Exclusive: BET+’s Sundance Film Festival acquisition Young.Wild.Free. has dropped its official trailer (above) ahead of its streaming premiere on June 27. The feature starring Sanaa Lathan, Mike Epps, Algee Smith and Sierra Capri is directed by Thembi L. Banks.
Young.Wild.Free. follows Algee Smith (Brandon Huffman), a hot-tempered high school senior whose claustrophobic life is suddenly thrust into an enticing, dangerous direction after he’s robbed at gunpoint by the girl of his dreams, Cassidy (Sierra Capri).
Being a teenager is rough and Brandon is no different. Between struggling in school, caring for his two younger siblings, and having just been let go from his job, he often uses his art as an escape from the confines of his subdued day-to-day life. Enter Cassidy, a bedazzled bad girl dripping in confidence, freedom, and danger. Lured in by her whimsies, Brandon teams up with Cassidy, seamlessly slipping into the role...

The Sci-Fi genre consists of some of the most inventive and life-changing films because by the very definition of the word the creators have to invent a fictional future or technology and while some of the films in this genre give us spectacle others give us a story that makes us think about the future and how our world is changing for better or for worse. So, today we thought of listing the best new sci-fi films you can watch at home right now and in this list, we didn’t include any film released before 2023.

Fill the cannons with stuffed animals and watch the fluff fly as Eli Roth’s Borderlands takes the Lionsgate stage at CinemaCon! The annual entertainment event is in full swing after yesterday’s Warner Bros. panel and reveal of Todd Phillips’s Joker: Folie à Deux trailer. With film and television fans fired up about upcoming releases, Lionsgate is ready to take them to a wasteland where kooky characters try to kill each other, and a fabled vault of riches awaits.
The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin wrote the initial screenplay for Borderlands but removed his name from the project after the script was rewritten by Roth, Juel Taylor, Tony Rettenmaier, Joe Crombie, Chris Bremner, and Sam Levinson. Zak Olkewicz wrote scenes for Miller during the reshoots. Elements from drafts Aaron Berg and Oren Uziel wrote before Mazin have reportedly made their way into the film as well. So...

Cate Blanchett will play the lead, Lilith, in the film adaptation of the Western-themed looter-shooter game, Borderlands. The trailer for the film dropped on Wednesday and fans couldn’t help but notice the similarity to James Gunn’s films. While the cast appears to be promising, there were several behind-the-scene issues with the film which fans doubt will affect the film’s quality. One particular promotion in the trailer for the producer of the film also irked the fans.

The film is produced by Avi Arad and Erik Feig under their production houses, Arad Productions and Picturestart. Arad served as the producer of several superhero films in the past and most of his recent projects were distributed by Sony.

Filming wrapped on director Eli Roth‘s adaptation of the Borderlands video game series from Gearbox and 2K way back in June of 2021. A year and a half later, Deadpool director Tim Miller had to step in to handle the project’s two weeks of reshoots because Roth had the chance to finally – after sixteen years – make a feature based on the Thanksgiving faux trailer he put together for the Quentin Tarantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse. The Borderlands reshoots have been completed, Thanksgiving has come and gone, and Lionsgate is now gearing up to finally release Borderlands into the world on August 9th. With just over five months to go until that date arrives, Lionsgate has unveiled a trailer for the film, and you can check that out in the embed above.

[This story contains spoilers for They Cloned Tyrone.]
They Cloned Tyrone filmmaker Juel Taylor is the latest recipient of Guillermo del Toro’s storied generosity.
Whether it’s providing script notes to Charlie Day or putting in a good word for André Øvredal, there are countless tales of del Toro looking out for his filmmaking peers. And Taylor, who previously co-wrote Creed II, now has his own unforgettable anecdote in regard to They Cloned Tyrone, his critically acclaimed directorial debut that Netflix released opposite Barbie and Oppenheimer on July 21.
Towards the end of the film (spoilers ahead), Fontaine (John Boyega) and Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx) devise a plan to infiltrate the underground organization that’s been conducting sinister experiments on their neighborhood, the Glen. And Taylor intended to capture their elaborate scheme through an Ocean’s Eleven-like montage that cleverly revealed the mechanics of their mission. However, Netflix found the initial sequence to be a bit convoluted,...

