Almost eleven months have gone by since we heard that Julie Bowen – who played the character Claire Dunphy on 250 episodes of the ABC sitcom Modern Family – had signed on to star in the coming-of-age Satanic Panic thriller series Hysteria!, which is set up at the Peacock streaming service. Emjay Anthony (Physical), Chiara Aurelia (Cruel Summer), Kezii Curtis (Charm City Kings), Nikki Hahn (Magnum P.I.), and Anna Camp of the Pitch Perfect films joined the show soon after Bowen. Then genre icon Bruce Campbell signed on to play small town police chief Dandridge. Things have been quiet for a while, but now Deadline has revealed the names of several more Hysteria! cast members. They are Garret Dillahunt (The Last House on the Left remake), Nolan North (Pretty Little Liars), Elijah Richardson (Fantasy Football), Milly Shapiro (Hereditary), Allison Scagliotti (Warehouse 13), and Jessica Treska (Alex & Me). All of the newly announced cast...

Production on the Peacock series Hysteria! starring Julie Bowen and Anna Camp has shut down production in Atlanta for the remainder of the WGA writers strike.
Deadline understands the WGA picket line was respected by Teamsters and IATSE early Monday morning, the 35th day of the strike.
While production shutdowns have become a regular occurrence in New York and Los Angeles as a result of picketing by striking writers, this is believed to be the first series to suspend filming in Atlanta. WGA East and West members are organizing in key cities outside of New York City and Los Angeles to help set up pickets with local members where productions have expanded in recent years, including Atlanta and Albuquerque.
Created by Matthew Scott Kane who writes and executive produces and co-showruns alongside David A. Goodman, former WGA President who is a co-chair of the negotiating committee. Hysteria! explores America’s...

Bruce Campbell is no stranger to dealing with the supernatural, so it’s no surprise that Variety has reported that he’s joined the cast of Hysteria!, Peacock’s satanic panic series.
Per the official description, “When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the ‘Satanic Panic’ of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings, and reported ‘supernatural activity’ triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them.” Sounds… interesting. Bruce Campbell will play Chief Dandridge in Hysteria!, who is described as “a small-town police chief whose understanding of his community is put to the test after a disturbing series of murders, disappearances, and unexplained phenomena.”

Before a single line of dialogue is uttered in Charm City Kings — before the title credits have barely begun rolling — you hear the sound of motorbikes: a whirring, revving, sputtering cacophony that sounds like the occupants of a hornet’s nest switching to savage mode. In Baltimore, Maryland, the noise equals status in certain neighborhoods, where what kind of bike you own and what kind of tricks you can do on it determines the respect you get. The undisputed real-life rough-riding kings of the scene are the 12 O’Clock Boys,...

Sundance Film Festival alums that receive a ton of acclaim usually have one of two paths. They either end up as Oscar players, taking that strong buzz and carving out a path in the awards season, or they crumble under the weight of added expectations. For every one of the former, there’s multiple each year of the latter. Charm City Kings, while not firmly stuck as a disappointment, certainly is a step down from what Sundance crowds seemed to suggest. This is not an Academy Award player in the slightest, and frankly, isn’t a particularly satisfying experience. Headed this week to HBO Max, it’s likely to wind up forgotten about before too long, despite some promising aspects to it. The movie is a drama, mixed with a bit of a coming of age tale. For as long as he can remember, Mouse (Jahi Di’Allo Winston) has wanted...

