The idea for “Rain on the Graves” — the latest single from Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson’s upcoming solo album, The Mandrake Project, out March 1 — came to him while visiting the resting place of poet William Wordsworth. He’d been invited to a wedding in England’s Lake District in 2012, and, knowing that Wordsworth wrote a lot of his verses in Grasmere, he decided to visit his stone cottage and the church where his body was interred.

Bruce Dickinson has shared the video for “Rain on the Graves,” the second single from his forthcoming album The Mandrake Project.
The bombastic metal track sees Dickinson employing a half-spoken word/half-song delivery that allows him to essentially narrate the lyrics, as he often has in Iron Maiden.
Dickinson co-penned the music with guitarist Roy Z, and the duo keep the guitars and organs hot in the mix, creating a gothic power-metal atmosphere that’s driven home by regal horror of director Ryan Mackfall’s video. It’s also our first look at Dickinson’s “house band from hell,” aka his solo-band ensemble.
“I had the chorus lyric in my head since I visited Grasmere for a wedding back in 2012,” said Dickinson of “Rain on the Graves,” which was inspired by blues pioneer Robert Johnson. “It wasn’t difficult years later to create the rest of the song with so...

Bruce Dickinson has revealed the release date and the full tracklist for his new solo album. The Iron Maiden singer’s forthcoming LP, The Mandrake Project, will arrive on March 1st via BMG. In advance of the release, he’s officially unveiled the album’s first single, “Afterglow of Ragnarok,” an epic, galloping, eight-minute-long metal anthem.
The Mandrake Project, which marks Dickinson’s first solo album since 2005, will feature 10 songs, including a new version of “Eternity Has Failed,” which first appeared on Iron Maiden’s 2015 album The Book of Souls. A press release tours the theme of the album as a “dark, adult story of power, abuse and a struggle for identity, set against the backdrop of scientific and occult genius.”
A cinematic music video accompanies the release of “Afterglow of Ragnarok.” Speaking about the video, director Ryan Mackfall remarked, “Many years before I was a director, I have fond...

Cosmic horror seems to be having a bit of a moment in the last few years with productions such as Colour out of Space, Mandy, and Annihilation giving audiences feature-length thrills and the likes of Alex Fofonoff’s While Mortals Sleep and Ryan Mackfall’s Backwoods making waves in the short film world. The attraction to stories about the fear of the unknown is rife. This trend continues with Giles Buchanan’s short cliffside thriller Terror, which sees a lone survivor of a mountain climbing accident recall the supernatural occurrence that led to devastating consequences. Buchanan’s short is a terrific example of how editing can be used to maximise tension and it features some truly impressive alpine cinematography. As Terror embarks on its festival run, Dn joined Buchanan for a conversation where he reveals the challenging and lengthy process of getting the film made, talking about everything from preparing...
