Law & Order very nearly became the longest-running crime drama on television. If it hadn't been for a 10-year hiatus, it would have reached its 24th season a long time ago.
Thanks to that break, sister show Law & Order: Svu has pulled ahead by two seasons.
Still, Law & Order is one of NBC's most iconic shows, from its "dun dun" chime between scenes to its filming on location in New York City. It's high time for a cast and character guide to help you keep track of who you can expect to see (and not see!) during Law & Order Season 24.
Two Characters Are Not Coming Back
Many viewers were shocked when Jack McCoy (Sam Waterson) left Law & Order after over 400 episodes.

Three weeks after Law & Order bid farewell to Sam Waterston, the NBC procedural on Thursday introduced Tony Goldwyn as the newest District Attorney.
Usually, the legal part of the drama doesn’t happen until later in the episode, but Goldwyn’s Nicholas Baxter joined the action at the top of the hour as Detectives Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) and Vincent Riley (Reid Scott) are investigating the bludgeoning death of multi-millionaire Jonah Barlowe.
Baxter explains his sudden appearance by saying the sight of the “swirling lights” got him excited and that he “hasn’t been at crime scene in over 30 years. I couldn’t help myself.”
He lingers at the scene for only a few seconds before telling the detectives that “I’ll do everything in my power to create a constructive and transparent relationship with the police. That’s it.”

Tony Goldwyn is bringing some of his “magic” to Law & Order when he debuts as the new district attorney Nicholas Baxter in the March 14 episode. He takes over from Sam Waterston‘s Jack McCoy, who resigned in his final episode. “The end of an era, cheers to Sam,” Mehcad Brooks (who plays Detective Jalen Shaw) tells TV Insider. “He was a beacon of virtue for over two, three decades, really, and it was such an honor and a privilege to get to work with him. And what a funny, just enticing individual and just a lovely human being, an incredible actor, and he will be missed.” The promo, which you can watch above, offers a look at Goldwyn as Baxter and him and Price (Hugh Dancy) clashing. “He’s ambitious, and he wants headlines,” Price says. “He wants to do things his way,” Maroun (Odelya Halevi) adds. Detective Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) is going to be questioning himself in the February 29 episode of Law & Order—and as a result, we’ll see something we don’t usually see on a procedural drama. In “On the Ledge,” when the NYPD responds to the scene of an active shooter in a nearby hospital, Shaw is shocked at his connection to the suspect. Then, Maroun (Odelya Halevi) and Price (Hugh Dancy) face a difficult trial when the defendant offers up an insanity plea. Below, Brooks previews this week’s episode, talks Shaw and Riley’s (Reid Scott) dynamic, and more. This case has a bit of a surprise for Shaw because he does have a connection to the suspect, but it’s a random one. Mehcad Brooks: The connection is very random in the fact that Shaw’s on his way to work and he runs into a man who is contemplating suicide.

What? We can't believe Sam Waterson's leaving Law & Order.
There have been many cast changes, but Jack McCoy has been a fixture since the 1990s.
But sometimes, a character has gone as far as he can. McCoy may be ready to retire, which offers an opportunity to breathe new life into the oldest member of the Law & Order franchise.
McCoy is an old-school district attorney -- the kind of man the younger characters look to as a mentor. This is how Law & Order district attorneys tend to be; when he was young, he reported to Adam Schiff, who had many years of experience.
But times have changed, and Law & Order is overdue for a shakeup. Many viewers who love Law & Order: Svu and Law & Order: Organized Crime are having a hard time connecting with this reboot, so something needs to change.

It's not easy to be a district attorney, especially in a big city like Manhattan, where competing pressures exist.
Jack McCoy should be perfectly poised to handle it. He was an Ada for years, is passionate about justice, and knows the ins and outs of the legal system.
But on Law & Order Season 23 Episode 3, McCoy again made a questionable decision based on what would most likely win the case. It was less egregious than entering a potentially fake video into evidence, but it still felt like McCoy had lost his way.
Cops should never be put on pedestals, and questioning their integrity and fitness for the job is fair game. And since Riley got tipsy on the job and punched his supervisor, he would have faced public questioning about it sooner or later.
But McCoy's decision about this was purely political. He weighed the possibility that the cops wouldn't...

