HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, returned for its second season this week, and the premiere revealed that Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and Lord Commander of the Kingsguard Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) had begun to engage in an illicit affair.
We see a couple of sex scenes involving these characters over the course of the episode, but Cooke has now revealed that a far more graphic and "animalistic" sequence ended up being cut by co-creator Ryan Condol because he felt it didn't advance the story or develop the characters in any meaningful way.
“It was messy as f*ck. It wasn’t beautiful, and that was really fun to do,” Cooke tells Elle Magazine. “I think Ryan said we weren’t learning any more about the characters, which I disagree with slightly, but it’s Ok. It’s his show.”

The marketing for House of the Dragon Season 2 has tried to play up the civil war angle of the show, with the two factions being The Blacks, who support the claim of Rhaenyra Targaryen as the true air of Viserys Targaryen, and The Greens, which refers to the faction of Aegon Targaryen, the current monarch of Westeros.
Tom Glynn-Carney plays Aegon II Targaryen in House of the Dragon || HBO
However, despite trying to drum up the sort of support for each side, like IPs have done before (such as Captain America: Civil War doing Team Cap and Team Iron Man), the narrative of the show has been tilting toward painting one side in a more devious light than the other, and it seems that The Greens might have ended up with a shorter end of the stick.

The first season of House of the Dragon gave viewers a pretty good idea of both Team Black and Team Green. With many rooting for the Blacks, Team Green had very few fans, most of whom admired Olivia Cooke's Alicent Hightower and Ewan Mitchell's Prince Aemond. With the season two premiere, however, the power dynamic began to shift.
Now that both branches of the Targaryen family are headed for actual war, the stakes are higher and the strategy has to be more thoughtful. So far, the premiere has shown Team Green's level-headed planning, which could lead them to victory. But that wasn't the only surprise the Greens had in store.
King Aegon the Magnanimous
The opening of season 2 showed the beginning of King Aegon's reign under the careful guidance of his grandfather Otto Hightower, also doubling as The Hand, and his mother Alicent, who still has a seat on the small council.

The first episode of House of the Dragon season 2 is now streaming on Max, and in typical Game of Thrones fashion, the prequel series returned to our screens with a shocking character death.
Now, the streamer has now released a new "weeks ahead" trailer featuring some big hints about what's to come.
Spoilers follow.
The teaser sees King Aegon officially declare war on the Black Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen after discovering that his beloved son Jaehaerys has been brutally murdered by the assassins known as Blood and Cheese. We also see Rhaenyra admonish Daemon for giving the order, noting that his actions have only weakened her claim to the throne.
As for the son Rhaenyra actually wanted dead, we hear Aemond Targaryen say that he "welcomes" a one-on-one fight with his uncle Daemon (something tells us he should be careful what he wishes for).

The second season of “House of the Dragon” began filming in April of 2023 and premiered on June 16, 2024. The award-winning TV series is based on George R.R. Martin‘s novel “Fire & Blood” and is set approximately 200 years before the events of parent series “Game of Thrones.” While the first season told the story of House Targaryen over the span of several decades and thus incorporated several time jumps, the second season will reportedly take place fully in one time period (which means no more confusing cast changes).
Returning series regulars from Season 1 include Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney and Sonoya Mizuno. Also back are recurring cast members Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall and Matthew Needham. Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for Episode 1 of Season 2 of House of the Dragon.
A long-awaited return to Westeros in the time of Daenerys Targaryen’s ancestors took place in Season 2 of the Game of Thrones spinoff show House of the Dragon, which launched Sunday night on HBO and Max. The first episode of the second season took no time in plunging viewers back into the violence and backstabbing that prove key to the series.
In the background of the bloody fight for The Iron Throne, a key plot point — The Blood and Cheese murder — from George R. R. Martin’s book — saw some changes at the end of Episode 1, titled “A Son For A Son.”
As viewers will recall, Season 1 ended with the tragic death of Rhaenyra’s (Emma D’Arcy) son Lucerys or “Luke” (Elliot Grihault) at the hands of Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) and his dragon Vhagar.

“House of the Dragon” is back and back with a vengeance in Season 2. After nearly two years away, the “Game of Thrones” prequel returned with one of the most hyped – and dreaded – moments from the book rounding out the episode. The big Blood and Cheese confrontation had been top of mind for many fans since the show debuted and the results were as tough to watch as expected.
But that was far from the only thing that shocked viewers in the impactful premiere. Rhaenyra (Emm D’Arcy) still hasn’t come to terms with Luke’s death, Daemon (Matt Smith) is on the warpath, and House Stark is entering the picture in a bigger way.

