Disney has tapped Tony Award-winning director Michael Grandage to serve as the new director of the Broadway adaptation of Frozen, Variety reports.
Grandage will replace original director Alex Timbers, who left the production in August. While no specifics for the change were given at the time, Disney Theatrical Productions President and producer Thomas Schumacher said the decision "was especially painful" and "we have chosen to go in another direction with this role" (Timbers previously helmed Disney's Peter and the Starcatcher).

Frozen may have come out last year, but if 2014 was any indication, we’re never going to let it go, let it goooooo. We’re never going to let that pun go either. Anyway, Frozen was 2014’s biggest selling DVD and best selling album on iTunes, became a two-time Oscar winner, and inspired everything from toys to theme park rides to wedding dresses.

It could be the least surprising movie news in years, but a sequel to Frozen is “in the works,” says Idina Menzel, the voice of Elsa in the Oscar-winning and highest-grossing animated film of all time and singer of the film’s insanely popular theme song, Let It Go.
Before the news of a Frozen sequel gets you all hot and bothered, it’s important to note that sources close to the original project deny a sequel is indeed in the works.
Menzel was quoted deep in a lengthy profile with UK-based newspaper The Telegraph saying the sequel and a stage musical (another, previously announced and also obvious extension of the brand for Disney) were being created. Here are the key lines from the Telegraph story:
What can Menzel tell us of those plans?
“That they’re all in the works, ha ha!”
Is she signed up for them all?...

As soon as Frozen became a "Let It Go"–powered hit animated movie, it was obvious that Disney would eventually develop it into a stage musical. While a date has not yet been announced for the Frozen show, it's in early stages of development and will likely be a hit, just like many of the titles that Disney Theatrical president Thomas Schumacher has helped bring to the stage. John Horn, host of Southern California Public Radio's new daily arts and entertainment show "The Frame," talked to Schumacher about a new production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which is currently playing in La Jolla, California, and about how Broadway has changed in the two decades Schumacher has held his position. (Listen to part of Horn and Schumacher's interview below, and subscribe to "The Frame" at iTunes or Stitcher.)How many Disney theatrical productions are there running right now around the world?...

New York -- It has been exactly 20 years since Disney announced its arrival on the Broadway scene with Disney Theatrical Productions' Beauty and the Beast (1994-2007). Right from the get-go, the theater community, which can barely agree on the day of the week, seemed to agree on one thing: however entertaining the Mouse House's stage ventures might be, they represented a dark turn for the Great White Way, towards corporatization and away from originality. Over the years between 1994 and the start of 2014, Disney Theatrical, for all but the first years under the oversight of Thomas Schumacher,

Fully realizing its underdog appeal, the cheeky musical A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder slayed the competition this morning with a whopping 10 Tony nominations, including nods for both of its tireless leading men, Jefferson Mays and Bryce Pinkham. Neil Patrick Harris’ return to Broadway after a decade yielded him his first-ever Tony nomination for the celebrated revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which netted an impressive eight nods. (Had it been eligible as a new musical, Hedwig probably would have easily tied Guide, as score and book would have been slam dunks). Trailing these shows with seven...

A stage adaptation of "The Princess Bride" is no longer inconceivable: Disney is developing the beloved classic for the theater.
Variety reports that the production is being spearheaded by Disney studio chief Alan Horn, who became involved with the 1987 film during his tenure at Castle Rock Entertainment. The project is still in its infancy -- there are currently no casting or timeline announcements -- so it's unclear whether it will be a play or a musical.
This staging is completely separate from a failed musical adaptation that was in the works several years ago. That production was scuttled after a rights dispute between "The Princess Bride" author William Goldman -- who also adapted his book for the big screen -- and composer Adam Guettel ("The Light in the Piazza").
Goldman will work alongside Disney Theatrical Productions on the new adaptation.

There’s a seemingly endless parade of movies being turned into musicals; particularly Disney’s titles, which are, after all, usually well suited to the transition. Here, though comes word on two titanic brands considering a stage invasion: the Muppets and Jackie Chan. Not together, of course (though wouldn’t you pay to see that stage show? We would!), but the plans are bubbling away on separate fronts.Let’s start with Kermit and co who, since the Mouse House wholly owns them, may make the natural leap to the stage thanks to Disney Theatrical Productions. It’s early days for plans on that front, but according to Variety, Dtp held a short presentation showcase featuring a few classic songs and the main Muppeteers fresh from working on The Muppets… Again!Labelled a test of concept, the show at Disney’s New Amsterdam Theatre in New York included several sets and 85 characters,...

Thomas Schumacher would like you to embrace that sippy cup. You know that clinking of ice cubes you hear in the audience while you’re performing your heart out onstage? Yeah, that’s the sound of progress. Schumacher, the president of Disney Theatrical Group (and an advocate for audience members taking beverages to their seats), spoke Jan. 28 at TEDxBroadway and challenged an audience of artists and influencers to welcome new demographics to the theater. But how does Broadway gain new audiences? The second annual TEDx event, which took place at New World Stages, challenged its speakers and attendees to consider the question, “What is the best Broadway can be?” From Erin Hoover, the vice president of design for Westin and Sheraton Hotels, discussing hospitality to Randi Zuckerberg (yes, that Zuckerberg), CEO of Zuckerberg Media, advocating for social media to Seth Pinksy, president of NYC’s Economic Development Corporation, presenting the financial benefits,...