When They Cloned Tyrone is one of the year’s most fiercely original works, it is disheartening how it is doomed to be buried by a terrible algorithm which prioritises the latest works by transphobic comedians and the many acquisitions which sullied the term “Netflix Original.”

Teyonah Parris has stepped into plenty of shoes in her career — from “Dear White People” and “Mad Men” to “If Beale Street Could Talk” and, more recently, as Marvel superhero Monica Rambeau. But no shoes quite compare to the mustard yellow, thigh-high boots and chaps she wore as Yo-Yo in Netflix’s new pulpy conspiracy caper “They Cloned Tyrone.”
“The minute I put on all those elements, I felt Yo-Yo,” Parris told Variety at a press junket for the film in late June.
Parris laughed brightly as she recalls slipping into the role — a working girl who teams up with Fontaine (John Boyega), a local dope boy, and her pimp, Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx), to expose a government conspiracy that touches every corner of their community, from the barbershop and the beauty salon to the local fried chicken joint.

At first glance, They Cloned Tyrone seems to find John Boyega on well-trodden ground. For the first 20 minutes of the Netflix release, Boyega’s face never changes from a hardened scowl as his character Fontaine goes through his day. Fontaine’s actions will seem familiar to anyone who’s heard an “urban” narrative, as Hollywood once often called them; Tyrone buys a 40 and some scratch-offs, he beats up a competitor on his corner, and he threatens a pimp who owes him money.
More than the generic constraints of Fontaine’s day, however, viewers may recognize elements of Boyega’s breakout character from more than a decade ago now in the unrepentant drug dealer he plays in Tyrone. Moviegoers first met Boyega as Moses in the British science-fiction comedy Attack the Block (2011), a film directed by Joe Cornish. As Moses, the leader of a gaggle of latchkey kids who defend their...

Spoiler alert: This article breaks down the plot and characters in “They Cloned Tyrone.”
John Boyega got his first opportunity to play multiple roles in one project with “They Cloned Tyrone,” a moment the British actor says had him in his “Eddie Murphy bag.”
“They Cloned Tyrone,” co-written by Juel Taylor and his writing partner Tony Rettenmaier, was the first time Taylor got to sit in the director’s chair for a feature film. The movie also provided Boyega with a career first of his own: the opportunity to play different characters in a sole project.
“It was fun, [I ] obviously approached all of them as individuals, and just made sure you’re consistently speaking to your director, so you don’t get them twisted,” Boyega said, whose character in film, Fontaine, has been cloned several times by the government.
“Yeah, I do good improvisations at home, in front of the family,...

Jamie Foxx seems to finally be on the mend, with him posting a video on Instagram that – for the first time – addresses the health challenge that sidelined him for months. You can see the video below, but Foxx, while not getting into specifics, says he went to “hell and back”, but also throws cold water on some of the rumors, notably that he went blind and became paralyzed. “Now, you know, by being quiet sometimes things get out of hand. People saying what I got, some people said I was blind, but as you can see … the eyes are working just fine. Said I’m paralyzed — I’m not paralyzed.” Foxx also thanked his family and doctors for not only supporting him, but also allowing him privacy from the media as he fought to regain his health. In America today, no one has a lock on conspiracy theory. It has become the air we breathe, the Kool-Aid we drink, the rabbit-hole ideology that defines too many of us. Yet conspiracy theories come in different shapes and sizes. Many are false, some are true. Many are bat-house crazy, some are more than plausible. All, in one way or another, work as metaphors: for the forces that collude in hiding things from us, for the sinister tantalizing truth that we aren’t allowed to see.
“They Cloned Tyrone” is a slow-burn inner-city sci-fi nightmare thriller, one that plays off the spirit of conspiracy theory that has often thrived — with justification — within Black culture. The Tuskegee experiment was a conspiracy that happened; its horrific impact on the hearts and minds of African-Americans is beyond measure. And in the 1970s, the belief that the CIA, linked by the war in Vietnam...