"I want Aemond Targaryen."
Consumed by grief after the death of her son Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault) in the season 1 finale, Rhaenyra Targaryen's (Emma D'Arcy) only line in the season 2 premiere of House of the Dragon is an admission of a desire for vengeance, which her husband and uncle, Prince Daemon (Matt Smith), is more than happy to deliver.
While most of the episode is spent in King's Landing with Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) attempting to keep her own family under control, the last ten minutes focus on two characters who should be very familiar to fans of George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood.
Daemon enlists a member of the Gold Cloaks with a disdain for the Hightowers ("Blood") and a rat-catcher with gambling debts who knows his way around the Red Keep ("Cheese") to kill Aemond. When Cheese asks what they should do if they can't find the one-eyed warrior,...

House of the Dragon is finally back, and the comparisons to Game of Thrones have begun. Fans are eager to see how closely the show follows George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood and what changes have been made to the source material.
This episode has a more even pacing, allowing characters more time to develop, unlike season 1, which had many time jumps and explosive moments in every episode. As a result, there are fewer breathtaking, shocking, or awe-inspiring scenes.
However, if you pay close attention, many moments are more important than they appear, hinting at future events. There’s also a major moment towards the end that has already divided fans. Here are some of the biggest highlights from the episode.

Halt! This article contains major spoilers for the premiere of "House of the Dragon" season 2.
"Blood for Blood" and "Fire to Fire." So go the dueling taglines of "House of the Dragon" season 2, pitting Team Green vs Team Black in the story's main power struggle for control of the Iron Throne. But what makes this particular conflict different from the one we all saw unfold throughout the original "Game of Thrones" is that dissent, chaos, and infighting have finally come for House Targaryen and their vaunted, centuries-long dynasty over the Seven Kingdoms — and the rest of the realm, innocent and guilty alike, are now paying the price.
If the bloody business in Westeros has taught us anything over the years, it's that war makes no distinction between commoners and highborn. When seedy characters are motivated enough, whether by fear or hatred or simple greed, the results can be as horrifying as they are inevitable.
"Blood for Blood" and "Fire to Fire." So go the dueling taglines of "House of the Dragon" season 2, pitting Team Green vs Team Black in the story's main power struggle for control of the Iron Throne. Westerosi history is littered with events so monumental that they often receive their own nicknames. In George R.R. Martin‘s A Song of Ice and Fire canon, King Aegon I Targaryen’s years-long campaign to unite the Seven Kingdoms under one rule is known simply as “Aegon’s Conquest.” Even further back in the lore, the cataclysmic event in which darkness fell over the known world is called only “the Long Night.”
Game of Thrones watchers understand the importance of good historical branding as well as anyone. They know the “Red Wedding” wasn’t a nuptial ceremony that just happened to be adorned in red hues—it was massacre at The Twins that damn near wiped out House Stark and the armies of the North. This House of the Dragon review contains spoilers.
Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) says precisely four words in the House of the Dragon season 2 premiere.
Rhaenyra doesn’t speak when she unsaddles from her dragon on a beach in the Stormlands to find the ashen remains of her second son, Lucerys (Elliot Grihault), killed by Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) in the season 1 finale. She doesn’t speak when her eldest son Jacaerys (Harry Collett) appears in her chambers, attempting to deliver the good news about winning fresh allies to their cause, but instead weeping with her about what they both just lost.
The first and only time Rhaenyra speaks in the installment’s 64-minute runtime is upon her arrival back to Dragonstone after finding Luke’s body. As her advisors and allies plead for further instructions on the coming war – like establishing a stronghold in The Riverlands and maintaining the...

Midway through the House of the Dragon season 2 premiere, King Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) makes his way to the Iron Throne to do his kingly duties. As he approaches the baroque chair made of swords, his herald announces the king’s presence to the gathered smallfolk in grand fashion.
“All hail King Aegon! Aegon the Magnanimous! Second of his name! King of the Andals, and the Rhoynar, and the First Men! Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm!”
Ignoring the rest of the usual “King of the…” jargon, Aegon hones in on one portion of the sobriquet in particular. “The magnanimous?” he says to the herald with an eyebrow raised.
It’s clear that something about the word “magnanimous” has struck Aegon. Later on in the episode, as the assassins know as Blood and Cheese prowl through the castle,...

House of the Dragon is a prequel spinoff of the epic fantasy series, Game of Thrones. It is set almost 200 years before the original show’s events, meaning entirely new characters. With many supporting characters present throughout the show, one of the more sinister ones is Blood and Cheese.

Olivia Cooke plays Alicent Hightower in the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, and the Season 2 of the show is almost here. The relationship between Alicent Hightower and Ser Criston Cole, knight of the Kingsguard, has been an interesting and complex one in the series, and we know we’re likely seeing a bedroom scene between the two in Season 2. However, there appears to be another one that has been cut from the show. In a recent interview with Elle, Olivia Cooke discussed this deleted scene, and more.

