“Hit Man” is a smart comedy under the adept direction of Richard Linklater, starring the talented Glen Powell and Adria Arjona. What starts as a classic, seemingly silly comedy gradually transforms into a thriller with depth and psychological undertones. This film masterfully flips the script on clichéd narratives and evolves into an intelligent comedy with key messages, boasting two outstanding performances from Glen Powell and Adria Arjona.
The premise involves Gary Johnson, who moonlights for the police department until he’s given a unique assignment: pose as a hitman to unmask those opting for such services. The plot thickens as a charming woman seeks to employ his services, and Gary, smitten, begins a romantic entanglement with her while continuing his hitman facade.

Last weekend had something for everyone with a stacked roster of streaming shows and a blockbuster family film in theaters. According to IMDb data, Prime Video’s “The Boys” and Disney/Pixar’s ‘Inside Out 2’ saw the most traffic of any titles from Friday, June 14 through Sunday, June 16. “The Boys” returned for their highly anticipated fourth season with three new episodes that dropped on Thursday, June 13. Meanwhile at the box office, ‘Inside Out 2’ became the first film since last year’s ‘Barbie’ to score a weekend debut over $100 million. The most popular names on the site told a slightly different story, but looking at the top 10 titles and names during that time period provided a glimpse of what to expect in the coming weeks.
Top 10 Titles
1. The Boys
2. Inside Out 2
3. Bridgerton
4. House of the Dragon
5. The Acolyte
6. Hit Man
7. Presumed Innocent
8. Space Cadet
9. Bad Boys: Ride or Die
10. Inside Out
Top 10 Names
1. Nicola Coughlan
2. Glen Powell
3. Adria Arjona
4. Claudia Jessie
5. Laz Alonso
6. Andrew McCarthy
7. Valorie Curry
8. Erin Moriarty
9. Antony Starr
10. Luke Newton
The top titles list was split evenly between shows and movies, with returning series “The Boys” and “Bridgerton” leading the way. But “House of the Dragon” was right there with them, a notable achievement considering the list only captured traffic from a single day (the Season 2 premiere date on Sunday). Interesting outliers included the upcoming Prime Video movie ‘Space Cadet,’ which dropped its first trailer last week, and the first ‘Inside Out’ movie made it onto the list, riding the wave of interest in the sequel.
The top names on IMDb were mostly consistent with the top titles, but with some interesting twists. “Bridgerton” and “The Boys” cast members represented 7 of the top 10 names, as expected. But interest in ‘Hit Man’ stars Glen Powell and Adria Arjona was still high, and only Nicola Coughlan of “Bridgerton” was more popular on the site than the ‘Hit Man’ leads. Finally, the appearance of Andrew McCarthy may seem like a glitch if you haven’t heard of his new documentary ‘Brats,’ which premiered on Hulu on June 13. In it, the actor reconnects with members of the Brat Pack, the cohort of young actors who starred in many iconic teen movies of the 1980s.
Looking ahead to the coming weeks, without the release of any tentpole titles in theaters, popular shows will likely dominate the list. “Game Of Thrones” spin-off “House of the Dragon” will certainly send some of its cast members into the top 10. Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke are shoo-ins, but it’s possible we’ll see Eve Best (Princess Rhaenys), Ewan Mitchell (Prince Aemond), or Matt Smith (Daemon) make the list. In the first week of the new season, “The Boys” stars Laz Alonso and Valorie Curry were the top names from the show, ranking above the more established stars. It’s likely there will be some movement in the top names list as the season plays out.

Glen Powell’s Hit Man has just been the most recent addition to the filmography of Richard Linklater. Over the years, he has gained a reputation for creating masterpieces, in the form of projects like the Before trilogy, Boyhood, and Dazed and Confused. Having been such a prominent figure in Hollywood, it is safe to say that he understands how the industry works, and this isn’t always a good thing.

The film has gained quite a lot of attention since its release. With its 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and stellar audience reviews, many have wondered why the filmmaker chose to release the movie on a streaming platform directly.
During a recent interview, he revealed his reasoning for this, and it would seem that, in his eyes, big studios are to blame.