Casting turnover is the name of the game when it comes to the Law & Order franchise. Through 23 seasons of the flagship series (and not even to mention the many spinoffs), Law & Order has cycled through dozens of casting combinations in filling out both the “law” and “order” halves of its ensemble.
When Law & Order returned for season 21 in 2022 after a lengthy hiatus, it looked like it had a solid detective duo in place with Anthony Anderson’s Kevin Bernard and Jeffrey Donovan’s Frank Cosgrove. Now, just two years later both actors are gone. Anderson departed after season 21 and Donovan after season 22.
Law & Order season 23 pairs Mehcad Brooks’ Jalen Shaw (who replaced Anderson) with newbie Vincent Riley, played by recognizable face Reid Scott. If you’re wondering who Reid Scott is and what makes him a good fit for this crime drama, don’t worry – we’ve got the answers.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Law & Order Season 23 premiere “Freedom of Expression.”] Detective Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) has a new partner in Law & Order Season 23 in Detective Vincent Riley (Reid Scott), after the exit of Jeffrey Donovan over the hiatus. But given that the Season 22 finale didn’t set up his exit, how was Detective Frank Cosgrove’s absence explained in the premiere? It’s a third of the way through the episode that Riley asks Shaw what happened with Cosgrove, sharing he knew him a little back in the day and calling him a good cop. “Great cop, just got jammed up,” Shaw says. On? “Being too honest about things people aren’t too honest about these days.” “Yeah, it is not a great time to have an opinion, is it?” Riley asks. A new NYPD detective will be joining the force on the upcoming 23rd season of Law & Order. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Veep alum Reid Scott has joined the upcoming season as a new series regular on the NBC police procedural, portraying an as-yet unamed NYPD detective.
Scott will feel the void left by former series regular Jeffrey Donovan, who recently exited the show over creative differences. Donovan portrayed Det. Frank Cosgrove in seasons 21 and 22 of the mothership Law & Order drama from Dick Wolf’s Wolf Entertainment.
This marks the second detective change on the revival. Anthony Anderson, who reprised his role as Det. Kevin Bernard from the series’ original run, left after Season 21 and was succeeded by Mehcad Brooks, who joined the cast in Season 22 as Frank’s new partner Jalen Shaw.
The Law & Order cast also includes Sam Waterston as Da Jack McCoy, Hugh Dancy as senior prosecutorial assistant Nolan Price, and Camryn Manheim (The Practice) as Lt. Kate Dixon.
Law & Order, which premieres its 23rd season on January 18, 2024, is produced by Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group.
Scott recently starred in the fifth and final season of Emmy-winning The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel after recurring in Season 4. He can currently be seen starring in the “Daphne” episode of FX anthology series American Horror Stories. He earlier starred on another Emmy-winning comedy, HBO’s Veep, for seven seasons. Scott just wrapped production on the Amazon film Idea of You, starring opposite Anne Hathaway and directed by Michael Showalter. Reid also stars in, and executive produced the pandemic comedy Who Invited Charlie? opposite Adam Palley and Jordana Brewster, as well as the comedy ensemble Wildflower. Scott is repped by Gersh, Impression Entertainment and Ggssc.

It looks like there’s going to need to be a new detective working alongside Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) when Law & Order returns for its 23rd season (a premiere date has yet to be announced). Jeffrey Donovan, who has played Detective Frank Cosgrove on the NBC drama since it returned for its 21st season in 2022, is exiting ahead of the new season, reports TVLine. According to the outlet’s sources, he “was let go for creative reasons” and there will be a new series regular joining the cast, which, in addition to Brooks, includes Sam Waterston (D.A. Jack McCoy), Camryn Manheim (Lieutenant Kate Dixon), Hugh Dancy (Ada Nolan Price), and Odelya Halevi (Ada Samantha Maroun). Brooks came in as Cosgrove’s partner last season after Anthony Anderson, who returned from the original run as Detective Kevin Bernard for one season, exited. Now, it’ll be Shaw’s turn to get a new partner.

