Gianfranco Rosi’s documentaries tend to plant a camera in challenging passages of everyday life that otherwise go largely unrecorded: the Middle Eastern war zones of “Notturno,” the island standoff between villagers and refugees in “Fire at Sea,” the highway-side working-class apartments of “Sacro Gra.” “In Viaggio,” however, sees him turn his gaze toward the opposite extreme of privilege and prominence, trying to find a new angle on Pope Francis, by any measure one of the world’s most photographed men. In doing so, he relinquishes some control over his lens: Tracking a decade’s worth of international papal visits to over 50 countries, the film is largely composed of archival footage from those tours, merged with Rosi’s own observation of the Pope’s trips to Malta and Canada.

Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to “In Viaggio,” a documentary that offers a comprehensive look at the travels of Pope Francis. The globe-trotting film was directed by Gianfranco Rosi, the Academy Award-nominated filmmaker behind “Fire at Sea” and “Notturno.”
It is composed mostly of archival footage, and shows the public life of the head of the Catholic Church, following him from the pulpit through the “unpaved streets and vast public avenues” where he interacts with the faithful and those in need. Magnolia is planning a theatrical release on March 31, 2023.
“In Viaggio” premiered out of competition at the Venice Film Festival. IndieWire praised the movie for its “remarkable” access, as well as for its “elegant footage, stylishly directed and edited.”
The film’s title translates in Italian to “en route.” It unfolds over the first nine years of Pope Francis’s pontificate, during which he visited 53 countries, focusing on issues such as poverty,...

Master documentary filmmaker Gianfranco Rosi, whose “Sacro Gra” won the Venice Golden Lion in 2013, is back on the Lido with “In Viaggio,” a doc about Pope Francis’ travels in which the director creates a counterpoint between archival footage and images that Rosi shot himself.
In the first nine years of his pontificate, Pope Francis made 37 trips visiting 53 countries, focusing on his key issues: poverty, migration, the environment, solidarity and war.
Intrigued by the fact that two of Francis’ trips – the first to the refugees landing in the Sicilian island of Lampedusa; the second in 2021 to the Middle East – so closely mirrored the itineraries of the director’s “Fire at Sea” (2016) and “Notturno” (2020), Rosi decided to delve into hundreds of hours of footage of papal travels with the intention of providing through them a “map of the human condition,” he says.