Adria Arjona says she was destined for pop stardom. She dreamed of becoming the next Beyoncé or Britney Spears as she crisscrossed the Americas with her father, the Guatemalan singer Ricardo Arjona, watching him serenade audiences with Latin pop ballads. Her home became a hotel room. She jetted between tour dates and stood backstage cheering him on. There was only one thing missing from her supersized expectations:
“I can’t sing,” Arjona says. “So, that was not in the books for me.”
Instead, Arjona has paved her own path in Hollywood.

In a recent interview, Richard Linklater, the visionary behind Hit Man, candidly revealed his perspective on the current state of Hollywood. The acclaimed director, known for his iconic works like Boyhood and Before Midnight, discussed his latest venture which revisits classic film noir themes. The Evolution of Femme Fatales The concept of the femme fatale has been a staple in cinema since films like Double Indemnity. Here, Barbara Stanwyck’s Phyllis Dietrichson epitomized the seductive and scheming villainess. In contrast, Linklater’s Hit Man presents Maddy Masters (Adria Arjona) as a more conflicted character. Speaking on this shift, Linklater said, We’re moving...

We will have to wait a while for the final chapter of the Andor story. Series creator Tony Gilroy hinted in February 2023 that the series would return in 2024.
However, it was later revealed that Disney+ does not plan to drop the show in 2024, and the second season will not be released until 2025. The new chapter of Andor was removed from the 2024 release schedule largely due to the Hollywood strikes.
Adria Arjona Shared Some Details About Andor Season 2

If there was ever any uncertainty about Glen Powell’s rise to stardom, his performance in Netflix’s “Hit Man” extinguishes it. Following his roles in blockbuster hits like “Top Gun: Maverick” and the rom-com “Anyone But You,” Powell’s portrayal in Richard Linklater’s latest film solidifies his standing. Moving from action to drama is very rare, said Adria Arjona, highlighting the unique genre blend of the project. Criminal is an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker and Sean Phillips.

Much like a seven-foot-tall man becoming a basketball player whether he likes it or not, Chester was drafted into the criminal life for his size and fearsomeness. Hits from the weekend
Streaming movies and shows made up the majority of the top five titles this past weekend, based on traffic to their IMDb pages. That’s thanks to a trio of Netflix titles and the new Star Wars series, “The Acolyte.” In theaters, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s fourth installment in the Bad Boys franchise delivered Hollywood a much-needed box office win, while ‘The Watchers’—the mystery-horror film starring Dakota Fanning—drew enough interest to land in the top 10.
By the time ‘Hit Man’ dropped on Netflix, movie fans were probably well aware of who Glen Powell was, but the popularity of the comedic action film brought more IMDb users’ attention to co-star Adria Arjona and director Richard Linklater. If Arjona looked familiar to viewers, it’s likely from several supporting roles in other streaming hits like “Good Omens,” “Andor,” and ‘6 Underground’ with Ryan Reynolds.
It’s not often that directors crack the top five (or even top 10) names on IMDb, but viewers were clearly interested to know more about Richard Linklater, the versatile and irreverent director of indie films like ‘Slacker’ and ‘Dazed and Confused,’ who also found mainstream recognition with ‘School of Rock.’
Also big on Netflix were the French killer shark movie ‘Under Paris’ and the Benedict Cumberbatch miniseries “Eric,” which released all six episodes two weeks ago. Elsewhere in streaming, “The Acolyte” has had no trouble finding its audience on Disney+. According to Disney, the show drew 4.8 million viewers on its first day, making it the streamer’s biggest hit of 2024 to date. Amandla Stenberg and Dafne Keen were in the top five names on IMDb, and both will likely remain popular through the show’s first season, which ends on July 16.
What’s in store for the coming week?
Expect next weekend to be all about “The Boys,” the raunchy comic book adaptation from showrunner Eric Kripke. The first three episodes of Season 4 arrive Thursday (6/13) on Prime Video, with new episodes dropping weekly. Returning cast members Karl Urban, Antony Starr, and Erin Moriarty will likely climb IMDb’s STARmeter, but a few new supes on the scene could put some breakouts in the spotlight, such as Valorie Curry (playing Firecracker) or Susan Heyward (as Sister Sage).
In theaters, Disney and Pixar’s animated ‘Inside Out 2’ is a shoo-in to win next weekend’s box office, though it may not have the same interest on IMDb as the streaming releases. The original voice cast of emotions are returning, but it’s more likely one of the newcomers will spike in popularity, like Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) as Anxiety, Ayo Edibiri (“The Bear”) as Envy, or Paul Walter Houser (‘I, Tonya,’ ‘Richard Jewell’) as Embarrassment.