“A pimp, a ho, and a drug dealer walk into a bar,” says one character in They Cloned Tyrone, writer-director Juel Taylor’s conspiracy thriller/comedy/cautionary tale. It should be noted that the person making this statement is white, racist as hell, and works for a shady branch of the government that you won’t find on the books anywhere. ‘They Cloned Tyrone‘ is directed by Juel Taylor and stars John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, and Jamie Foxx.
This comedy blends absurd humor and government conspiracies, relying heavily on the charisma of its main trio.
And you know what? They deliver, especially Jamie Foxx.
Plot
A drug dealer, a pimp, and a prostitute stumble upon a government conspiracy to manipulate social behavior.
Movie Review
A tribute to 70s cinema in the purest “Pulp” style. This movie could have easily become a forgettable parody, but instead, it asserts its worth through visual elements.
They Cloned Tyrone
No, it’s not “art-house cinema” nor a film for niche audiences. It’s a highly entertaining comedy with extravagant dialogues that, through surrealism and farcical situations, reflects on more serious matters while maintaining a comedic tone without delving into social criticism.
Above all, it’s a very enjoyable film that owes much to the excellent performances of the actors and,...

What happens when you mix wild conspiracy theories, slick-talking characters, and the retro feel of the Blaxploitation era into one sweeping film? Well, you get the time-defying, genre-bending adventure "They Cloned Tyrone" - which stars John Boyega, Jamie Foxx, and Teyonah Parris as an oddball trio in Juel Taylor's risky directorial debut. The sci-fi comedy's freaky plot works to its advantage, though, as it takes viewers on a journey unlike anything you'd ever expect.
"They Cloned Tyrone" follows the stoic Fontaine (Boyega), a local hustler too stuck in his daily routine to notice strange things happening in his around-the-way neighborhood, The Glen. That is until a fatal encounter exposes a cloning experiment that Fontaine, his fast-talking pimp associate Slick Charles (Foxx), and sassy working girl Yo-Yo (Parris) must get to the bottom of. Juel Taylor’s They Cloned Tyrone is a satirical science-fiction story styled as a Blaxploitation film. Set in the gritty world of The Glen, this odd-throuple comedy stars John Boyega as Fontaine, a small-time drug dealer whose days play out in the same dreary cycle of events: He stumbles out of bed, does a little business, hits the local liquor store, and does whatever he has to do to keep his rivals in check and make sure his customers pay on time.
There’s a grainy quality to the way that Taylor’s feature-length directorial debut has been shot that allows it to stand apart from just about every other Netflix original film. It’s also in the way that the sickly yellow and green lights of the environments that barely brighten the seedy motel rooms and dilapidated homes always seem as if they’re being glimpsed through a fog.

Plot: A series of eerie events thrusts an unlikely trio onto the trail of a nefarious government conspiracy in this pulpy mystery caper.
Review: Certain filmmakers come along that define a style of movie-making that turns their name into a descriptor. In recent years, Jordan Peele has become the benchmark against which many genre films have been compared, especially when they focus on the Black experience. Storytellers like Donald Glover and Boots Riley have come close to earning similar name recognition as Peele. Now, we can add Juel Taylor to the list. They Cloned Tyrone, Taylor’s directorial debut, is a smart science fiction tale wrapped in a comedic allegory that blends blaxploitation with a contemporary flair for a truly unique movie. With yet another stellar leading turn by John Boyega, They Cloned Tyrone showcases great turns from Jamie Foxx and Teyonah Parris for the weirdest movie of the summer.