It's hard to imagine Thursday nights without Law & Order.
Although the series that kicked off the franchise ceased production in 2010, it came back to life with all new episodes during the spring of 2022, and it's been an NBC staple ever since.
Fortunately, we don't have to worry about it going off the air yet; NBC renewed it for a 23rd season in April 2023. Check out everything we know so far about Law & Order Season 23, and be sure to bookmark this page so that you'll always have the most up-to-date info!
Unlike the other two series in the franchise, Law & Order focuses more on plot than character-driven stories, although that has changed somewhat in recent years.

As the 2023-24 TV season comes to a close to make room for the broadcast networks’ summer slates, the networks sent out their finales with the hope of nabbing big ratings numbers so they can charge equally big advertising rates.
ABC scored the top finale of the season with its “American Idol” finale nabbing a rating of 0.83 while No. 2 went to CBS with “Survivor’s” Season 44 finale scoring a 0.69 rating. The third highest-rated finale went to CBS’ “Ghosts,” which earned a 0.62 rating, while ABC’s “Jeopardy! Masters” finale secured fourth place with a 0.61 rating.
For the full rundown on how each season — or series — finale fared ratings-wise per network — and if each show was renewed for another season or not — see below.

In Thursday night’s Jeffrey Donovan-centric episode of “Law & Order,” titled “Appraisal,” his character Frank Cosgrove and partner Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) suspect a gallery owner has been murdered but have no body to prove their case.
In a video clip exclusively shared with TheWrap of the episode, which you can watch at the top of this story, Cosgrove assures the missing woman’s brother that he’ll do everything he can to find her. He also tells the man, “Prepare yourself,” since he believes that the sister is dead, murdered like one of her artist friends who was at the opening night event the night before.
In photos from the episode, Cosgrove reluctantly celebrates his 50th birthday and questions a suspect.
“Appraisal” also features guest stars Nicholas Podany, Kate Jennings Grant, Christina Brucato, Patrick Mulvey Adam Smith Jr., Gina Daniels, Atticus Cain and Brenda Luz Orellana.

Hugh Dancy steps out of Ada Nolan Price’s comfort zone in the March 30 episode of Law & Order. In “Bias,” after a public defender is murdered, Detective Frank Cosgrove (Jeffrey Donovan) and Detective Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) are surprised to find Price at the crime scene, and his involvement in the trial compromises the case. Here, Dancy previews the episode and talks about taking the stand. Price is involved in this case in a very different way from usual. What’s going on and where is his head at as a result? Hugh Dancy: He finds the body. He’s involved just in the sense that he’s there, right at the beginning of the show. But it’s also the case that the victim is somebody who he has a connection to. So he has multiple vested interests, let’s say. And you’re not just in court!

Since its premiere in 1990, "Law & Order" has become the gold standard of police procedurals. It was by no means the first police procedural, but it is perhaps the most recognizable. True to its genre, each episode of this series features a crime that must be solved by detectives and prosecuted by the District Attorney's office. Although some storylines are original ideas, many take inspiration from high-profile cases, larger-than-life criminals, and current events within the U.S. justice system.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Law & Order Season 22 Episode 9, “The System.”] In the Law & Order fall finale, Detective Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) is faced with the fact that the confession he got from a young Black man, Troy Booker (Chaundre Hall-Broomfield), was false — and that is just the beginning of a string of events that lead to a complicated trial. While at the courthouse, Troy, who’d been proclaiming his innocence, escapes and, while fighting with a corrections officer for control of a gun, the weapon goes off. The officer later dies, and Troy is put on trial for his death — but video evidence shows that he was innocent of the crime for which he was originally in prison. But for the officer, he’s found guilty of murder in the second degree. Brooks takes us inside that ending. How does Shaw feel about the verdict at the end? Mehcad Brooks: Ambivalent. I don...

In Thursday night’s episode of “Law & Order,” Mehcad Brooks’ police detective character Jalen Shaw find himself inadvertently perpetuating the racism of the prison system when he learns, too late, that a young male suspect whose confession he’s obtained is actually innocent.
“This young man is waiting for his trial. He’s been at Rikers for 18 months, he’s being abused and assaulted on Rikers on a daily basis. So he decides to escape. We find out that he’s innocent, through a video that never surfaced later. And then the problem is, during his escape, the kid takes a hostage, and things go sideways,” Brooks says of the episode, titled “The System.”