The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi may have delved deeper into Star Wars lore than Andor did, yet the series starring Adria Arjona still soared to impressive heights of critical adoration upon its 2022 premiere on Disney+. And it seems the stars align with the promise of the second season, especially with the recent tempting hints dropped by Arjona, our very own Bix Caleen.
Her words ring with intrigue; the second season, which could premiere next year, is expected to outperform the first in terms of scale and intelligence. Similar sentiments were also expressed by Tony Gilroy, the mastermind behind this epic tale. In a recent interview with the New York Times, Arjona framed her excitement for the next season, saying it will be even “bigger” and “smarter” than the previous one.

It’s a romantic comedy thriller with winning performances from Glen Powell and Adria Arjona. But isn’t there also darkness in Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, Ryan wonders…?
Nb: The following contains spoilers for Hit Man and 2005’s A History Of Violence.
As two lovers gaze into one another’s eyes, solemnly devoting their lives to one another, the body of a man lies on the floor. There’s a plastic bag over his head, and he’s fighting for breath. In a few seconds, the man will be dead and the lovers will kiss.
It’s a bold, extraordinarily dark turning point in an otherwise glossy romantic comedy-thriller.

It’s always been clear from watching Richard Linklater films that the auteur — who rose to fame during the independent film movement of the ‘90s and stands as one of the modern masters of American cinema — is fascinated by time. Not just the practical application of it, nor just the passage, but the true essence of it. How does one capture childhood? What about the teen years and college? What does it look like to compress these into one vs. focusing in on one moment? These are questions Linklater has answered, but a question the audience should be asking in return is why does Linklater use his films to make these studies?
I believe the answer lies in the history of film itself and what it has given Linklater, in terms of inspiration and influence, but also in terms of how the art form...

Exclusive: Gus Halper (Rustin), Aliyah Camacho (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Michael Mando (Better Call Saul) have joined the cast of Prime Video‘s graphic novel series, Criminal, in recurring roles. They join the previously announced cast of Charlie Hunnam, Adria Arjona, Richard Jenkins, Kadeem Hardison, Logan Browning, Pat Healy, Taylor Selé and John Hawkes.
Criminal is an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker and Sean Phillips.

As of this writing, a Richard Linklater film holds the number one spot on Netflix's Top 10 chart. Considering the genre-spanning nature of the writer/director's versatile career, this outcome wasn't necessarily a given, but according to FlixPatrol, a site that tracks the popularity of titles on streaming services, "Hit Man" debuted this past Friday and has been number one in the U.S. every day since.
Linklater might be the best director in the country at making pure hang-out movies. He excels at crafting compelling characters, dropping them into easy-going situations, and giving the audience the experience of spending a couple of hours with them as they amble through international cities (the "Before" trilogy), experience the ups and downs of growing up ("Boyhood"), make their way through the last day of school ("Dazed and Confused"), or get to know their college baseball teammates ("Everybody Wants Some!!"). It’s a “Hot Glen Summer” at the movies.
Just like the immortal words of Megan Thee Stallion, who’s billed every summer since 2019 the perfect time to do “hot girl shit,” Glen Powell is heating up movie screens. Summer 2024 firmly establishes him as a power player with Netflix’s “Hit Man,” the Prime Video documentary “The Blue Angels” and Universal “Twisters” dropping in rapid succession.
In the words of Retta — who first met Powell on the 2014 indie rom-com “Sex Ed” before they reunited for “Hit Man” — “Homie is a straight up movie star.”
“This is the summer of Glen,” director Richard Linklater concurs. “They’re all ‘Johnny come lately’ to the Glen Powell thing. Anybody who’s known Glen for the last 10-plus years knows that he’s a star. He’s smart. He’s funny. He’s hard working.”

