. This has been described...

Oscilloscope Laboratories has picked up documentary Wrestle for North America.
Suzannah Herbert and Lauren Belfer are behind the feature, a coming-of-age documentary about four members of a high-school wrestling team at Huntsville’s J.O. Johnson High School, a longstanding entry on Alabama’s list of failing schools.
Coached by teacher Chris Scribner, teammates Jailen, Jamario, Teague and Jaquan each face challenges far beyond a shot at the State Championship: splintered family lives, drug use, teenage pregnancy, mental health struggles, and run-ins with the law threaten to derail their success on the mat and lock any doors that could otherwise open....

Exclusive: Oscilloscope Laboratories, the production and distribution company founded by Adam Yauch of Beastie Boys, has picked up the North American rights to a pair of documentaries: Wrestle, the Suzannah Herbert- and Lauren Belfer-directed film about high school wrestlers, and The Proposal, visual artist and writer Jill Magid’s directorial debut doc, which premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival. Both will get a theatrical release sometime this year.

A smaller-scaled examination of sportive influence on already-hard-knocked young lives in the mode of “Hoop Dreams” and “Friday Night Lives,” “Wrestle” trains its gaze on an underdog high school’s grappling team over one eventful season’s course. Suzannah Herbert and co-director Lauren Belfer’s documentary spends at least as much time on the protagonists’ stormy personal lives as it does on their athletic training and competition. Their disparate struggles remind that the “land of opportunity” is no level playing field: Those from broken homes and poorer communities with underfunded educational systems face a much steeper climb than the more fortunate. This engrossing snapshot has a good shot at exposure beyond the festival circuit, with public television being a logical destination.