"People like us don't get no second chances, Mouse." HBO Max has released a brand new official trailer for Charm City Kings, which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The film is a feature adaptation of the acclaimed documentary 12 O'Clock Boys, which originally premiered in 2013, and opened in theaters in 2014. The film is about a 14-year-old boy named Mouse who joins a notorious dirt bike gang in Baltimore. Sundance describes this as an "electric feature that pulses with teen gusto, thumping hip-hop, and amazing bike tricks. Soto directs an astonishingly talented cast to create a narrative bursting with pitch-perfect performances and intoxicating emotion." Starring Jahi Di'Allo Winston as Mouse, plus Meek Mill, Will Catlett, Teyonah Parris, Donielle Tremaine Hansley, and Kezii Curtis. The New York Latino Film Festival (Nylff) has set their lineup for their forthcoming hybrid edition of its fest which will take place September 14-20.
In the wake of the pandemic, many festivals have either canceled or pivoted to an entirely virtual program. Nylff is one of the Latinx-based film fests that have continued with plans for their annual fest — with the appropriate changes. The 21st edition will be a combination of virtual events and in-person, drive-in screenings that celebrates Latinx creators. The fest will also host the first Latino drive-in experience to take place both in New York and in The Bronx.
This year’s festival features nearly 75 films representing more than 10 countries, spanning all genres including features, shorts, documentaries, web series and experimental films.
“Inspired by the resilience of the Latino community, Nylff is proud to return with a fresh format featuring our first-ever drive-in experiences,” said Calixto Chinchilla,...

"Don't need you, don't need anybody... but me!" Sony Pictures Classics has debuted the exciting full-length official trailer fro Charm City Kings, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last month. A superb trailer for a film I've heard nothing but good things about! Everyone is saying Jahi as Mouse is the real deal. Here's the...

Not every documentary lends itself to a narrative adaptation, but “12 O’Clock Boys” begged for it. Lotfy Nathan’s 2013 portrait of Baltimore dirt-bikers captured carefree speed demons careening through narrow streets, while a young boy dreams of joining their crew. On its own terms, Nathan’s scrappy non-fiction gem was a riveting action movie and an inner-city coming-of-age drama all at once. “Charm City Kings” fits the material into a more formulaic narrative mold. Despite a lot of familiar beats, the potential of the original comes through, with a sentimental portrait of childhood dreamers and the reckless men who inspire them.
Guided by Angel Manuel Soto’s slick direction and a breakthrough performance from Jahi Di’Allo Winston, the movie works overtime to energize real-world struggles with the thrill of street life. At the same time, “Charm City Kings” channels Yasujiro Ozu’s ability to foreground sensitive child performances in a story loaded with adult situations.

“Charm City Kings,” directed by Angel Manuel Soto and written by Sherman Payne, is an earnest coming-of-age story about a Baltimore 14-year-old named Mouse (Jahi Di’Allo Winston) torn between joining the Midnight Clique, an extreme dirt bike crime gang in stormtrooper-esque shiny white breastplates, or becoming a veterinarian. While that setup might make eyes roll, it’s inspired by the 2013 documentary “12 O’Clock Boys,” in which an actual kid (real name Pug) wrestled with those same options. The film’s truly ridiculous plot choices — the phony twists that make you leave the theater feeling like you’ve inhaled a tank of carbon monoxide — are its own invention, bolted onto a likable, if formulaic, charmer.
Soto opens on home movie-style footage of Mouse’s older brother Stro (Tyquan Ford) pushing himself to “hit 12,” rearing up on his bike’s back wheel until he’s as straight as a clock hand. Stro,...

The 2020 Sundance Film Festival has broken a record weeks before it begins: Of the 16 films in Dramatic Competition, seven tell stories primarily about the lives of black characters: “The 40-Year-Old Version,” “Charm City Kings,” “Farewell Amor,” “Miss Juneteenth,” “Nine Days,” “Sylvie’s Love” and “Zola.”
Surveying the last 30 years of Sundance, there’s usually been at least one in-competition film with black leads. In 1992 and 1989, there was one black film in competition, while 1993 had two. But prior to 2020, there had never been more than five.
Black filmmakers saw a renaissance in the late ’80s and early ’90s, a period that introduced Spike Lee, Wendell B. Harris Jr, Robert Townsend, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Julie Dash, Matty Rich, the Hudlin Brothers, Leslie Harris, and others. Some of their films premiered and competed at Sundance, but even then they never composed a significant presence.