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for the ending of “Hit Man.”]
“Hit Man” debuted on Netflix as #1 on its most-watched list, which means the ending may have shocked millions of people this weekend. After all, it’s not exactly a staple of the romantic comedy that the couple the audience is rooting for kills a cop in order to be together. But that’s “Hit Man,” a film that cross-pollinates a sexy screwball comedy with a noir like “Double Indemnity.”
The film is sort-of based on a true story, although the real Gary Johnson (Glen Powell) didn’t kill anyone. However, director Richard Linklater told IndieWire that once he and Powell (they co-wrote the screenplay) came up with that ending, it was never really questioned.
“I think the ending has to be inevitable,” said Linklater. “And it’s kind of the thesis of the movie.”
As the end credits detail, the real-life Johnson did work with the police and...

John Hawkes has been one of my favorite character actors since he first came to my attention back in the ’90s with roles in films like Roadracers, Night of the Scarecrow, From Dusk Till Dawn, and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, so it’s cool to hear (from Deadline) that he’s going directly from a multi-episode role in the latest season of True Detective to landing a recurring role in the Prime Video series adaptation of Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips. Hawkes, along with Pat Healy (Better Call Saul), Taylor Selé (Bmf), and Logan Browning (Dear White People), join previously announced cast members Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Adria Arjona (Hit Man), Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water), and Kadeem Hardison (A Different World).

Why doesn’t Netflix make movies like Hit Man anymore? Directed by Richard Linklater, known for classics like School of Rock and Boyhood, this new comedy is a breath of fresh air in today’s film landscape. A Wild Plot That Thrills Hit Man stars Glen Powell as a philosophy professor turned pretend-assassin in police sting operations. The movie takes a turn when Adria Arjona’s character, a domestic abuse victim, attempts to hire him to kill her husband. This leads them into a deeply complex and morally grey relationship. Adria Arjona felt that her contributions to 'Hit Man' were valued. The 32-year-old star features opposite Glen Powell in the romantic action comedy and praised director Richard Linklater for taking her creative input into account.Speaking to The New York Times newspaper, Adria said: "I'd never worked with Rick, but I've always loved how actors in his movies had all this beautiful, philosophical, intellectual, banter that felt improvised. And then I met Rick, and he hates improv."Every decision is made in a rehearsal, so once you get to set it makes the process a lot more fun. He really made me believe my ideas were important – that I had good ideas – and a lot of them ended up in the movie."Adria was also grateful that her thoughts on the intimate scenes between her character Madison Masters and Powell's alter ego Gary Johnson were considered by the crew.

Puerto Rican actress Adria Arjona has starred in several big-budget movies in the last decade. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Arjona was raised in Mexico City until age 12. Although she moved to the United States at 12, she has always had a passion for acting. Unsurprisingly, after moving to New York City at 18, she studied acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. With growing movie credits, Adria Arjona plays Madison Figueroa Masters, Glen Powell’s love interest in the 2023 romantic black comedy Hit Man. “Hit Man” director Richard Linklater knew Glen Powell was a movie star the moment the young actor, with no profile, walked in to audition for “Everybody Wants Some” almost a decade ago. Linklater explained that what makes Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio movie stars goes beyond their good looks and acting ability, but is rooted their charisma and how we are drawn to them.
“You look at Brad Pitt, ‘Oh, I want to hang out with him,’” said Linklater. “They attract you, you’ll follow them somewhere. You want to be wherever, whatever they’re doing. Some personalities have that quality, most don’t… Glen does.”
Linklater would need every ounce of Powell’s star power to pull off “Hit Man,” a sexy screwball comedy in which the audience is rooting for Madison (Adria Arjona) and Powell’s Ron to be together, but who do some questionable things to get their happy ending.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Hit Man.] Hit Man is the movie everyone is talking about. In his latest dynamite role, Glen Powell stars as Gary Johnson, a college professor who becomes a fake hitman for the local police department. He takes down would-be criminals who have their eyes on murder. Gary’s life gets turned upside down when he meets a beautiful “client” named Madison (Adria Arjona), who wants him to kill her estranged husband. They quickly get caught up in a passionate affair. But here’s the catch: Madison falls for Ron, one of Gary’s debonair hitman personas. Gary’s secret gets out, but these two just can’t stay away from each other. After some much-needed confessions and intense hijinks, Madison and Gary get their happily ever after. Since they make such a great team, much to the credit of Powell and Arjona’s electric ...