Actress Olivia Cooke will be returning to her role as Queen Alicia Hightower in the second season of House of the Dragons. The Game of Thrones spinoff sees her play the role of King Viserys I Targaryen’s wife and the mother of Aegon II and Aemond. She is constantly at loggerheads with Emma D’Arcy’s Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen.
While Cooke has played many roles in films such as Ready Player One and Sound of Metal, her role in House of the Dragon reportedly gave her a unique experience. Despite being only 30, the actress plays the role of a grandmother in the HBO show. The actress opened up about the weird realization of playing a mother to an actor who was only two years younger than her.

In Game of Thrones, there were a number of noteworthy antagonists. Whether it was the ruthless Night King, the savage Ramsey Bolton, or the pure evil Cersei Lannister, we could not help but detest them all. But one character in particular made us genuinely hate him. Jack Gleeson played Joffrey Baratheon, one of the most notorious characters on the show. Even Tom Glynn-Carney hates Aegon II’s comparisons with him.
Tom Glynn-Carney didn’t want comparisons with Joffrey
As of now, Tom Glynn-Carney’s Aegon II is perhaps one of the most despicable characters in House of the Dragon. In a recent interview with Vulture, he admitted he wanted to portray Aegon in a different light than Joffrey. He said:

One of the gray figures in the prequel to Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, is Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. One of Rhaenyra’s many redeeming qualities, as portrayed by Emma D’Arcy, is her love and concern for her children. That’s one of the reasons the Season 1 conclusion of House of the Dragon was so heartbreaking. Even Ewan Mitchell, who plays Aemond, knows that Rhaenyra raised her kids right.
Ewan Mitchell would want Rhaenyra as his mom
Ever since House of the Dragon began production, fans have been comparing Alicent and Rhaenyra on several different parameters. One of the hotly debated ones is their abilities as a mother. When asked who would they prefer as their mom in real life in an interview with Igv, Mitchell replied:
“I don’t think Alicent did a very good job. I will put my arms up and say… I’d say Rhaenyra.

House of the Dragon is back after a lengthy hiatus, and Season 2 is another decent effort for the Game of Thrones prequel. The sophomore run has many good aspects, but the execution could be much better.
Instead of diving straight into the action and intrigue, the series continues setting up the conflicts to come, which is surprising considering House of the Dragon Season 1 presented a tipping point for both the Blacks and the Greens.
As a result, the first three episodes are considerably more subdued than expected, with the series focusing more on peeling back the layers on the characters to establish their wants and needs in this great big game of chess.
While it’s necessary to get to the root of the characters, a bit too much exposition negatively impacts the pace, making some plot points feel undeserved when they happen.
The good news is that the acting remains top-tier,...

It’s been two years since Season 1 of “House of the Dragon” debuted, which is a long time to spend away from House Targaryen, its divided allies and enemies, and a whole buncha dragons. Who do we like, who do we hate, who’s married to their brother or uncle or just a casual cousin once removed?
Season 1 of “House of the Dragon” began during the reign of King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine), chronicling the last decade and change of his life before he died of an unidentified wasting disease. After his first wife and son died, Viserys named his daughter Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) as the rightful heir, overturning a council ruling that actually put Viserys on the throne in the first place and rattling minds across the realm. Upon his death, Viserys’ second wife Alicent (Olivia Cooke) claimed that he named their son Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) as King,...

Plot: Westeros is on the brink of a bloody civil war with the Green and Black Councils fighting for King Aegon and Queen Rhaenyra, respectively.
Review: It was always going to be an uphill climb for House of the Dragon to live up to the peak of Game of Thrones. With an uneven first season but still better than the ending of the series that inspired it, House of the Dragon concluded its first season with the beginning of a civil war between Targaryens vying for the Iron Throne. Despite solid performances from Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, and Olivia Cooke, House of the Dragon‘s sprawling time jumps and reliance on dragons rather than intriguing characters worth investing in made it hard to care about what happened until the war began. Even though it is two episodes shorter than the previous season, House of the Dragon begins with...

At the heart of House of the Dragon‘s second season is an unresolvable tension, and I don’t mean the one between the Greens and the Blacks.
On one hand, both Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), the daughter that Viserys I (Paddy Considine) chose to succeed him on the Iron Throne, and Alicent (Olivia Cooke), mother of the son (Tom Glynn-Carney’s Aegon II) who actually did, want desperately to avoid all-out war, or at least to minimize the destruction when it comes. It’s an eminently reasonable and humane stance, held by two of the show’s more reasonable and humane main characters. Of course we want what they want.
On the other hand … what, we’re going to tune into a show about a succession crisis involving dragons and not root to see them burn each other to a crisp?
This contradiction is not new or unique to House of the Dragon...