‘They Cloned Tyrone’ Review: John Boyega, Teyonah Parris & Jamie Foxx In Grim But Gutsy Genre Mashup
Rather resembling a blaxploitation-based cousin of Invasion of the Body Snatchers with a deeper sense of social consciousness, They Cloned Tyrone is a predominately grim yet intriguing account of constrained, little-hope lives victimized even further by nefarious secret attempts to transform them into obedient, well-behaved zombies. Set in what appears to be the late ‘60s-early ‘70s based on the period cars, outfits and outlandish hairstyles, Juel Taylor’s feature directorial debut, which he wrote with Tony Rettenmaier, delivers live-wire performances from the young cast but nonetheless remains notably dire, even forlorn in its depiction of small-town lives momentarily confronted with a bizarre enemy found right in their midst. This Netflix offering opens theatrically July 14 for a week prior to its move to home tubes July 21.

Growing up in South London, “They Cloned Tyrone” star John Boyega would sit on his mattress watching Jamie Foxx act up on “The Jamie Foxx Show” or his Oscar-winning portrayal of Ray Charles in “Ray.” So, getting the opportunity to team up with Foxx for the conspiracy caper “They Cloned Tyrone,” was a dream come true.
“That’s someone that I’m very much inspired by,” Boyega told Variety on the red carpet at the American Black Film Festival, where the Netflix movie was the opening night selection. “He’s definitely been one of the major hands behind my career that helped me to get roles, get opportunities and I appreciate it.”
Of course, Boyega has come a long way from watching movies and TV in his bedroom. After breaking onto the scene in “Attack the Block” and then playing Finn in the latest “Star Wars” trilogy,” Boyega has starred...

If Netflix were a theatrical studio, we’d say that they were releasing the trailer for “They Cloned Tyrone” to be attached to opening weekend prints of “Extraction 2,” which has been in very limited theatrical release since last weekend and debuts on streaming this Friday. Offering the latest look at the next “big” Netflix original concurrently with the launch of the most recent biggie is pretty par for the course.
“They Cloned Tyrone” is the directorial debut of Juel Taylor, who previously wrote or co-wrote films like “Creed II,” “Space Jam: A New Legacy” and the recently-released (on Peacock) LeBron James biopic “Shooting Stars.” This Black List script, penned by Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier (who also shares credit with Taylor on the two LeBron James-specific titles) looks to have become a peppy caper-ish genre throwback. There’s a point when a movie starts dropping too many references to other movies that the enthusiasm gets a little suspicious. In director Thembi L. Banks’ debut feature “Young. Wild. Free.”— the title styled as such for no reason in particular — a mysterious woman with “Euphoria” eye-makeup named Cassidy (Sierra Capri) suddenly starts spouting them with abandon about 30 minutes in. “Did you know this is the diner from ‘Reservoir Dogs?,'” she says while digging into some pancakes at the diner from “Reservoir Dogs.” Over the course of the rest of the film’s running time, she proceeds to name drop “Dazed and Confused,” “Unforgiven,” and “Kill Bill.” Something is up.

In Thembi Banks’ “Young. Wild. Free.,” a visually confident, shape-shifting yet sometimes wandering coming-of-age tale, nothing comes easy to Los Angeles teen Brandon. Carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders at home and school, he is on the final day of his employment when we first meet him in the back office of a grimy burger joint. As his unsympathetic boss fires him bluntly, with a side of mockery, we pick up that Brandon has been involved in an altercation, and is thus being shown the door. It’s a scene that Banks orchestrates with vibrant and stylish intrigue.
Tasteful, vivid colors permeate “Young. Wild. People frequently refer to “an incident” in their conversations with him,...

After waiting for over two years, we finally have our first look at John Boyega's latest foray into sci-fi with "They Cloned Tyrone." The former Black List script has finally been adapted into feature-length, and thank goodness it has because this new trailer showcases some wild stuff.
The trailer showcases our unlikely band of heroes coming together. You've got Fontaine (Boyega), Yo-Yo (Teyonah Parris), and Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx), bound only by happenstance after they discover a bizarre secret in their city.
What kind of secret do they discover? While the true extent of it will likely not be revealed until the film's release, let's just say it's the type that involves human experimentation and bizarre technologies. While it's pretty clear the trio can't stand each other, they must put their differences beside them in order to save their city from this danger. If this isn't sci-fi throwback pulp,...