Hollywood star Glen Powell’s recent career graph seems to be an indicator that the actor could become the next big superstar in the industry. Netflix and Richard Linklater certainly make for peculiar bedfellows. Where every other Netflix exclusive feels like it was concocted by an algorithm and designed to have maximum appeal, Linklater has been perfectly happy to direct films for a niche market these past 30-plus years. Even at his most commercial, with a film like "School of Rock," you get the sense the eccentric Texan auteur is making movies that speaks to his interests first and foremost.
Yet, somehow, Linklater has now found himself releasing back-to-back films for the streaming giant. The first of them, 2022's "Apollo 10 1⁄2: A Space Age Childhood" — a rotoscope-style animated feature where segments inspired by the filmmaker's real childhood in 1960s Houston are seamlessly integrated with a fictional story about a young boy being recruited by NASA for an off-the-books space mission — reads like the opposite of what studios feel constitutes an easy sell. How often do you see a film that doesn’t put a foot wrong? I’m talking about Richard Linklater’s Hit Man here, which is, by far, the most exciting film that I’ve seen in recent times. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that there’s not a single dull second in this dark comedy, which is co-produced and co-written by Glenn Powell, who also aces the title role. Even though it seems like the part is tailor-made for a certain Ryan Gosling, Powell makes it his own and hits it out of the park. What further helps is his stunning chemistry with Adria Arjona, who plays Madison. While the story, which is loosely based on the life of fake hitman Gary Johnson, is not particularly hard to follow, Linklater puts a philosophical spin on it, which only enhances the whole thing. The director’s signature style of deftly written,...

One conversation around “Hit Man,” our movie contender to watch this week, is mostly about how it should have gotten a legitimate theatrical release and not been a streamer play for Netflix, where its impact will likely be lessened. It’s supposed to be a star turn for Glen Powell, and the type of charisma-driven indie-ish romantic comedy/thriller that people say they wish there were more of in theaters.
But what about the movie itself? Well, it’s a darkly funny based-on-a-true-story charmer, with Powell playing a mild-mannered man who has a gig posing as a hitman to entrap people in murder-for-hire plots for the police. But things get complicated when he falls in love with a “client” (Adria Arjona) who hires him to off her abusive husband. Powell is a long-shot contender for Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay (with director Richard Linklater), but even if this ends...

“Hit Man” is the kind of movie that 25 years ago could have made $200 million at the box office on a budget of two percent of that. Now, Richard Linklater and Glen Powell’s romantic thriller-comedy is going straight to Netflix after traditional studios balked at giving it a theatrical release.
In an interview with the BBC, Linklater attributes that change to studios being afraid to take even small risks on adult-oriented dramas.
“You don’t get fired for doing a sequel or an origin story, something that already exists,” the Oscar-nominated “Boyhood” director said. “You don’t get in trouble for what’s obvious and commercial. What changed is that films got greenlit by the marketing department and then it’s become really safe choices.”

Exclusive: John Hawkes (True Detective: Night Country) has joined the cast of Prime Video‘s graphic novel series, Criminal, in a recurring role. He joins the previously announced cast of Charlie Hunnam, Adria Arjona, Richard Jenkins, Kadeem Hardison, Logan Browning, Pat Healy and Taylor Selé.
Criminal is an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker and Sean Phillips.
Hawkes has been cast as ‘Sebastian Hyde,’ a hard man who is six months out from a stroke, and now walks with a cane. Once the biggest shark in the shark tank, Hyde is now showing his humanity a bit — maybe a bit too much. The owner of a gambling club, the kind of man whose name is accompanied by fear, Hyde can be both amused by someone one minute, and a ruthless enforcer the next.