Detective Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) is going to be questioning himself in the Law & Order Season 22 fall finale. In “The System,” airing December 8, a suspect arrested for murder escapes police custody after months of waiting for his day in court. As a hostage situation erupts, Shaw must re-examine his conduct as the arresting officer. Plus, Price (Hugh Dancy) questions his faith in the justice system. Brooks looks ahead to the fall finale. Preview the case. When it begins, how much is he questioning his previous actions? Mehcad Brooks: Shaw got a confession from a kid who appeared to have murdered someone, comes out later that he didn’t, and there’s video evidence to support that. That tears Shaw up inside, but this kid, much like Kalief Browder, he was in Rikers for something he didn’t do, and it was tearing this kid up inside. So I liken...

Mehcad Brooks, who made his debut as Detective Jalen Shaw on last week’s “Law & Order” crossover event, is a “huge fan” of John Oliver, despite the “Last Week Tonight” host’s savage critique that the show is “a complete fantasy” that glamorizes law enforcement and mainly serves as a police recruitment tool.
“I think he’s an incredible satirist. He goes after institutions, and ‘Law & Order’ is an institution,” Brooks told TheWrap. “That’s his brand. But the thing that really has inspired me about what was supposed to be a hit piece, was he said that ‘Law & Order’ is an extremely dynamic recruitment tool for police. Well, if, in five to 10 years, there’s more police who look and think like Jalen Shaw, great.”

After four seasons, Anthony Anderson's time as Detective Bernard has come to a close. The actor reportedly signed on for only one year of NBC's "Law & Order" revival, per Entertainment Tonight, and this upcoming season will see the exit of his fan-favorite character.
In an effort to make the character's exit as seamless as possible, show producers have figured out a way to write Detective Bernard out in a way that doesn't feel too jarring to viewers (although his presence will still inevitably be missed). Showrunner Rick Eid told TVLine exactly how the show plans to handle Anderson's exit, including an acknowledgment in the second episode of season 22.

What began as a simple murder case soon had all three squads joining together to stop a possible bombing attack and uncover a conspiracy.
This had additions of a new cop for Law & Order as well as a dramatic turn for an Svu detective that could pave the way for a tough exit.
It was also terrific just seeing all three shows working together for one storyline with some intriguing team-ups.
While the ending was a bit bittersweet, it did remind fans of how much the cops and prosecutors care for the victims to see justice done.

Law & Order has released the explosive (literally) final trailer for the upcoming season premiere crossover event.
While some footage has been teased, this trailer shows the scope of the case so epic that it unites all three Law & Order shows together for the first time.
The story, titled Gimmie Shelter, has a simple murder case turning into a possible terrorist attack on New York City.
This forces not just the cops but the prosecutors to unite together to stop the coming disaster and make sure the criminals behind it face justice.
While promising plenty of action, it’s seeing the characters of all three Law & Order shows coming together that makes this a massive event for fans.
With just over a week before the premiere hits, this trailer just intensifies the anticipation for the biggest Law & Order event yet.

If you’ve watched Law & Order: Svu at any point over the last twelve years, you’re likely quite familiar with NYPD Detective Amanda Rollins. Kelli Giddish, who has played Rollins since the thirteenth season of Law & Order: Svu, announced last week that she would be leaving the show, but according to Variety, it wasn’t entirely her choice.
Variety reported that Kelli Giddish’s exit from Law & Order: Svu wasn’t a decision made by showrunner David Graziano, but rather by someone higher up. One insider said that “the company is always looking to keep the show as up to date and current as possible,” whatever that means. Variety also said that Mariska Hargitay, who has starred in the series from day one and is an executive producer, tried to keep Kelli Giddish on the show but was unsuccessful. Salary negotiations were also said to play a part when...

Law & Order’s newest detective will bring a new perspective to the series.
Showrunner Rick Eid shared how Mehcad Brooks will shift up Law & Order when he joins in Season 22.
His character, Detective Jalen Shaw, will debut in the big three-part crossover of the Law & Order shows that kick off the season on September 22.
Eid is now detailing more of Shaw’s background and what drove him to become a cop. That includes the revelation he was originally going to be a lawyer.
While circumstances drove him to the police force, Shaw is trying his best as a cop to maintain justice in his own way.
This promises some dramatic developments for the character and Brooks himself is eager to bring a new change to the show.
