- She started out as a social worker, assisting earthquake victims on the Greek island of Zakynthos. Later, she went to Paris, where she studied art, and was influenced by Surrealists like poet André Breton and artist Max Ernst.
- She attended the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco (now the San Francisco Art Institute) before moving to New York.
- In the 1960s, she was one of the first artists to use neon lighting as a fine art medium.