A raft of new films, from Challengers to Hit Man, have shown the importance and popularity of desire on screen
The success of Hit Man, Richard Linklater’s new comedy that has garnered glowing reviews heralding Glen Powell’s emergence as a true movie star, largely boils down to one factor: illicit attraction. It’s the kind that powers fantasies and a good portion of human behavior, whether we’d like to admit it or not.
There’s the pull of Powell’s Gary, a nerdy thirtysomething psychology professor in New Orleans, moonlighting as an undercover impersonator of hired killers, trying on different, more confident identities for size. There’s the longstanding, vicarious thrill of watching ethically dubious protagonists flitter through a well-oiled crime caper. And most especially, there’s the heat between Gary, in disguise as a suave hitman, and Adria Arjona’s Madison, a potential client with whom...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Dan Baker on Wbgr-fm on June 6th, reviewing “Hit Man,” featuring Glen Powell (also co-writer) and directed by Richard Linklater (“School of Rock”). Streaming on Netflix beginning June 7th.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Gary Johnson (Powell) is a professor of philosophy at the University of New Orleans. While helping the police on the side in investigation techniques, he is asked to go undercover as a hit man, mostly to coerce folks into getting busted for trying to hire him. When Madison (Adria Arjona) solicits his services, his attraction to her throws him off the undercover gig, and his subsequent relationship with her complicates matters further. When fellow cop Jasper (Austin Amelio) starts to suspect something, Gary’s cover is about to be compromised.
“Hit Man” is streaming on Netflix beginning June 7th. Featuring Glen Powell, Adria Arjona, Retta, Austin Amelio and Evan Holtzman.

One of the most talked-about action flicks of this year, Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, deserves all the hype it’s getting. Loosely based on a 2001 article by Skip Hollandsworth, the film is about Gary Johnson, a Texas man who was famous for his undercover persona as a fake hitman. Linklater’s latest movie proves that he’s much more than the Before trilogy, and this movie is also a wake-up call for Hollywood in many ways. It’s not necessary to play it safe when you’ve got a solid script on your hands, and that’s what makes a movie click with the audience. In this article, we’re talking about the ensemble cast and the characters they play in this Netflix movie.

This article contains multitudes of Hit Man spoilers.
The words “true story” are always a curious thing to see at the beginning of a film. Sometimes the term is applied to sober-eyed dramas that seek to convince you they’re nearly documentaries. Think of your Spotlights and All the President’s Mens. More often than not though, the phrase is used as a marketing gimmick for stories where the word “truth” is an abstraction. Think Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Which is what makes another Texan director’s latest indie effort, the beguiling Hit Man now on Netflix, so amusingly slippery. Richard Linklater and Glen Powell’s comedy is indeed based on a “true story,” as they promise at the start. And during the end credits, the film has the photographs to prove it: Gary Johnson was a real man who helped assist in the conviction of dozens of...

CinemaBlind’s Review – 100%
If you weren’t on board the Glen Powell train after Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, his latest film Hit Man is sure to get you on board. Loosely based on the real-life of Gary Johnson, the Netflix film follows the story of a part-time professor and a part-time pretend hit man for the police, but his life completely changes when a beautiful woman comes to him to have her husband killed.
Don’t make assumptions about the film’s genre based on its name because Hit Man isn’t an action or a crime film, but it is much more of a romantic comedy than a crime thriller. Directed by Richard Linklater, who also co-wrote the screenplay with star Powell, Hit Man has a way of making its deeply problematic romantic relationship seem charming and sexy, and while the brilliant performances by Powell and...