The first season of “House of the Dragon,” HBO’s prequel to “Game of Thrones” and the first spinoff in network history, was widely considered a success. But it was also, in essence, 10 hours of set-up, speeding through decades of context to take audiences to the brink of the Westerosi civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. Despite its many strengths, the show began as a structural oxymoron: too rushed to do the patient plotting and character-building that gave its parent show such a strong foundation; too slow to sink its teeth into the real meat of its story until the final stretch of episodes, which saw the death of King Viserys (Paddy Considine) and the formation of factions around his two potential heirs.

This post contains spoilers for "House of the Dragon" season 1.
The terrifying shadow of war looms large over the Targaryens in HBO's "House of the Dragon," and if things weren't already dire, they're about to get much worse. The show's season 1 finale ended on a rather grim note. After both Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and Lucerys (Elliot Grihault) approach the Baratheons for an alliance and the latter is denied support, a tense chase ensues on dragonback where Aemond and Vhagar hound Lucerys and Arrax. Although Aemond simply intended this chase to be an intimidation tactic, his dragon defies him and devours Lucerys and Arrax, leaving a devastated Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) enraged and ready for war. Up until that point, the ever-evolving familial in-fighting and political scheming had already created a schism within House Targaryen, but this final, unintended tragedy propels everyone involved into a dark, violent period that is bound to...

After the less-than-stellar series finale of "Game of Thrones," many were skeptical of HBO's decision to pursue the prequel series "House of the Dragon," and firmly believed the show would be an expensive flop. Fortunately, not only is "House of the Dragon" rivetingly good television but it's also proven to be a massive hit for the premium cable network and its streaming platform, Max. Centered on the events of the Targaryen Civil War, colloquially known as the Dance of the Dragons, the first season showcased the events leading up to the passing of King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) and the kingdom's refusal to accept his chosen successor, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy), as the rightful heir.

HBO has renewed “House of the Dragon” for a third season, even before the second season’s premiere on June 17. This “Game of Thrones” spinoff series, co-created by Ryan Condal and George R.R. Martin, has been a major success for the network.
It recorded the largest premiere audience ever for an original series on HBO and HBO Max, averaging 29 million viewers per episode across both linear and streaming platforms. The show was quickly renewed for a second season just a week after its debut.
“House of the Dragon” is based on Martin’s book “Fire & Blood” and chronicles the history of the Targaryen dynasty in Westeros, set nearly 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and about 100 years after the Targaryens unified the Seven Kingdoms.
The returning cast for Season 2 includes Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno and others.

The history of Westeros will continue to be told. HBO has renewed House of the Dragon for Season 3 days before its second season premieres on Sunday, June 16. Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen. War has broken out between the two sides of the family after Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) usurped the Iron Throne in favor of her son, Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) at the end of Season 1 and robbing Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) of her inheritance. This was followed by the death of Rhaenyra’s young son Lucerys (Elliot Grihault) at the hand of Aemond’s (Ewan Mitchell) dragon Vhagar. Send the ravens! Not only is civil war embroiling the entire continent of Westeros as a bunch of weird, blonde-haired, incest-loving white people fight over control of a big seat with a bunch of swords melted on it, but the epic story is now set to continue for the foreseeable future. Mere days before season 2 of "House of the Dragon" is scheduled to premiere later this week, HBO announced that it has officially renewed the hit "Game of Thrones" spin-off/prequel series for a third season (presumably) full of even more fire and blood.
The show is based on author George R.R. Martin's fictional historical retelling of the greatest threat to ever overwhelm the Targaryen dynasty, titled "Fire & Blood," and there's certainly plenty of material to sustain at least another season. Things get a little trickier after that, however, should the network be inclined to keep the violent, good times rolling.

Demonstrating the formidable strength of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” empire, the network has renewed “House of the Dragon” for Season 3, in advance of its Season 2 premiere on June 16.
The “Game of Thrones” spinoff series — co-created by Ryan Condal and “Thrones” author George R.R. Martin — has proven to be a fire-breathing hit for the network. The show enjoyed the biggest premiere audience ever for an original series for both HBO and HBO Max (now Max), and the first season averaged 29 million viewers an episode over linear and streaming. It was renewed for Season 2 just one week following its series premiere.
Based on author Martin’s “Game of Thrones” book “Fire & Blood,” “House of the Dragon” follows the Targaryen dynasty in the fictional continent of Westeros. It takes place nearly 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and about 100 years after the Targaryens united the Seven Kingdoms.

Ahead of Sunday’s Season 2 premiere, HBO has confirmed it has renewed House of the Dragon for a third season.
The news is not a surprise. House of the Dragon creator George R.R. Martin teased in December 2023 that he was already working with the writing team on Seasons 3 and 4 of the fantasy drama.
Based on Martin’s Fire & Blood and set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon tells the story of House Targaryen.
“George, Ryan, and the rest of our incredible executive producers, cast, and crew, have reached new heights with the phenomenal second season of House of the Dragon,” said Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films. “We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season two, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart.
