Taraji P. Henson’s new overall deal at BET Studios is already paying dividends, with Henson in talks to produce and star in “Queenie,” a new series about Stephanie St. Clair, otherwise known as the “Godmother of Harlem.”
Adapted by Leigh Davenport, the series is based on the book “The World of Stephanie St. Clair: An Entrepreneur, Race Woman and Outlaw in the Early Twentieth Century Harlem” by Shirley Stewart. It tells the true story of St. Clair, who in the 1920s and ’30s was “the most profitable female ‘numbers banker’ in an illegal underworld run by the most vicious and notorious of men.”
“To put it too simply, all she ever wanted was to run and mind her own business. After all, she was a lady,” the series logline explains. “But when a greedy and violent mobster began encroaching on her territory, she stood in defiance, waging a war that changed Harlem,...

Ridley Scott’s 2007 feature, American Gangster, let Denzel Washington lead a regime change in uptown mob movies. That heralded position had always been held by Bumpy Johnson, who steered the underworld through the real-life Harlem Renaissance, holding his own against the Irish and Jewish mobs, and enjoying a long relationship with New York’s Italian criminal outfit. Partnered with Harlem’s crime queen Stephanie St. Clair and her gang the 40 Thieves, Johnson made his bones in the turf war with Dutch Schultz from the Bronx in the 1920s and ‘30s. Lucky Luciano gave the order to take out Schultz and declare Bumpy a family associate. Bumpy played chess with the head of the Five Families for years in front of the Ymca on 135th Street.
Laurence Fishburne played “Bumpy Rhodes,” based on Bumpy Johnson, in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1984 gangster film, The Cotton Club, and reprised the role as Johnson in the 1997 film Hoodlum.

Uptown mobster Bumpy Johnson was a poet. Epix's upcoming Godfather of Harlem shows he was also an activist.
"Bumpy" Johnson was around when the Genovese crime family still had "Lucky" Luciano's name on it. He got out of prison around the time Malcolm X preached common sense. The upcoming gangster series Godfather of Harlem will premiere on Epix on September 29, according to Deadline. Oscar-winning actor and director Forest Whitaker will star as Bumpy Johnson. Ilfenesh Hadera (She's Gotta Have It), will play Mayme Hatcher Johnson, Bumpy's wife. The trailer says Johnson will bring back his community “by any means necessary.”