The summer movie kickoff has been a little bumpy, but the staff at IMDb have their sights set on several highly anticipated movies and shows coming out in June.
See IMDb’s June Picks
If you need something light and fun for the weekend, check out Glen Powell and Adria Arjona in ‘Hit Man’ on Netflix. Based on the true story of part-time undercover investigator Gary Johnson, director Richard Linklater's crime comedy finds Powell moonlighting as a fake hit man who starts to fall for a woman who enlists his services.
Those looking for thrills and chills can head to the theater, where Will Smith and Martin Lawrence go undercover in ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die,’ and Dakota Fanning finds herself trapped with a bunch of strangers under spooky circumstances in the directorial debut of M. Night Shyamalan's daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan.
The rest of June will keep many fans busy with new episodes of three Emmy-winning series: Season 4 of “The Boys” (6/13) on Prime Video, Season 2 of “House of the Dragon” (6/16) on Max, and Season 3 of “The Bear” (6/27) on Hulu.
There’s not a ton on the menu for families, but ‘Inside Out 2’ is expected to be one of 2024’s box office bright spots. The Pixar sequel brings back Riley’s original emotions and adds Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) as Anxiety and Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear’) as Ennui.
Take a look at all the staff picks for the month in our guide, where you can watch trailers, read more about what’s coming, and add movies and shows to your Watchlist....

The femme fatale is a figure that dates back centuries. In Greek mythology there were The Sirens, whose song dragged sailors to the depths of the seas, as well as Clytemnestra — wife, seductress, and ultimately murderer of King Agamemnon. Even Eve can be considered one for luring Adam into eating the forbidden fruit. But it was motion pictures that elevated the archetype to common nomenclature, starting at the form’s inception with characters played by actresses like Greta Garbo and Louise Brooks, then flourishing in the ‘40s and ‘50s with the popularity of pulp crime narratives.
Bombshells like Rita Hayworth and Barbara Stanwyck came to define the femme fatale, with directors like Charles Vidor and Billy Wilder wielding their strength against the hapless men who populate their films. The ‘80s and ‘90s saw a revitalization of the character type with the rise of erotic thrillers. Glenn Close and Sharon Stone...

You know the story: Boy meets girl, boy advises girl not to kill her abusive husband, boy meets girl again, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back by killing a corrupt police officer. Get some new ideas, Hollywood!

Plot: A mild-mannered psychology professor (Glen Powell) interested in electronics takes a sideline bugging undercover cops in sting operations, specializing in setting up phony hits. When the usual undercover guy is suspended, he’s enlisted to pose as a hitman. He turns out to be a natural at undercover work, with the police using him to entrap people taking out contracts. Things get complicated when he falls for an abused wife (Adria Arjona) wanting to take out her husband.
Review: Richard Linklater’s Hit Man is the movie where Glen Powell finally becomes a legit star. Richard Linklater’s new film, Hit Man, showcases a refreshing spin on the archetypal hitman narrative. Instead of following a conventional killer, the story centers on Gary Johnson (played by Glen Powell), a philosophy professor who moonlights as an undercover hitman for the police. This intriguing character blend sets up a narrative rich in psychological complexities and relationship dynamics. Crafting Intricate Characters Adria Arjona, who plays Madison Masters, shared how she connected instantly with Powell on set. She remarked, I’ve had such an incredible time working with Glen; we really clicked from the beginning. It’s a joy to be on set...

Richard Linklater is opening up about the hurdles to producing his latest movie, “Hit Man,” saying that studios initially “really didn’t want to make the film.”
In a new interview with the BBC, the celebrated director of “Dazed and Confused” and the “Before” trilogy said that he and Glen Powell — who stars in the film and co-wrote the script — worked on the film “very independently.”
“Glen and I wrote it speculatively and we didn’t get paid anything, we just tried to get the film made,” he told the BBC. “We really felt we were onto something, we felt we had written a film noir, a crime film that’s also a screwball comedy about a couple that you’re rooting to be together, but I think they wanted it to be just one thing.”

“When did our professor get hot?” This is a query posed by one enterprising student in a psychology 101 seminar to another. In that exact moment, they’re watching their part-time instructor, a previously nebbish Glen Powell, begin acting like… well, how you might expect Glen Powell to act if you’ve seen Top Gun: Maverick and Everybody Wants Some!! (although in those flicks he never was so cocksure while explaining the societal virtues in summary execution).
And honestly, you cannot help but feel like those surprised coeds. Not in regard to realizing Powell is hot.
