The Walkmen were the musical guests on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert Wednesday night, marking their first live performance since 2014. Instead of debuting new music, however, the rock band performed their 2004 classic “The Rat.”
Personally, if we were scheduling our first concert in nearly a decade, we would not want to do it on television! But The Walkmen, who have a handful of proper reunion shows coming up, made their time away feel insignificant, especially considering it was barely over a month ago when guitarist Paul Maroon tweeted that “The Rat” was “extremely fast and currently [he] cannot play it.”
All of The Walkmen must’ve really hunkered down and practiced. “The Rat” went off without a hitch on Colbert, with the band playing the breakneck rocker pretty dang close to the studio version’s tempo. All the members looked a little bit overwhelmed, but also stoked to be back; most importantly,...

Hello there. My name is Paul Maroon, and I’m a professional musician who’s played in bands for the past 30 years, most recently in a group called The Walkmen. In that time, I’ve picked up a fair amount of information, some of which is actually pretty useful: How to kill a week at a Toronto airport hotel. How to solve…...

Stewart Lupton, singer of ‘90s rock band Jonathan Fire*Eater, died Sunday at the age of 43, a family member confirmed to Pitchfork. No official cause of death has been announced.
While relatively unknown these days, Jonathan Fire*Eater were arguably the first of the wave of rock bands that burst out of New York in the late 1990s and early ‘00s and helped pave the way for the Strokes, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, TV on the Radio and others.
Originally from Washington, D.C., the bandmembers moved to New York and released a self-titled Ep in 1995; an album and series of singles followed. At the time the New York rock scene — and alternative music in general — were in a recession from the grunge explosion of the early 1990s, and Jonathan Fire*Eater was one of the few signs of life in the late 1990s. A fierce bidding war ensued...

Six months ago, the Walkmen surprised their fans by announcing they were, if not necessarily breaking up, taking a "pretty extreme hiatus.” The band members remain friends and even staged a mini-reunion not long after their announcement, but for the moment they committed to focusing on their own projects. The most high-profile of these solo records comes from lead singer Hamilton Leithauser. Out today, Black Hours finds Leithauser's songwriting to be a bit more stylistically diverse and relaxed, but when he's singing, it's undeniably the same guy who fronted the Walkmen to much acclaim for more than a decade. So Vulture got Walkmen guitarist Paul Maroon, who also plays on Black Hours, to interview Leithauser. They talk about books, vocal ranges, and which songs seemed liked they might've been written for the Walkmen.Paul Maroon: Do you ever go up to where you used to live, up in Manhattan?...

Hamilton Leithauser, natty singer for The Walkmen, is reportedly working on a solo album with members of Vampire Weekend, Fleet Foxes, and, umm, The Walkmen. Pitchfork is reporting (via Kicking The Habit) that Leithauser is recording with Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend), Morgan Henderson (Fleet Foxes), and Paul Maroon (The Walkmen)—as well as singer-songwriter Richard Swift, who we'll just go ahead and assume is producing as well, because he does that a lot and also plays in The Shins. With that much talent on board, it's bound to be pretty fantastic. Speaking of fantastic and The Walkmen (segue ...
